What tat are you trying not to buy??

Following on from last weeks ‘what’s pissed you off today’ thread, today I’m asking ‘What tat are you trying not to buy?’

I keep seeing paint by numbers kits on Facebook and I think today I’ll succumb 🧐

Been trying to resist as clearly it’ll never be worth displaying but I have zero willpower so watch this space…

Hoardes from TEMU. Three are en route as we speak, totalling £200. I keep wanting to go on the site and browse. I wish I could be banned!

EffinMagicFairy · 20/10/2024 11:27

Quite liking some of the crochet Christmas decorations that keep popping up, very tempted but never done crochet, attempted knitting which never got completed, did complete cross stitches. Thinking crochet will take me away from mindless scrolling in the evening and stop me making bigger purchases of stuff I don’t actually need. A crochet Christmas Tree decoration is within my attention span.

DelurkingAJ · 20/10/2024 11:30

Books are never tat. However…the fact that we need a new bookcase is something that I’m currently burying my head in the sand about as I continue to buy them (DSs are happily reading their way through my childhood collection so even DH has given up on suggesting getting rid of some and I frequently reread old favourites).

Edited because autocorrect can’t do ‘tat’!

Superworm24 · 20/10/2024 11:35

I've also looked into the dipping powder nail stuff. No idea if it's any good but I can't even find the time to file or paint my nails most weeks so it's doubtful that it would get used.

Mines always kitchen items. I found prime day difficult! Those ninja knives with the sharpening block, a new air fryer, the kitchen aid I've wanted for the last 20 years... I didn't buy anything. Ninja and shark (think they are the same company!) was made with me in mind.

mickandrorty · 20/10/2024 11:38

nail stickers i must have 50 plus sets, they look so nice but i rarely have the time to apply and leave to stick properly so they don't peel within hours.

Oh forgot about this!!

When you add loads of bits and bobs which you don't need because they're so cheap but then end up spending so much money !!

Username19781209 · 20/10/2024 11:39

I'm having a right leopard print phase at the moment I've got a few bits already in my wardrobe and I've brought one new dress but I just keep being drawn to more and more!

Superworm24 · 20/10/2024 11:40

And it's not that small kitchen appliances or vacuum cleaners are tat as such. It's more that I am taken in by the marketing. I think I truly believe that a new blender will change my life. It'll save my time and magic me into someone who is up and in gym kit at 6am. I'll be skinny and fit and my life will be amazing. But I just never use them consistently and I'm only ever up at that time with the baby in my grotty pyjama, normally with some breastmilk or vomit down my front!

Merryoldgoat · 20/10/2024 11:45

Pawparazzi · 20/10/2024 11:20

I'm confused. Are you saying the dipping powder kit is a waste, or that the UV lamp kit is a waste?

Oh sorry - no idea about the dipping kit but I’m tempted too even with my shonky no nails

All of the women at work are addicted to animal print. We look like a pack at lunch time on our walk 🤣

This a really made me laugh haha :)

The 'dipping powder' nail treatment/colour alternative to manicures. My FB feed is full of them. Anyone tried them? Or will the kit just end up at the bottom of the makeup drawer?!

I have the dipping powder by Sassy. Got drawn in by insta ads. The first time using it I did not get the smooth results as shown in their extreme marketing ads. My nails were hard and bumpy. After spending £70 odd, I persevered and second time I did my nails, I was content. I think the more you get the hang of its application, it makes sense. I truly hate going every two weeks to get my nails done. However, nails and pedicures are a must for me for grooming (short/simple colours).

The first set lasted me over two weeks. They actually looked nice from a distance. I did however chose a natural nude colour for my first attempt so that helped.

Would I buy it again? I think so.

ImaginativeUserName123 · 20/10/2024 12:35

I like a storage box myself. I've been to poundland and bought some more today. It's wrong to get so excited over storage and organising solutions but I do. Edited to say: misses entire point of thread of not buying tat.

Hatty65 · 20/10/2024 12:37

Cosy, 'fall' (or autumn) tat. Pumpkin decorations. Orange cushions, cosy throws. Pinecones, candles. Anything cinnamon/pumpkin/gingerbread spiced.

I don't need any more tat. But they do look nice.

sangriaandsunshine · 20/10/2024 12:38

Would you like to borrow my DH? He's very nice, a good sense of humour and an excellent cook but he does stand outside any sort of shop other than a supermarket muttering "it's tat" or "it's expensive tat" or, on being shown something which I have bought, asking "but what is it for?". This has rather cramped my love of tat buying.

Do it! Start now and you'll get 'hooked' and everyone you know will end up with one inside their Christmas card this year. Takes up no space, uses very little wool (which you can buy in charity shops), you can pop it in your bag and crochet on the bus... I love a pre-Christmas project like this!

Edited

They can be passed on.

I'm trying to get my wool stash for crochet under control

I try hard not to buy stuff but I love clothes so have bought a few new pieces

suburburban · 20/10/2024 12:49

I resisted the lakeland sale but so tempting

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 20/10/2024 13:14

Junk journal supplies, yarn, fabric and kindle books. I'll never live long enough to use what I already have 😂. DH has already offered to bury me with my Kindle and charger.

SaidTheLovecats · 20/10/2024 13:22

I’m determined not to buy any Christmas tat this year.

merryhouse · 20/10/2024 13:23

@sangriaandsunshine mine is exactly the same! (although he does tend to put kitchen gadgets on his Christmas list)

Books: whatever your current system, change to the one where you alternate buy-and-read with read-old-one; and (here's the kicker) you're not allowed to buy another until you're back to the buy-and-read phase.

Pumpkittenspice · 20/10/2024 13:30

I’m trying not to buy the following:

Lego sets

Books until I read the numerous I currently own, which are unread.

Notebooks… I can’t resist a nice notebook, though I do have several.

I wouldn’t describe any of these as that though.

smallsilvercloud · 20/10/2024 13:30

Trying to resist the urge to buy another coat just for it to be new this season, I have plenty that are still perfectly fine.
I have today given in and bought a hair keratin spray, skin serum, a loaf tin, a mascara (ignoring the other 5 I already have) and coffee pods.
I also half want a air fryer to see what the fuss is about but resisting the urge for now.

Overtheatlantic · 20/10/2024 13:35

Brushed cotton gingham bedding for colder weather. It’s actually a luxury but I love fresh bedding.

Suprise toy bundles on tiktok 🙈
I'm so intrigued, so cheap aswell but know it will be a waste of money haha.

Don’t do it. I spent £25 on a toy mystery box after seeing an advert on Instagram for some stocking fillers etc. I had relatively low expectations anyway but it was nothing like the examples they had shown on the advert and was all cheap, flimsy tat and nothing branded. I sent it back and took the brunt of the postage charge.
