I figured I'd find a thread on here.
While I can understand people's initial outrage (let's look at the title, but not do any further research), the piece itself actually spends it's entire running time mocking Karen Matthews and her barmy scheme to attempt to make £50,000. Shannon is referenced, but is not portrayed. And she is certainly not mocked.
While, certain aspects may have been slightly exaggerated for effect, the movie is based on hard facts:
Karen Matthews DID these things.
Craig Meehan WAS convicted of having child porn on his laptop.
Shannon WAS kept at Michael Donovan's place.
Probably best to just take it all with a pinch of salt if it's not your thing. Musical mockery is nothing new. From Weird Al Yankovic to the Barron Knights.
Yes, Shannon is a real person and she did nothing wrong. But there are numerous documentaries and portrayals of so many innocent people, and not all are flattering. Some are downright evil, but some have a sense of humour.
At the end of the day, there are probably more important things to be concerned with out there.

This is possibly one of the most patronising and un self aware posts I've ever read on Mumsnet, and I've been off and on here for 20 years.

Interesting post....
Not libelous as it is factual, just told with humour.
Shannon was a child in 2008! It's now 16 years later, she's in her mid 20's. That's how age works.

I didn’t say it was libellous. I used libel as an example of how freedom of expression doesn’t include illegality. Adult or not, she’s a high profile victim of crime and very likely has other vulnerabilities. There are probably grounds for an injunction due to those factors alone.

CocoapuffPuff · 25/10/2024 13:12

Goodness, could you possibly be more patronising?

"Pat on the head, there there, nothing to worry your pretty little heads about, over-reacting again dearies? Here I am with my sensible explanation that'll help your little lady brains understand the COMPLEX issues here......don't worry about it, it's aaaaaall fine."

Never mentioned "lady brains". Despite the name Mumsnet, I assume that there is a cross section on here. So, for the record, I was in no way being sexist and was not intending to patronise. Surely, attempting to paraphrase me is more patronising?
Just saying, it's based on facts and 90% of people on here will be voicing an opinion on something they haven't seen. But that's the way of the internet these days. This morning's feature on Loose Women sums it up perfectly, each one had an opinion, and each one pointed out they hadn't seen it.
Take a gamble, watch it, if you hate it afterwards then fine. You never know, you might even smile at some of the jokes šŸ˜€

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:21

Is it funny because they are common?

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:22

Lol, why on earth would I watch it šŸ˜‚

Your contempt and enjoyment of someone else's trauma is breathtaking.

I fully take your points.
Pretty sure the movie backer's legal team would have looked into all this tho?
Any true crime drama, humourous or not, would be subject to the same scrutiny? I could be wrong.

Well.... It would literally be the only way you could give a valid informed opinion.

You'd think, but Netflix are in all sorts of trouble over Baby Reindeer, so who can tell.

I don't need to give a "valid and informed opinion". Why would I? I don't watch half the stuff at the cinema or on tv. I read the reviews and decide if I want to watch. I'm sure I'm far to old a demographic for this anyway, probably when I was a twat at Oxbridge I would have thought it was meta or something šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Quite clearly missing the point.
I show neither contempt or enjoyment over someone else's trauma.
Sometimes a joke is just funny regardless of the subject matter. The joke (and premise of the movie) here is the fact her Mother hid her to try and scam £50k.
The joke is not the trauma. It's the messed up family.

BarryGw · 25/10/2024 13:31

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:21

Is it funny because they are common?

No, it's funny because it was a ridiculous scheme that was never, ever going to work. Stupidity is sometimes amusing.

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:32

Trouble is Barrygw, if you have to explain a joke it usually means it's not funny. You can bang on all you like about how we just don't get it and need to watch it, but it just makes me less likely to.

CocoapuffPuff · 25/10/2024 13:33

You're quite disturbing, you know that?
How have you managed to bypass your compassion for the real living, now adult, victim of this? Is it something you just don't feel, or do you keep it back, save it for something that is closer to home?

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:36

"The messed up family" are also not funny. It was a bloody sad situation all round. It's breathtakingly arrogant to assume that of course we'd all find it funny if we watched this show. Are you 15?

Didn't say you didn't get it. Just said if you've not seen you don't actually know what the joke is. If you saw it, you might still hate it.

As I said in my other reply, not assuming you'd like it. You prob wouldn't. But at least you'd be informed.

ByMerryKoala · 25/10/2024 13:44

You watch it if you like @BarryGw and laugh your tits off about how funny it is that these bastards abused a child in an incompetent manner and left her traumatised.

That's fair point. I do have compassion but also a very dark humour (coping mechanism). I am the first to make jokes about my dead parents, despite the fact I miss them every day. Horses for courses.

Informed about what?

Thommasina · 25/10/2024 13:47

I guess there's some sort of spoiler and it's not as straightforward as it seems.

Whoop de fucking ping.

Would you be happier if the abuse was more competent? Is it the methodology you have an issue with?

Just kidding! It's just healthy debate.

Actually the imdb reviews are making me laugh because they are so obviously written by you barry.

ByMerryKoala · 25/10/2024 13:51

Are you having a moment. You said that this show wouldn't be funny because the Matthews were a common family but because it was a ridiculous scheme.
