To think my friendship will need to end due to Israel/Palestine?

I've been close friends with a Jewish woman for ten years. We went on lots of trips together, lived in two different countries at the same times, been there for each other through all sorts.

Anyway since she moved I see her once or twice a year, the second time usually being Christmas. She always looks me up at Christmas and I'm anticipating the same this year.

My position is that I disagree with the October 8 attacks and also what's happening in Gaza is horrific. I've been to demonstrations about this, even bumping into two other Jewish friends at these.

I've seen my friend posting online that these demos are 'Anti Israel'. All of her posts are in support of fighting anti semitism and she has never posted about Palestine, although she works for a humanitarian organisation. AIBU to think this simply ends the friendship?

<sigh>

”The Ministry of Defence (MOD) said the Shadow R1 surveillance aircraft - which also fly over Israel as well as international air space - are purely tasked with gathering information to assist Israel's operation to find its hostages.

The spy planes are not involved in gathering intelligence for any other aspect of the war against Hamas, which has resulted in the death of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

However, a spokesperson said that the UK would consider a request from international investigators to hand over any evidence the RAF spy planes have collected that might reveal evidence of war crimes.

The spokesperson said: "In line with our international obligations, we would consider any formal request from the International Criminal Court to provide information relating to investigations into war crimes."

It is understood that no such request has yet been made”

TL:DR the British have been flying over Gaza to gather info on the hostages. If they received a request for any info they had they would consider it. They are NOT saying they have evidence of war crimes rather that if they received a request to provide info/evidence they would consider the request.

It’s actually all in the article. Once again, a triumphal posting of a link the content of which is misrepresented.

Your understanding of the articles you are posting is absolutely shocking.

No one has disagreed with you that the ICC have sought war crimes FOR BOTH SIDES.

However, this article does not provide any evidence of this nor suggests that there is UK-based evidence.

Time and time again on this thread myself and others have expressed that we may not necessarily agree with netanyu’s tactics but have highlighted how antisemitism is rife and separate to the agenda of a politician. I have personally made clear that I care for the suffering of all humans.

That is the fundamental fact you seem intent to ignore / disprove / spout out lies about.

the OP was about stopping contact with a ‘friend’ who posts about antisemitism. Anyone who cannot see how utterly horrific that is is abhorrent.

YOYOK · 26/10/2024 09:37

I wouldn’t argue with someone who had multiple posts deleted, has tried to give examples of where antisemitism isn’t antisemitism and tried to play down a terrorist organisation’s intentions.

Agreed. You are right. But so utterly damn frustrating / concerning / upsetting.

Given this racist scumbag enough of my headspace, I’m out.

I can’t let this pass without comment.

Hmm let’s see, why have I been called an antisemite.

  1. I called out inflated reports of antisemitism as being conflated with criticism of Israel, or zionism
  2. I believe these inflated reports are used to manufacture consent for genocide in Palestine. This view that Jews are under threat so they need a safe place to go.
  3. I believe Israels actions are the cause of insecurity of Jews in the diaspora and in Israel
  4. I believe Jews are safer in their home country than in Israel and I believe the actions of Israel endanger Jews, including the people it calls on to serve in the IDF. Many Jews have left their home country (UK, France, US, etc) to serve in the IDF, and they were killed while committing war crimes and serving genocidal regime
  5. I believe Israel needs complete and total reform, from the genocidal apartheid regime it currently is, just as South Africa
  6. I believe individuals that support genocide should be held socially accountable for their views and advocacy

You’ll note, my antizionist stance is protected by law. I stand by all of my comments.

You're not antisemitic, you just think that reports of antisemitism are lies, Israel shouldn't have the right to exist and Jewish people are loyal to Israel. Hokey then.

Do people in the UK generally fall out with their friends over wars between foreign nations that don't involve Israel? What is it specifically about this war that gets peoples heckles up?

If someone told me they supported Putin's invasion of Ukraine or were sad Assad had been overthrown, they'd get my heckles up as well.

You think posting about antisemitism is the same as supporting Putin?

Right, but OPs friend hasn't said anything like that.

JHound · 01/01/2025 20:31

I don’t understand why this alone would end à friendship?

I am not the type of person to believe politics cannot end friendships and have cut off people in the past because I realised with were morally
opposed on somethings and I was not interested in bridging the gap. But I need more information here.

JHound · 01/01/2025 20:34

VioletW · 21/10/2024 13:38

This isn't about her being worried about anti semitism. Obviously I have no issue with that!

It's about the fact she thinks these demos are anti semitic, wrong and shouldn't exist. That's what the posts are about.

I feel the opposite.

Ok I see what you mean. Personally I don’t like being friends with stupid people and I think labelling anybody who criticises the actions of the Israeli government “anti-semitic” falls into the stupid territory. Or at least willfully malicious. I am still not sure I would cut them off just because of that but I would see them differently.

I know people who lost friendships over Tony Blair and George Bush’s decision to invade Iraq.

CruCru · 01/01/2025 20:40

I remember a poster who said that her daughter’s friend was getting at her for not posting anything about Black Lives Matter (quite a few years ago). It’s weird that anyone has time and energy to notice what others don’t post on social media.

I don't think a Jewish person feeling concerned about antisemitism at protests maked them stupid.

Yes. Also, I know people who struggle with those who form their opinions solely based on what the media says without looking into the issues independently.

And some who struggle with unquestioning support of those in the west who seek to regime change, without questioning the veracity of the reasons, the moral standing to do so, the devastating consequences for normal people, or whether to do so could be seen as xenophobic or a colonial throwback.
