I also have 2 degrees from Cambridge but its more extraordinary that im able to annihilate a cheap greasy kebab shop treat like a rabid hound in literal minutes

Many years ago and with a fabulous group of women, I bid for, and secured, funding for a Rape Crisis Centre in the second largest county in England. And it is still supporting survivors of rape today.

Survived and recovered from anorexia nervosa, constant suicidal ideation, and self injury.

Well done @Owly11 !! I'm doing my grade 7 next month, also took it up as an adult. Best thing I've ever done 👍

Ok now I feel have to do this now and stop making excuses!!

Bannedontherun · 13/10/2024 21:44

I do love this thread

@Bannedontherun

That's very impressive!

Ran the qualifying time to get on the championship start at the London marathon.

Same, this is one of my proudest achievements! Well done 👏

Bluebunnylover · 13/10/2024 22:06

I’m autistic and get drained from speaking to people and hate public speaking but am a marketing manager! Thank god for hybrid working so I can rebalance at home

LadyFlumpalot · 13/10/2024 20:54

Ahhh that's brilliant! I dabble in metal clay and my dream is to take a proper silver smithing course. Well done!

Thank you. My stuff is at Forge. I was worried. Its not 'normal' jewellery. I thought Id be laughed out of the house. They are monsterously large oversized, probably belong on a catwalk or weird fashion shoot about the bronze age type things, so I was blown away when someone bought the earrings

NettleTea · 13/10/2024 23:13

everything on this thread is wonderful. we can all do anything.

JaceLancs · 13/10/2024 23:18

I’ve raised 2.5 million in funding for the charity I’m CEO of which has allowed us to help 1000s of vulnerable people
Personally I’ve survived years of being a lone parent am intensely proud of my adult DC and their achievements

exarchaeologist · 13/10/2024 23:20

I was once part of an expedition that discovered a lost city in a jungle in an equatorial country..(not by accident, we’d been looking for it for years using info based on local legends and rumours).

I passed my driving test on my 13th attempt. I'm not a bad driver, I just suffer with horrific test/exam anxiety. The important thing is that I did it (finally).

Previously I thought I held some kind of record for this, 8th attempt.

AnonyMouse80 · 14/10/2024 07:25

This thread is wonderful but also how do you all do it? I feel like I barely get through the week sometimes with my toddler and work, let alone getting a degree or learning a language on top! And yes I have a fully supportive partner who does housework and parenting probably better than I do.

Hmmm… but in my pre toddler days I ran a half marathon, my first and only, in 2 hrs 4 min. I was never a sporty kid at school, I always skipped cross country days and hated PE, so doing any kind of running at all especially of that distance was definitely an achievement.

I also got my driving licence as an adult. I took a one week intensive course and then a few additional weekend lessons and passed it first go. However since then I’ve barely driven and I totally lost my driving confidence, so what I’m proud of recently is having pushed myself out of my comfort zone to get it back. I’ve recently driven myself to visit a friend 2 hrs away. That’s been a big win.

Ah that's brilliant - good luck with your exam. There seem to be a few of us 😊

Enoughwiththisshit · 13/10/2024 20:53

Huge congratulations, Owly11! That's a brilliant achievement! How many years and how much practice did it take you to get to grade 8? I'm a middle aged beginner and cello is sitting looking at me sorrowfully because I'm not practising at the moment due to pain in my left little finger, which keeps locking during practice... 😭

It's taken me 5 years with an amazing teacher and a lot of hard work! I probably started off practice around half an hour a day, building up to an hour a day. Sometimes on weekends if I have time I might do 2 hours a day. And then in the build up to an exam I would do more. I think it's common to have difficulty curling the little finger of the left hand, but I can't remember what the solution is. There's quite a few cello groups on facebook where you could probably get some decent advice. Have you got a teacher?

Just sat my grade 8 cello today having taken it up in middle age 5 years ago. So proud of myself and had to overcome so many demons to do it.

👏👏
You have spurred me on to my goal of G5 piano!

Fantastic - go for it! Best of luck!

Greywarden · 14/10/2024 08:38

I see my biggest achievement as having learned (at least some) social skills. I'm fairly sure I'm autistic (haven't gone down pathway of diagnosis so acknowledge I don't know for sure - I certainly have a lot of the traits). Spent a lot of my childhood feeling like an alien with little ability to connect with anyone else. I'm now married, have lovely friends, am raising a DC and work as a therapist. I often get to help people with high levels of autistic traits or difficulties with social skills and emotional regulation in my role and feel my life experience actually helps rather than hinders me.

It is tiring to have to do a lot of performing / putting on a front with people but I just about get enough down time to bounce back from that.

Greywarden · 14/10/2024 08:42

Oh and learning to run during lockdown. Had never even run down the length of my (fairly short) road before i started. Always very unfit and unsporty. Ended up doing a half marathon every week for a month, and that was 7 months after starting couch to 5k.

Now to get back to it post-having my little'un...

wulves · 14/10/2024 08:54

Finally getting help for anxiety disorders from my GP. My extreme anxiety was a catch-22 which stopped me from getting help, and I had panic attacks doing it but I’m feeling so much better now. I feel like I’m getting a life back.

overdog · 14/10/2024 09:02

The thing I'm most proud of is raising three successful guide dog puppies who've gone on to change people's lives for the better 🐶

ZekeZeke · 14/10/2024 09:10

Sober 8 years and counting

JHound · 14/10/2024 09:36

I love this thread!

I have none that I can think of (though others may disagree). Maybe being moderately successful which appears to be completely at odds with most of the people of my background (when I look at the girls I went to school with.)

EdwinaKenchington · 14/10/2024 09:37

I changed careers in my late thirties, taught myself to paint and now my paintings are in galleries all over the UK and on cruise ships. I get a massive buzz when I see one in the wild. The last time I saw one was on a Norwegian cruise.

ehb102 · 14/10/2024 10:00

I got the head teacher in the stocks and smacked them in the face with a wet sponge, twice.

I have stopped people complusive eating, compulsive cleaning and self harming through my work. I've made it so many women have been set free from damage that was done to them. My sports clients have gone on to win things, once the barrier was taken down.
