What tat are you trying not to buy??

Following on from last weeks ‘what’s pissed you off today’ thread, today I’m asking ‘What tat are you trying not to buy?’

I keep seeing paint by numbers kits on Facebook and I think today I’ll succumb 🧐

Been trying to resist as clearly it’ll never be worth displaying but I have zero willpower so watch this space…

Moleskin notebooks are NOT tat! I have used the week-per-double page A5 format for years. DH buys me one each Christmas, and I am accumulating a nice backlog of filled ones. Daily use, year ahead planned, brilliant things. I do throw out the little sheafs of stickers that come with them though, as life is too short to work out a system for using them that would make planning easier.

But I am trying not to buy ANY of the other tat. I have a dream of a more minimal life, in which everything I own is perfectly fitted for its precise purpose, and I skim lightly through the world. My specific challenge at this point is trying not to top up the Christmas lights and decorations excessively.

I suppose I mean things I absolutely don’t need, and will clutter up my house but I’m drawn to them. It’s not necessarily bad or junk - just I know that it’s a short-lived or unnecessary nonsense for me.

Notebooks - not tat in and of themselves but I have a whole shelf of pretty unused ones already.

Painting kit - not intrinsically tat but I will do it then have to find somewhere to put it.

Tip??

@AutumnLeaves24 yes this thread is confusing me. What people are describing as "tat" is not what I thought tat was meant to be.
People are just describing normal "things" 🤔

For context I sew, knit, crochet, have macrame stuff, paints, also tools as I like DIY.

I love crafty stuff but also like very little clutter. Two halves of my brain are competing.

I understand that.

my solution is to have a storage space that I am happy to designate to 'supplies' and if it fits in there, fine, if not something has to go 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had an absolute win during lockdowns…….those (really nice) jigsaws I brought home from Mum’s did at last get done🤩 So therapeutic at the time and we did actually frame a fabulous Yorkshire Grand Depart one, it’s in attic which is our fitness/bike den. But they are back under the spare bed now……….but the dark nights are back, TV is rubbish……….🤔
I’m a crafter as well, soo many different things to try, wool in every room, I have a sort out every now and then. Never bored though. OH, he’s been pickling onions today…….I kid you not🤣🤣🤣🤣

@ruthietuthie Excellent, just don’t overdo buying the craftsupplies. I’m quite jealous actually, all we have is a pumpkin.

Quite liking some of the crochet Christmas decorations that keep popping up, very tempted but never done crochet, attempted knitting which never got completed, did complete cross stitches. Thinking crochet will take me away from mindless scrolling in the evening and stop me making bigger purchases of stuff I don’t actually need. A crochet Christmas Tree decoration is within my attention span.

Start with a granny square!!

Bollocks.

Bought the kit. Plus a laser level. And some plywood for a Christmas decoration idea I saw.

FFS.

Thank you, @BunnyLake. It's a historic neighborhood in the middle of a big city, so children from all over the city come here. Last year, my next door neighbors gave out two sacks (like the size of a large sack of potatoes) full of treats. We set up a stand in front of our house offering treats for children and cocktails for accompanying parents. Last year we served Mint Juleps. The whole neighborhood gets involved.

@Ruthietuthie have you tried reclaimed stone yards they may not be gravestones but you could repurpose slabs as grave stones?

Merryoldgoat · 20/10/2024 20:28

@AutumnLeaves24 🤣🤣🤣

I visit the tip frequently. It’s embarrassing 😱

Crafts have a lot to answer for. 3 years ago I had a small cloth drawer set for my hooks and yarn.

Now I have a 5x5 Kallax 🫢

Plywood is for a bauble tree base.

Level is for a photo wall I forgot I was doing.
