What tat are you trying not to buy??

Following on from last weeks ‘what’s pissed you off today’ thread, today I’m asking ‘What tat are you trying not to buy?’

I keep seeing paint by numbers kits on Facebook and I think today I’ll succumb 🧐

Been trying to resist as clearly it’ll never be worth displaying but I have zero willpower so watch this space…

Bollocks.

Bought the kit. Plus a laser level. And some plywood for a Christmas decoration idea I saw.

FFS.

Pretty much everything.

I'm trying to declutter and while things come into the house the pile never goes down!

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/10/2024 14:48

I have an entire wall of shelving with yarn, patterns and cross stitch kits. In my defence, it’s a small room. Some of the cross stitch has been started, in fact, most hs been started, then left to wither. There are baskets with unfinished knitting, mostly because I hate sewing up and doing button bands and necklines.

Why do I now want to buy more chunky yarn, to make a throw for the bed? It’s ridiculous. There’s really only one thing stopping me. Well, two, one of which is the look on DH’s face when a large box appears, but the main reason is, I can’t afford it. At least it means I’m not cluttering up the house with more unfinished stuff.

MidnightPatrol · 20/10/2024 14:56

Christmas stuff.

a) it’s October

b) I already have lots of Christmas stuff, in the attic.

I’ll have to get the Christmas stuff out at some point in Nov just to avoid me buying loads more.

Yes it is difficult

I have some cross stitch incomplete

I prefer crochet and tend to finish the projects

Also books.
How many books I buy before iv finished one is unreal 🤣

Books are absolutely NOT tat!!

ThinWomansBrain · 20/10/2024 15:26

beauty advent calendars

came across a 'this years top ten' article yesterday - most are £££
I know I'll end up with a drawerful of sample sixed products I'll never use.

Zebracat · 20/10/2024 15:30

A large amount of plants from a slightly suspect site. The would work well in my north facing border, if they are good. However, I would first have to remove all the plants currently not doing well, and spend hours preparing in the cold and wet. I think my purse is in my swimming kit. I’m trying not to find it.

AllTheAll · 20/10/2024 15:30

I think I read that the first rule of decluttering is to NOT buy organisational items. But I have rearranged some bathroom storage and legitimately want to buy some (handy, attractive, not tat) organisers. I think I'm going to give in. If that's tat then I don't want to be tatless.

Nogaxeh · 20/10/2024 15:33

Anything and everything to do with my hobbies. I already have enough stuff to probably last me a lifetime, but I have to struggle against the compulsion to buy more.

I have more than 25km of yarn. It takes me at least a month to use up 400m in knitting. I therefore have a minimum of five years of knitting already in the house. And that's just for knitting.

But look at these colours. Aren't they gorgeous? I don't even know what I'd knit with them, but they are lovely and I want them. Ugh. Buying compulsion is so bad.

I’m trying not to be an enabler, but even if I have bought storage boxes for one place. Then later decide I don’t want the storage in that place anymore, I always find use for the storage elsewhere e.g to organise my DIY cupboard. 😊

Books are absolutely NOT tat!!

They kinda are when you still have over 70 books on your shelves that you previously bought and haven't read yet.

At first I thought it was great when I started knitting and my OH did too. We can share this fun hobby together!

But we're terrible about encouraging each other to make more yarn purchases. There's no social disapproval or limitation from that direction at all.

AliTheMinx · 20/10/2024 15:40

A special cranberry sauce dish. I can't stop thinking about it - even though we only ever have it once a year - on Christmas Day...and I am allergic to red berries, so I can't even eat cranberry sauce!!! [A few months ago, I bought a Stilton scoop, which I know I'll never use, but it looked so stylish. It's now at the back of the cupboard!]

Bbq1 · 20/10/2024 15:41

Still not "tat"!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/10/2024 15:42

Anything 'crafty'. It's not tat for anyone who is good at crafting. For me it's just tat. I KNOW me.

SouperWorm · 20/10/2024 15:44

DieDreiHexen · 20/10/2024 10:24

I'm not especially tempted by that, whether cheap or expensive as I don't like clutter.
But I'm trying very, very hard not to buy even more cookbooks I won't cook more than a recipe from.

If you would like a Spicery referral code for £5 I'm happy to enable you 😊

The kits are excellent, they contain a themed book and a set of spices and you can make loads of different things really easily. Its genuinely changed my cooking!

They currently have 33% off the Legend Kits this month, with free postage, a free sample and a free recipe calendar. Plus you'll get 10% off using my referral code (as will I for my next order).

They are a genuinely great, Bristol-based company and I wouldn't refer them if I didn't love them.

PS anyone can use this code, it's not one time limited.

Sorry to sound advertisey, but they just tick all my boxes! I blame my BIL for trial kit xmas gift 🎁

Legend Month

It's Legend Month at the Spicery! Huge discounts, games and double Legend Points!

@sangriaandsunshine mine is exactly the same! (although he does tend to put kitchen gadgets on his Christmas list)

Books: whatever your current system, change to the one where you alternate buy-and-read with read-old-one; and (here's the kicker) you're not allowed to buy another until you're back to the buy-and-read phase.

I'd never be able to buy a book again.

I've got a floor to ceiling shelf and one half the size, all filled with double rows on each shelf. These are books that I will keep because of favourite author or book etc. About 1600 books, maybe 600 unread.

3 of the trollies all filled. About 280 books. These will be read and given away.

A 3 shelf Billy bookcase of hardbacks I will read and not keep, none read about 80 books there.

And 4 Billy bookcases of hardbacks and special editions (spredges and signed) that I will read and keep around 700 books there, 4 hundred or so unread

About 500 on my kindle but that doesn't count.

The.most annoying part? I've read 74 books this year, all bloody library books!!!!

Ruthietuthie · 20/10/2024 16:00

Definitely tat. I REALLY want to buy some tomb-stones for our front garden. We live in an area (in the US) where a lot of the neighborhood decorates for Halloween (and where upwards of 5000 children come trick or treating on Halloween evening). I can't find any that aren't cheap, nasty, made of painted foam... and don't want these, as I want something I can bring out every year. But I also know that REALLY I don't need these things. My little boy wants to decorate, and it would be fun, plus our front garden would be perfect for this, but I am trying to resist.

BunnyLake · 20/10/2024 16:01

Nothing. I never buy tat or ‘stuff’ unless it has a specific purpose. I used to be a bit of a spender but have had a lot of money stresses over the years so now that I feel more settled I have no desire to buy anything unless I need it. The last thing I did buy though which hopefully won’t become ‘stuff’ is a slow cooker.

5000 wow. I’ve lived in my house for thirteen years and have never had a single trick or treater. I’m hidden away so people don’t even know it exists (which I love).

Hope you find your stones 🤞

Ruthietuthie · 20/10/2024 16:09

Thank you, @BunnyLake. It's a historic neighborhood in the middle of a big city, so children from all over the city come here. Last year, my next door neighbors gave out two sacks (like the size of a large sack of potatoes) full of treats. We set up a stand in front of our house offering treats for children and cocktails for accompanying parents. Last year we served Mint Juleps. The whole neighborhood gets involved.

Ramblomatic · 20/10/2024 16:13

I'm desperately, desperately trying to resist the temptation of buying a load of those Treasure X/Zuru Smashers 'unboxing' toys.

Not for a kid, for me.

I'm 40 😭

I’m not very crafty, but I would have thought you could knock up some tombstones out of cardboard and paint, or even cast some from concrete if you want to get fancy. As it’s a big thing in the community, you could maybe invite your neighbours to a home made Halloween workshop?

Bobbinsbop · 20/10/2024 16:21

a punch needle kit - in my head I will creat something fab in reality i'm awful at anything crafty.
