What tat are you trying not to buy??

Following on from last weeks ‘what’s pissed you off today’ thread, today I’m asking ‘What tat are you trying not to buy?’

I keep seeing paint by numbers kits on Facebook and I think today I’ll succumb 🧐

Been trying to resist as clearly it’ll never be worth displaying but I have zero willpower so watch this space…

Chanel eye cream

Suprise toy bundles on tiktok 🙈
I'm so intrigued, so cheap aswell but know it will be a waste of money haha.

Journeyintomelody · 20/10/2024 10:12

Im always tempted by a pain by numbers set, moleskin notebooks and cross stitch pattern?!
Currently trying to stay off vinted however DD has just had another growth spurt - put her in a tartan Christmas dress this morning so she can get some wear out of it. It will probably be too small by December. A Strava subscription is tempting but unnecessary (I just want to see my stats!!). Also since the weather has changed I want to buy and eat copious amounts of food...not exactly tat but will be avoiding all supermarkets when hungry. DD has to go in fancy dress for Halloween, I managed to avoid spending money on a costume will wear once, however, Christmas pyjamas are too hard to resist...

An embroidery starter kit, which I know I'll get bored of and sit in my unfinished crafting hobbies box and will also be too crap to display. But honestly if you've got some disposable income and your paint by numbers will bring you some joy in doing it, why not succumb?

Merryoldgoat · 20/10/2024 10:22

@Lucas28 I’m not on TikTok mostly because I’m fairly sure I’ll buy ALL the tat 😱

@Journeyintomelody you’ve just reminded me I’ve not bought any notebooks this month 👌🏾

@TheFlakyPoster I’m a craft addict and I needed your post. I’m buying it 👌🏾

I'm not especially tempted by that, whether cheap or expensive as I don't like clutter.
But I'm trying very, very hard not to buy even more cookbooks I won't cook more than a recipe from.

Christmas wrapping paper. I have bundles of the stuff in the attic, I have no need for more but Cox and Cox etc keeps making me look at stuff

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 10:40

@Merryoldgoat what's your definition of "tat"?
I hate the phrase personally and it's used a lot on Mumsnet but I wouldn't have thought a paint by numbers kit is "tat" by mumsnet standards 🤔

Do it! And if you need some justification the weather is shit and you'll need some nice cozy indoor activities for the coming months. It's mindful and good for you (or something). I'm off to by my embroidery kit now. It can sit in the semi abandoned knitting and crochet box!

Lucas28 · 20/10/2024 10:56

Also books.
How many books I buy before iv finished one is unreal 🤣

I suppose I mean things I absolutely don’t need, and will clutter up my house but I’m drawn to them. It’s not necessarily bad or junk - just I know that it’s a short-lived or unnecessary nonsense for me.

Notebooks - not tat in and of themselves but I have a whole shelf of pretty unused ones already.

Painting kit - not intrinsically tat but I will do it then have to find somewhere to put it.

For context I sew, knit, crochet, have macrame stuff, paints, also tools as I like DIY.

I love crafty stuff but also like very little clutter. Two halves of my brain are competing.

The 'dipping powder' nail treatment/colour alternative to manicures. My FB feed is full of them. Anyone tried them? Or will the kit just end up at the bottom of the makeup drawer?!

Oh yes. I have a full gel nail kit with UV lamp. I have no nails as I bite them. Complete waste.

Fast fashion.

I'd had no idea how environmentally disastrous it was, but I do know that of late I've been buying clothes for how they feel as much as for how they look. At the same time I noticed that the quality of the 'high street', even higher-end brands, has taken a nosedive in recent years.

I've turned back to the vintage shopping I used to favour when I was a student and the difference in quality is very noticeable. I had my eye on a high street coat (I've wanted a camel-coloured coat for ages) - but in anything like a decent quality fabric we were talking £400. This year I've bought two wool and cashmere blend coats, one camel, one black, a tweed cape, a floor-length black coat with fur trim and collar, and a beautiful, vintage blazer of sooty black velvet with a gorgeous lining. Sum total: £265. That's five items for only two thirds of the price.

I think more regular trips to Brighton and its wonderful vintage shopping will be a must in future!

Books for me too.

I've got unread hardbacks. Which is fine. What's not fine is that these hardbacks are now not only in paperback but in charity shops as well which would have saved money 😂

My books have an overly complicated system though so it's my own fault

Exactly and although books are not "tat" .... Finding room for all the unread ones is becoming hard resulting in clutter 🤣

I keep telling myself it's good insulation for the walls and will saving on heating and acts as soundproofing too 😂

Pawparazzi · 20/10/2024 11:20

I'm confused. Are you saying the dipping powder kit is a waste, or that the UV lamp kit is a waste?

Stickers Envy
The sort you can use for journals or decorating your phone/ipad case. Or just hoarding because you have a fear of using them on the wrong thing and regretting it.............
