What tat are you trying not to buy??

Following on from last weeks ‘what’s pissed you off today’ thread, today I’m asking ‘What tat are you trying not to buy?’

I keep seeing paint by numbers kits on Facebook and I think today I’ll succumb 🧐

Been trying to resist as clearly it’ll never be worth displaying but I have zero willpower so watch this space…

IKEA shit.

Needed a few larger bits (£370) yet there is almost £500 worth of stuff in my basket!! I keep going back to it, to see what I really do / don't need. Can't quite decide what to cull.

Think I'm just going to get DP to order what we need, minus all the crap.

Derrymum123 · 20/10/2024 16:27

Stationery I don't need. If it is reduced then I will buy it. Pens, notebooks, erasers, you name it. That section of the supermaket has an invisible, strong magnetic pull on me. I just have to wander down the stationery aisles if I pop in.

I've also looked into the dipping powder nail stuff. No idea if it's any good but I can't even find the time to file or paint my nails most weeks so it's doubtful that it would get used.

Mines always kitchen items. I found prime day difficult! Those ninja knives with the sharpening block, a new air fryer, the kitchen aid I've wanted for the last 20 years... I didn't buy anything. Ninja and shark (think they are the same company!) was made with me in mind.

I got the ninja knives with he sharpening block on prime day. They are brilliant.

Would you like to borrow my DH? He's very nice, a good sense of humour and an excellent cook but he does stand outside any sort of shop other than a supermarket muttering "it's tat" or "it's expensive tat" or, on being shown something which I have bought, asking "but what is it for?". This has rather cramped my love of tat buying.

It sounds like my husband. He’ll ask why I need it and will I use it. It was a lot easier before he WFH.

Argh no! I had told myself they would be rubbish and that I would treat myself to some expensive ones in the new year. I suppose there's always black Friday?

Even cutting turnip or butternut squash is like cutting through butter. I did cut myself as well so need to be careful with them.

Those would make excellent Christmas presents

Quite liking some of the crochet Christmas decorations that keep popping up, very tempted but never done crochet, attempted knitting which never got completed, did complete cross stitches. Thinking crochet will take me away from mindless scrolling in the evening and stop me making bigger purchases of stuff I don’t actually need. A crochet Christmas Tree decoration is within my attention span.

Beware! Yarn addiction is real.

Journeyintomelody · 20/10/2024 10:12

Im always tempted by a pain by numbers set, moleskin notebooks and cross stitch pattern?!
Currently trying to stay off vinted however DD has just had another growth spurt - put her in a tartan Christmas dress this morning so she can get some wear out of it. It will probably be too small by December. A Strava subscription is tempting but unnecessary (I just want to see my stats!!). Also since the weather has changed I want to buy and eat copious amounts of food...not exactly tat but will be avoiding all supermarkets when hungry. DD has to go in fancy dress for Halloween, I managed to avoid spending money on a costume will wear once, however, Christmas pyjamas are too hard to resist...

My aunty always gives my kids Christmas PJs as an early Christmas present at the beginning of December so at least they get a decent amount of use out of them throughout the advent period. The elves then give them some fancy PJs to wear on Christmas eve and Christmas morning. The fancy PJs tend to get worn a lot more than the Christmas ones throughout the rest of the year

Owly11 · 20/10/2024 16:47

Anything that promises to make my life easier or warmer, but ends up unused in a kitchen cupboard, drawer, attic or garage. Been eyeing up steam cleaners, electric cleaners, and carpet cleaners recently.

Mine's just retired. Now I have to explain all the ebay parcels, instead of just hiding them while he was at work.😂

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/10/2024 16:51

Nogaxeh · 20/10/2024 15:33

Anything and everything to do with my hobbies. I already have enough stuff to probably last me a lifetime, but I have to struggle against the compulsion to buy more.

I have more than 25km of yarn. It takes me at least a month to use up 400m in knitting. I therefore have a minimum of five years of knitting already in the house. And that's just for knitting.

But look at these colours. Aren't they gorgeous? I don't even know what I'd knit with them, but they are lovely and I want them. Ugh. Buying compulsion is so bad.

Some things you just get out, look at, think about - & put them away again until next time.

I have a lot of those.

Buy it! Seconded. You deserve it.

Happyinarcon · 20/10/2024 16:57

Ruthietuthie · 20/10/2024 16:00

Definitely tat. I REALLY want to buy some tomb-stones for our front garden. We live in an area (in the US) where a lot of the neighborhood decorates for Halloween (and where upwards of 5000 children come trick or treating on Halloween evening). I can't find any that aren't cheap, nasty, made of painted foam... and don't want these, as I want something I can bring out every year. But I also know that REALLY I don't need these things. My little boy wants to decorate, and it would be fun, plus our front garden would be perfect for this, but I am trying to resist.

I made some cardboard tombstones with my kid and her friend on a play date. It was a fun activity and they looked surprisingly good, but Halloween decorating is a bit half arsed in my neck of the woods so I understand if diy won’t cut it in your neighborhood

GoldenLegend · 20/10/2024 16:58

Anything Halloween including chocolate which I would eat myself.

Anything Christmas until December.

000EverybodyLovesTheSunshine000 · 20/10/2024 17:01

Supplements. More of them.

BunnyLake · 20/10/2024 17:02

Ruthietuthie · 20/10/2024 16:09

Thank you, @BunnyLake. It's a historic neighborhood in the middle of a big city, so children from all over the city come here. Last year, my next door neighbors gave out two sacks (like the size of a large sack of potatoes) full of treats. We set up a stand in front of our house offering treats for children and cocktails for accompanying parents. Last year we served Mint Juleps. The whole neighborhood gets involved.

Sounds amazing!

VimtoVimto · 20/10/2024 17:12

I knit and am generally happy with what I knit but I have probably enough yarn to last me 15 years so am trying to restrict what I buy. I’m addicted to trying other crafts I see on Instagram but that usually means buying a kit, deciding my efforts look nothing like what I imagined so shove it in a cupboard. I currently have felt on order to make Christmas decorations to give as presents.

When I retired I decided to get back into dressmaking but it costs a fortune to make something that looks decidedly homemade and not in a good way.

Ruthietuthie · 20/10/2024 17:17

@Zebracat, this is such a good idea. And yes, this is definitely something it would be fun (and quite easy) to make. We have a pumpkin carving party for the whole neighborhood next weekend. The neighborhood provides the pumpkins and warm apple cider (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and all the pumpkins that are left in the park are lit each evening until Halloween. I think we could definitely add a craft activity and that many people would be interested. And I would much rather make something that lasted rather than buy something flimsy.

'Tat' is subjective.

I wouldn't call a 'paint by numbers' 'tat'. I'd class it as an activity I wanted to do. The point of it being the activity, not the result.

if I wanted 'A piece of Art' I'd buy a piece of Art I liked, by someone talented 😂

I don't call notebooks 'tat' either.

Yeah but plenty of Christmas PJ wearing after Christmas! And if you buy them in a generous size after they're about 3 you can get a good couple of winters out of them. No different to non Christmas PJ's.

Christmas wrapping paper. I have bundles of the stuff in the attic, I have no need for more but Cox and Cox etc keeps making me look at stuff

If you like it & can easily afford to buy it (no underfed children!!😂) just donate the other rolls to a charity shop in plenty of time for Christmas. 🤷🏻‍♀️
