To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

chriscillizza.substack.com/p/why-do-people-vote-for-donald-trump

This article contains two emails from people about why people vote for Trump. It's very enlightening!

Dismissing all his supporters as racist, sexist idiots is very dangerous.

Dyerun · 21/10/2024 16:43

Everyone high up in politics is corrupt and shady, if you think otherwise you are deluded.

At least Trump is open about his twatishness rather than putting on a public face.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/10/2024 16:44

I was on the bus the first time I heard the news he was president, I missed my stop because I was agog at the news. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins again unfortunately, after 2020 I feel like the far right has gained so much more traction than it would have otherwise.

MrsSchrute · 21/10/2024 16:44

One of the emails gives the following reasons why people vote for Trump:

'1. The Democratic party promotes an intentional agenda of undoing a traditional (perhaps even a “Judeo-Christian”) understanding of humanity and morality. They see the pictures from the recent VMA awards and say, “Trump may be terrible as a person, but he isn’t trying to recreate culture and turn it into this.” I can live with his own personal moral failings. What I don’t want to live with is my school district installing kitty litter in the bathrooms to accommodate those who identify as furries. While the litter claim may not be true, the fact that it is even a discussion point is evidence of a world that’s gone mad.

  1. Abortion. Trump may be a terrible person, but abortion is the intentional ending of a human life. In his first term, he appointed three justices that undid Roe v Wade. In his second, he will not actively support the end of abortion. But he is unlikely to support the advance of abortion.
  1. His instincts on economic policies are better than her formulated beliefs. Tariffs aren’t great, but they are better than taxing unrealized capital gains.
  1. There will be people around him to stop the worst impulses he displays. He is not smart. He is not capable. He is not qualified. But the choice is binary. I can vote for incompetence, which can be balanced by the people in office around him frustrating his worst impulses and overcoming his incapacity to do the job. Or choose someone who may be capable, but will pursue both cultural and economic principles that are not just self-servingly contrary to my preference, but are actually bad for the nation in which we live. He may say and do things that are embarrassing. But he isn't pursuing an agenda that cuts against the very nature of what it means to be a flourishing human being.

As opposed to a woman who got her initial position ( by her own admission) by sexual favours to her boss. Who has never been elected to any office ( withdrew from her primary when it was obvious that she was going to get the smallest share of the vote). Who didn’t visit the border when she was supposed to be in charge of it?

we won’t mention the earpiece, though.

Can you please link to where Kamala (by her own admission) said this? Or is this just misogynist BS.

I think you will find that she has been elected as VP & state senator.

I so hope she wins.

Even if all of that were true - spoiler alert, none of it is - then yes, she would still be preferable to Trump.

Finding it mind boggling that anyone thinks you are being unreasonable!

I was all set to come in and say “oh well of course everyone hopes that” - but I’m clearly living in some sort of bubble!

It’s pathetic that people don’t even put in the effort to twist the truth or misrepresent facts nowadays. They just flat out lie. It’s so lazy.

Yes!

And if she did have to sleep with someone to get her first job, I’d be judging the hiring boss, not her!

Abortion. Having seen what some women have been put through not being allowed a D&C after carrying a dead baby around in them, I cannot agree on his stance.

There will be people around him to stop the worst impulses he displays
All those people are gone and say he should not be the next POTUS. His administration will be packed with people who think like him and Vance.

This is just garbage. The people around Trump are his worst impulses and are around him purely because they do not stand up to him or stop him. Anyone who thinks Trumps entourage will do anything other than enable him are epically deluded.

ladymalfoy45 · 21/10/2024 16:54

When I think of Jed Bartlet and his First Lady ,and his West Wing team I just wish in real life politics could find someone like that.

Valeyard14 · 21/10/2024 16:56

It's amazing how Trump has actually been president, yet you could still throw a stone in a random direction at any zoo and hit something more qualified for the job than he is.

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:57

I was just disgusted also at his display of utter petulance when he refused to welcome Biden to the White House. Breaking a tradition.
He’s pathetic. The Obamas were so gracious and dignified to him and Melania whist doing the same. He’s so childish.

Very concerned. Sadly I think he's going to win it for reasons I.... I just can't imagine for anyone other that red-hat nutcases, who are not a majority of the Republican vote. But actually the problem may be less him being President than it ending up being Vance.

I've tried to avoid going down the 'Oh, he's losing it, he's going senile' path but actually I think there really is something wrong with him neurologically now. He's making less and less sense, swearing a lot more at rallies like he's lost inhibitions about where to use that language etc.

Notice how they've kept him in front of the MAGA crowd, who would vote for him if he spent a rally farting into a microphone for an hour, but kept him away from mainstream media interface since his 'She's giving transgender operations to illegal immigrants in prison' performance in the debate.

If he is sworn in, I don't give it very long before he has to be replaced and the most hardline (and more competent) of misogynists, homophobes, racists, antisemites and general extreme Christian Nationalists will take charge.

It's bad news for Europe as well - Putin will be emboldened, roll over Ukraine and an Eastern EU country could well be next. Including my mum's home country. Plus it will encourage a hard-right here because for some reason people won't look at America and go 'Geez, let's not be like that' partly because our own government is totally gutless in actually standing up for social justice and hoping they'll fight the far right by being a slightly less obviously evil version.

I’m sure people have their concerns they could list but one of my main ones is one that has already happened, the scrapping of the Iran deal

If anyone has reassurance on that one I’ll take it

Boomer55 · 21/10/2024 17:00

My son lives over there, and he says Harris is rated than less than useless. Many minorities intend to vote for Trump. They feel he’s the better bet.🤷‍♀️

I agree. My worry is... he will get the immunity on going to Prison, step back and Vance will take over.

I admit I don't know enough if this is possible
