The Labour Party are bloody hypocrites

I think Angela rayner has got a nerve to start slashing the right to buy when she has profited from it, is she going to give the money back then that she pocketed from this scheme when she sold her house? I have always been a labour supporter and I am as working class as they come but I am so angry about this. I am not denying that the right to buy policy has its issues but it's just tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis and ignoring the real issues. I may be slightly emotional about this as I live in a one bedroomed council flat that I was planning on buying next year, my only hope of probably ever owning a property. Instead, if and when I choose to have children and I am overcrowded, they will now have to rehouse me themselves instead to a bigger property and I will now probably be a lifelong council tenant. Fabulous. Why are they targeting the people at the bottom? I can't support them anymore sadly.

Virtually every politician I remember has been a liar and a hypocrite. Nothing new.🙄

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 28/10/2024 18:21

Seriously?

Do you even know how lucky you are to be in social housing and you're complaining about potentially being in one lifelong?!

I'm sat waiting for a council house for me and my children, we were made homeless last year and still couldn't manage to get one in those desperate circumstances, and you're complaining that you can't easily take another council property off the market?

Jesus Christ, I can't actually say what I want to on here, but know I am so enraged with how bloody entitled you are being.
You have no idea how lucky you are!!

I don't agree with the right to buy either. It's social housing that should be there for those who need it.

Fwiw, I managed to buy a place without any other financial support. I was 45 years old and had saved for 7 years. I will not be 'moving up the ladder'. I have a very small place albeit in a lovely area and consider myself very lucky. Brought up 2 DDs here too.

Just saw the expose on the Labour slum children's home landlord who also funnelled millions of pounds to his friend who was in charge of the homes. One party doesn't pretend to be decent, the other does, but acts the same :(

I’d like to read about that, what’s their name?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/10/2024 18:59

Here you go, @Blossomtoes ... I'm not too sure about the source, but at least it seems reasonably well researched and the others are even worse:

Thank you. It’s really unsavoury if even half of it’s correct.

It’s not the price that’s the issue, up to now councils are constrained by legislation preventing them from replacing them.

Even without the legislation, is the price after a 50% discount enough to build a good quality replacement (council houses from the 1930s used to be known for being solidly built as the First World War brought the poor conditions many of the soldiers lived in to light)?

Well the income is certainly enough to build some. The profit margin on a property built for the commercial market is 20% so it would seem that four new homes could be built for every five sold, even taking that into account.

MandEmummy · 17/11/2024 19:41

Original poster, I totally agree with you, it's devastating. Put your application in tomorrow or the day after and you'd still be entitled to the current discount before the change. You'll be surprised about mortgage rates and how much you can borrow etc. If you earn £30k you could borrow up to around 100/120k. Speak to a broker and see your options. Please don't miss out just because you THINK you couldn't manage it. At least try, no harm in trying. Average amount of time to complete was 5/6 months before the budget change, now it will be at least double that, so you've got time.

Like many other people, why not you?

how does a single woman, with no children, on £30,000 even qualify for council housing? Families are being (if they're 'lucky' ) housed in shared housing.

let alone RTB ay 50%???

She was on the lait for 6/7 years before she got offered a 1 bedroom flat? 100's of families would have been housed well before it was her turn.

Plus she literally said she was a student with part time hours when she was given her flat.

Either people don't understand how council housing works or are just jealous.

Why are you reviving an old thread the OP hadn't been back to?

plus, not being psychic & all I hadn't read posts she had not yet written. But on that point, she was incredibly lucky to get a council maisonette, just because she didn't want to live with her parents & now she's pissed off that she can't buy it at a ridiculous price? Entitled much?!

why in Gods name would I be jealous??

the OP was either goading or incredibly entitled, given she hadn't been back we'll never know which.
