The Labour Party are bloody hypocrites

I think Angela rayner has got a nerve to start slashing the right to buy when she has profited from it, is she going to give the money back then that she pocketed from this scheme when she sold her house? I have always been a labour supporter and I am as working class as they come but I am so angry about this. I am not denying that the right to buy policy has its issues but it's just tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis and ignoring the real issues. I may be slightly emotional about this as I live in a one bedroomed council flat that I was planning on buying next year, my only hope of probably ever owning a property. Instead, if and when I choose to have children and I am overcrowded, they will now have to rehouse me themselves instead to a bigger property and I will now probably be a lifelong council tenant. Fabulous. Why are they targeting the people at the bottom? I can't support them anymore sadly.

RTB either needs to mean houses are sold for their actual value or stopped altogether. It makes no sense whatsoever to sell them to tenants at a discount.

ShowmetheBotox · 26/10/2024 18:45

Hard agree. They are more disgusting than the Tories because they promised they would be different but are actually way worse.

They are acting like they are drunk on power. We’re actually fucked

itsgettingweird · 26/10/2024 18:45

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:27

Well yes because I would have eventually sold the flat and moved up the ladder Confused

Do what everyone else does then.

Use your saving to buy a smaller property you can sell later.

You don't have to stay in a council flat whilst you can afford to save to buy.

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:48

My savings and earnings wouldn't allow buy anything.

If I am now a council tenant for the rest of my life it's not freeing up a property is it ?

But when you die then the house is free again

If you buy and leave it to someone then that's one less council house

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 26/10/2024 18:50

I think it's ridiculous generally to say that no politician can ever change a policy that they may have benefitted from in the past without being hypocritical.

Catza · 26/10/2024 18:50

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:40

So it's not going to make an impact on housing stock for the next 50 years until I die, we need more house building right now.

And for the last 40 years council houses have been sold to tenants like yourself and, I imagine, a lot of them would become vacant right about now if they remained council properties.
I still do not understand why you feel hard done by. I lived in houseshares until the age of 36 with my two degrees because I couldn't afford to rent by myself. You have a tenancy for life and don't even need to buy a house, technically.

HappyTwo · 26/10/2024 18:52

I think the world has changed - it used to be affordable for people to buy houses but it’s not anymore. There are many cultures where the population accepts they are going to be renters all their life.

I think you’ll find some people who privately rent would think you are lucky having access to council housing.

mumda · 26/10/2024 18:53

Never buy a flat. They should be the responsibility of a social landlord fully.

Private owners get absolutely screwed over buying in a council block.

Right to buy would work if they built more houses but they do not.
My concern currently is they're building over good farmland in their quest for more houses. This is beyond insanity.

yeaitsmeagain · 26/10/2024 18:55

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:48

My savings and earnings wouldn't allow buy anything.

Then use the motivation to earn and save more, like lots of us have. I lived in a houseshare to save up enough, I wasn't expected to be handed it on a plate.

If you have a degree why are you settling for being underpaid? Health issues?

I run a business and our 25 year old staff with no degrees are buying houses.

sparemeatyre · 26/10/2024 18:59

Ironic that Labour still considered to be the party for the working class. It’s a myth. It’s a joke.
They have no idea what to do for economy which when robust works for everyone. They seem mostly good at promoting hate of education, aspiration and investment - which are for everyone. Saving for future is what everyone tries to do
and bricks & mortar homes, garages. Rooms are choice investments when those who don’t understand “financial markets & salespeople”.

Labour voters, open your eyes. L-party are just pretending to care about working people. They only want to be woke, and “glamorous” famous wearing rich people clothes. VIP tickets.
like worst ever “influencers” …. Just love to be talking to a camera saying nothing worth listening to…. Doing nothing for working people.

Labour loves criminals letting them out of jail, people arriving & housing them but they can’t work … love people who cost society money but don’t contribute.

The scales have fallen from my eyes.

Well, I earn 30k a year and the average house price in my area is 260k so unless I find a partner soon who I can buy with I'm stumped.

This. Right to buy is a farce and a joke to everyone who’s stuck in private rental while trying desperately to save for a home. I’m all for social housing and we need more of it- exactly why it’s right that RTB should end.
Labour are making some v difficult and unpopular decisions but I agree with scrapping RTB and making winter fuel allowance means tested so I’m not too fed up so far.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/10/2024 19:10

The Labour Party has always been hypocritical. Don’t know why anybody is surprised tbh.

YABVVU to be so selfish and greedy. You're already so lucky to get a one bed council flat as a single woman. Secure tenancy, safe from the vagaries of the rental market and a 30K salary with no children. What exactly is stopping you from saving up and buying? Or even taking on a second job?

You do realise 30K is the average salary in the country. Rent is crippling especially in places like London but that's less of a problem for you.

Also you don't even have a boyfriend but you're thinking about children. Maybe work on securing your financial future first?

So many other people are stuck in house shares while you're happily ensconced in your one bed. Or at risk of being kicked out when LL's sell up, struggling to find another property with a similarly low rent. Yet that's not enough for you.

I don't really like Labour. But I do agree with some of the 'unpopular' but much needed decisions they're making.

Can you use your lifetime ISA for your retirement instead?

Put down the daily Mail and go to bed

I couldn't afford to rent privately in my area. I would have to move back in with my mum.

Be grateful for what you've got then.
And that's coming from a council tenant.

it is when you eventually die and the housing stock is passed on... or if you move

Nevermind91 · 26/10/2024 19:21

To be fair to Labour, they aren't doing anything they haven't done before.
Stage 1: Hit those who have saved.
Stage 2: Hit business.
Stage 3: Sell off any national assets that people won't miss.
Stage 4: Run out of cash and lose election.
Stage 5: Complain like mad when the next administration makes cuts to services.

How is removing the WFA and RTB related to any of those?

Also what do you suggest they do instead? Where is this magic money tree?

I could afford to buy the flat at the 50% discount they were offering, not at market value.

Well, we would all like to buy a property at 50% of its market value and after having cheap rent.

why should some be allowed to & the rest of us not??
