Blackpool pleasure beach

I just visited Blackpool and I Had a nice time going around the beach and activities.

But honestly- Blackpool pleasure beach - what are they thinking! Some of the rides are so old and dangerous, I don't know how they are allowed at all.

It was the first time that I went .

I went on one ride, and it went extremely high. It was like an old fashioned rollrr coaster, but you were sitting on a horse. It's called steeple chase.

. There was the tiniest old fashioned seat belt on the horse, like a car seat belt. Except it was just a horizontal belt. The material of the belt looked old, worn and thin. And it didn't hold you on properly.

You had to grip with your hands onto the handle bars. This ride went extremely high and it was extremely fast and jerky, and i was nearly jerked out of the seat several times. If the ride jerked and you fell out of the seat , you would slip through the seat belt and you would fall a very long way down. I was holding on for dear life. I very nearly came off and fell once.

People were getting off the ride at the end and were crying and looking extremely stressed.

The guy running the ride laughed and said to us "you won't do that ride again in a hurry will you haha". Because he knew it was bad

I saw other rides in the park, where the metal holding the ride up looked completely rusted through.

I don't know how the park is allowed from a health and safety standpoint?

Steeple Chase was scary and unsafe 25 years ago! Terrible that it's still going

EngineStartStop · 12/10/2024 21:27

Yeah, I’ve never gone near the horse one for that reason. I’m sure safety checks are done but nah, not one for me.

Mademetoxic · 12/10/2024 21:27

That is my favourite ride! It's been there since 1959 I believe.

I love the carousel 😀

Goballistic · 12/10/2024 21:28

I went last weekend and had a great time

SabreIsMyFave · 12/10/2024 21:30

Is that the one that used to be called The Grand National - (The Steeple Chase?)

I haven't been to the Pleasure Beach in 15+ years, since they started charging you to go in - £30+ I think. I don't go on the big scary rides now. I used to love them, up to about 35 y.o, but they scare me too much now! So the admission fee would be a waste of money?

Motheranddaughter · 12/10/2024 21:32

Go every year and love it

Sarahconnor1 · 12/10/2024 21:32

The steeplechase has been like that for decades 😂

HootyMcBooby · 12/10/2024 21:34

Actually, daughter just back from there with a friend and also complained about that particular ride, said it was very uncomfortable and sore and they nearly fell off several times.

Mademetoxic · 12/10/2024 21:34

Oh, you're on about the horse racing one? I love that ride too, one of my favourites.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/10/2024 21:35

No, Grand National is the two rollercoasters that 'race' each other. Steeple Chase is a row of 4 (?) fake horses (like big carousel horses) that you sit on and they 'race' each other.

I love both! I always thought the Steeple Chase was pretty tame. Certainly never seen anyone crying on or off it!

MuddlingMackem · 12/10/2024 21:35

@SabreIsMyFave · Today 21:30

No, Grand National has two coasters which race against each other. Steeplechase is the horses. I go on neither - I don't do coasters. 😁

It's really bad!

It's the worst ride I've ever been on, health and safety wise.

I remember thinking - I can't believe this is allowed!

The steeplechase is terrifying! You genuinely feel like you could slip off it (I have no idea how this hasn’t happened yet)
Great fun though!

It's terrifying!!

Haha . I'm still shook.

I went on the newer rollercoasters there and they were no problem

It was that old steeplechase one that was terrifying.

Have they not updated the health and safety once on it since the 1960s

Cat and mouse was always the worst. Guaranteed whiplash

Steeplechase used to scare me as a kid though

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 21:42

It's not so much that it's a scary rollercoaster.

It's the seatbelt. It doesn't hold you in properly.

And when you go up very high, you need a proper seatbelt.

That ride was shit scary in 2000 can't believe it's still up and running

I was gonna say. Steeplechase is very tame compared to Cat and Mouse. It's no longer there actually as I'm pretty sure someone fell out of it shortly before it was removed.

yesornothatisthequestion · 12/10/2024 21:43

I went as a teenager and on one ride our car got stuck at a standstill and then the next car behind us slammed into the back of us. It was so painful and utterly terrifying.

Yeah I'm genuinely shocked that it's allowed to run..the seatbelts barely hold you in.

I remember cat and mouse in the 90s at morecombe. It was ridiculously rickety and terrifying then. No idea if it is still there, but I can’t believe steeple chase is still going and the same!

Squeezetheday · 12/10/2024 21:46

Oh my god as if steeplechase is still there 😂 remember going on that as a teenager and thinking the end was nigh!

Cat and mouse as PP have said was also horrendous, think I went on once then realised the neck pain was not worth it!

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 21:46

What kind of ride was cat and mouse?

Thanks @HundredMilesAnHour and @MuddlingMackem Actually, now you have described it, I do remember the Steeple Chase! And yes it is different to the Grand National!
