To announce pregnancy at birthday party

My mother is having a party soon to celebrate a milestone birthday.

Husband and I have been TTC for almost a couple of years now, which mum knows about and is excited for. We’ve recently found out I’m pregnant, and the date of her party will be just after our 12 week scan, so we wanted to announce it at the party - nobody knows yet.

I’m youngest child and this will be my first baby. Mum has three grandkids already, all are young adults now and one of those has two kids too. Mum is very maternal and loves having babies and kids in the family.

I think she will be delighted for us but just wondering if it’s poor form to announce at her birthday party, is it like a lesser version of announcing it at a wedding or something.

OP posts:

Don’t announce it, just tell her, and definitely not at the party. Her party isn’t your showboat moment.

”Announcements” are look-at-me attention-seeking nonsense. You don’t need applause, you’re a grown woman. Just tell people. Or put it in the family WhatsApp, or whatever.

JMSA · 13/10/2024 15:49

Also, I suspect she's the type of person who does a lot for everyone, so the day should definitely revolve around her and her alone.

itwasnevermine · 13/10/2024 15:50

@265IceCream it reeks of OP making the day about her.

mambojambodothetango · 13/10/2024 15:50

I can't imagine making an announcement. But then i hate being the centre of attention - and it's your Mum's day to be that. Just let it come out when people notice you're not drinking. Or if you must have an announcement do it the next day.

WeeOrcadian · 13/10/2024 15:51

Absolutely NOT

Tell her beforehand or afterwards

Wells37 · 13/10/2024 15:51

If it was my daughter I would be delighted and so excited for her. If you have a good relationship and she will be pleased why not. Maybe give her the heads up before but I would be so excited to tell everyone xx

BettyBardMacDonald · 13/10/2024 15:51

Tell her the day before as an "early birthday gift."

If she wants to broadcast it during her party, no problem.

JFDIYOLO · 13/10/2024 15:53

RUDE.
You may need to tell her in advance so she doesn't ask why you aren't drinking at her party.

Then she might invite you to announce it then, or she might not. Her call.

DreamW3aver · 13/10/2024 15:53

You don't need to announce anything, see Meghan M and Princess Eugenie

Lovely news for you but not an upstaging situation

GreenTeaLikesMe · 13/10/2024 15:53

What does "announce" mean? I mean, are you thinking of jingling a fork against your wine glass and asking for a hushed silence so you can ANNOUNCE your big news? Or do you just mean that you will share the news if anyone asks what's going on in your life recently?

The first is obviously a bit cringy in any circumstances; the latter is perfectly normal, whether you are at a birthday or not.

I'm quietly rolling my eyes at all the "It will take the focus away from YOUR MUM'S BIRTHDAY" stuff. The person with the birthday is not a 10yo, but an older woman who has had plenty of birthdays. By this point in life, most of us just think of a birthday party as an excuse to hold a get-together with friends, and it's as much about the friends' as it is about the person whose birthday it is.

Wells37 · 13/10/2024 15:54

Seriously some of these answers are so sad

Differentstarts · 13/10/2024 15:54

What do you mean announce it. Like stop the music grab the mic and make a speech infront of like a 100 people. I hate to break it to you but apart from you and your immediate family nobody gives a 💩

Humphreyshead · 13/10/2024 15:56

I think it’s lovely! My dbro and his girlfriend did this by putting the scan in a card. It was the best birthday pressie for my mum. She loved it

SnaggingList · 13/10/2024 15:56

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Tell your mum beforehand.

To announce you are pregnant on an occasion or during an event that is meant to be all about somebody else, is a bit of a 'Meghan Markle' move tbh -

I suspect a lot of the replies here are from younger folk, rather than the grannies.

Bugger that, @AuldSpookySewers ! I’d be the grandmother and no, I don’t want my 60th or 70th to be about my latest grandchild.

I love my children to bits. But they’ve come first in 90% of things in my life since they were born.

I would like to have my birthday party with my friends and family without it being about my youngest’s pregnancy.

I can be just as thrilled the day before or after.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 13/10/2024 15:58

I wouldn't purely because even if your Mum is thrilled and doesn't mind, other people at the party are likely to be a bit wtf? And will talk about you in a negative manner.

Exactly.

Women, mothers and grandmothers especially, are expected to give themselves to everyone all the time. She's probably looking forward to a day about her.

100% agree.

BeautyPageantDropout · 13/10/2024 15:25

I'm assuming it's her 60th or 70th? I can't imagine getting to that point in life and feeling 'upstaged' by good news. Confused

I'd have thought it would just add to celebratory mood of the day, but others seem to think differently!

This is what I’m thinking. I’m actually pretty surprised at how people are reacting to this.

It’s very childish of someone to feel upstaged or thunder stolen by becoming a grandmother

Berlinlover · 13/10/2024 16:00

Don’t announce it, everyone will be embarrassed for you.

I definitely wouldn't talk about her negatively if it were me but other people are weird anyway.

itwasnevermine · 13/10/2024 16:01

@Humphreyshead it's equally childish and selfish to think that a woman who has had her identity reduced down to being a grandmother might want one day about her, rather than her children and their children?

januaryjan · 13/10/2024 16:01

Maybe you could organise a little get together after the birthday to announce you are pregnant.
Congratulations btw.
