I was at Edinburgh this year. Some festival goers would watch a labrador taking a crap if someone told them it was edgy.

This is so true 🤣🤣

ByMerryKoala · 25/10/2024 08:05

It's so incredibly tasteless. I expect the shock tactics operated as a substitute for talent. Like that shitty Myra Hindley painting done with the cast of children's hands. Exploitative lazy cunts.

PucaBandearg · 25/10/2024 08:07

There's so much wrong here, and it's not just the despicable musical.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 25/10/2024 08:07

As soon as you use the term ā€˜Karen’ you show your true colours and opinion of women. I’ve got a very dark sense of humour but this is a step to far.

Sethera · 25/10/2024 08:07

Great idea, it could spawn a whole run of musicals based on distressing true crime - perhaps 'The Moors Murderers - the Musical' or 'Fred and Rose in Song and Dance' or 'Shipman's Story'. šŸ™„

This is also my experience of the festival. Some absolute diamonds, some stinking turds. Obvious which this is.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 25/10/2024 07:38

There have been musicals about worse
French Revolution, er.. sweeny Todd

and ofc the movie of Cats 😩😩

Oh please, you cannot compare the French Revolution or an invented person to a musical about a child abused (for monetary gain) by her family. What in your world makes you think that this is either comparable or acceptable?

Well, don’t be too snobby about it because it’s sold out at four week run at the Edinburgh festival

Well, that says more about those who bought the tickets, doesn't it.
Again, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Some things are just too reprehensible, as are those who agree with them

Disgusting, the poor girl is trying to live her life and there is a musical about her story of abuse as a child?! I can't possibly fathom why anyone would find that remotely funny!

Yes that's the difference between this story and things like Sweeney Todd and Springtime for Hitler.

Sweeeney Todd was a Victorian fictional character who never existed in the first place. Hitler is dead. Shannon Matthews is a real person who is now in her 20s, she has siblings and friends and relatives who are all still alive.

It's in shockingly poor taste the use of "mumsnet Karens" is all you need to know about the mentality of the producer. The Edinburgh Fringe - not the Festival - has got so big over the last decade that people putting on shows need a new angle to get the press coverage and have any hope of sellling tickets. This guy is obviously going for the shock/poor taste angle.

Restaurantcritic · 25/10/2024 08:12

Christ. Can the absolute bellends who thought this up put themselves in the shoes of Shannon for one bloody second. What a horrible idea.

Looks down at Labrador thinking he could become an internet sensation… . Maybe not.

Fifiesta · 25/10/2024 08:13

Some people lose their moral compass, some never had one.
Happy to be called a Karen, if it’s by someone with zero judgement.

FriendlyFriend · 25/10/2024 08:15

Wow 😮 This is really poor taste. How is this allowed? Poor Shannon for seeing this where people are ridiculing her childhood trauma.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 25/10/2024 08:16

The same people who would find this funny would need years of therapy after being misgendered

That is true. I listened to an episode of ā€œthe rest is entertainmentā€ and Richard Osman was talking about how new comics could get discovered at The Fringe but now it’s really difficult due to social media - comics are making their talent there.

KnottedTwine · 25/10/2024 08:23

A quick Google says 1373 shows at the Fringe this year - the Festival is the "official" bit of the programme and has traditionally been opera, classical music and theatre.

Anyone who has been in Edinburgh in August will know what a rammy it is in the Royal Mile with people thrusting leaflets at you and shouting about their shows and competing for audiences. There are some really good things on at the Fringe and also a load of absolute dross. Performers need to cover their not inconsiderable costs.

Sethera · 25/10/2024 08:32

What the creators of this lack the self-awareness to see, is that it's actually just another case of pretentious 'artsy' types sneering at the lowly working/benefits class.

A deprived community within Dewsbury came together over the search for Shannon Matthews and were cheated in the most despicable way; Shannon herself was thrust into a horrifying nightmare, but they were all Northerners on benefits, so it's just a larf, innit?

Fizbosshoes · 25/10/2024 08:32

Agree making entertainment and profiting from a young girls abuse is unfunny, crass and insensitive.

This!! So disgusting. I’m pretty relaxed about most things but for fucks sake, that was a kid’s miserable real-life.

Absolutely right. A load of middle class Trustafarian twats laughing at poor people with accents because it's so 'edgy'.
