Blackpool pleasure beach

I just visited Blackpool and I Had a nice time going around the beach and activities.

But honestly- Blackpool pleasure beach - what are they thinking! Some of the rides are so old and dangerous, I don't know how they are allowed at all.

It was the first time that I went .

I went on one ride, and it went extremely high. It was like an old fashioned rollrr coaster, but you were sitting on a horse. It's called steeple chase.

. There was the tiniest old fashioned seat belt on the horse, like a car seat belt. Except it was just a horizontal belt. The material of the belt looked old, worn and thin. And it didn't hold you on properly.

You had to grip with your hands onto the handle bars. This ride went extremely high and it was extremely fast and jerky, and i was nearly jerked out of the seat several times. If the ride jerked and you fell out of the seat , you would slip through the seat belt and you would fall a very long way down. I was holding on for dear life. I very nearly came off and fell once.

People were getting off the ride at the end and were crying and looking extremely stressed.

The guy running the ride laughed and said to us "you won't do that ride again in a hurry will you haha". Because he knew it was bad

I saw other rides in the park, where the metal holding the ride up looked completely rusted through.

I don't know how the park is allowed from a health and safety standpoint?

I don’t know why anyone goes on the rides there. There’s no way they’re properly maintained. A woman fell 30ft through a hole in the pier in the summer.

What does the pier have to do with the Pleasure Beach? The only connection is that they're both in Blackpool but they're not even near each other, let alone managed/owned by the same people.

Here you go

Jeez that looks like a death trap. They don't even have a safety barrier at the sides of some of it

1994 I went on that and it was terrifying! Jerky and high. Loved it -- surprised it is allowed these days but you never hear about accidents so maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

Pier and pleasure beach are totally different, not the same company.

I went to the pleasure beach with my teens kids and i went on it - i don't think its that bad - I'm 7st and didn't feel like i was going to fall out. Only complaint would be the jerking especially at the end when it comes to a stop, bruised my shins.

Rantypanties · 12/10/2024 22:11

People get bruises on the Nemesis ride from knocking their head around in the neck brace, people get bruises on the twister rides at the fair, people get sore from being locked into tight hip bars on fast rides. The steeple chase is not unusual in this. It is the last ride of its kind left in the world with no documented serious incidents so no reason why it should be demolished!

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 22:14

How do you add a video in the thread?

Edited

The seatbelt definitely doesn't meet current safety standards though.

You take your life into your own hands going on the Steeplechase. I love it but it hurts your bum even if you survive the ride 😂 I took DS (10) last year and he was white as a ghost when we came off it.

Rantypanties · 12/10/2024 22:20

There haven’t been any accidents reported so how is the seat belt not meeting current safety standards?

Looked and felt like a normal seat belt to me. It didn't used to have one- it was an extra safety measure.

Haha.

I can laugh about it a bit now from the safety of the ground.

But I remember sitting on it and praying to anyone "please let me just survive this ride"

And thinking "right I must nearly be there" while I was being slammed around at a height

Steeplechase is not high at all. Get a wee bit of a grip 😂

Because I can feel that I could slip right through it. If it's not tight enough to keep me on, it's not safe.

If you look online, lots of people are complaining about steeplechase

Of course its high.

If you fell from it you definitely would be severely injured.

What has someone falling through the pier got to do with The Pleasure Beach theme park? The Pleasure Beach is completely separate to the piers.

I found the worst thing about Steeplechase is when you slide back in the seat and it jabs into the small of your back 😂

Im a regular visitor to the theme park and Icon and Valhalla are amazing rides. Most of the others could definitely do with an upgrade. The Big Dipper and Grand National, even the orange roller coaster in Nickelodeon land are so rickety. I can remember going on Revolution and Infusion when they first opened and they are so rough now in comparison, I won’t be going in those two again as they are painful.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 12/10/2024 22:23

I think the biggest danger is the end stop, the amount of people in saw butt heads at the end was painful.

I made a mental note to get ready for that grinding stop. My DD12 loved it.

Here is the steeplechase ride for anyone interested.

See how high it goes in the second half of the video.

also see that you're being flung along a long mono rail.

Know that It jerks and flails you about at every turn, as its an old mechanism and the ride is very old.(1970s)

So with each turn and move -you are jerked and flung forward and nearly off the horse . While you're at a great height.

Now know that your seatbelt is an extremely thin band of material.

That is steeplechase!

Yeah, I’ve never gone near the horse one for that reason. I’m sure safety checks are done but nah, not one for me.

The Grand National perchance? It was more dangerous than Beecher's Brook 40 years ago!

Stichintime · 12/10/2024 22:26

I remember going on the aeroplanes, by the entrance I think. I cried and ducked down because lack of safety bar, my young son thought my reaction was hysterical, and pretended to fall out a couple of times! He had a great time and we both survived!

Rantypanties · 12/10/2024 22:27

IT HASNT HAD AN ACCIDENT SINCE IT OPENED.

A lot of old rides are rickety, Nemesis was until they retracked it this year and that is, what? 30 years old? Whilst I’m not a fan of the Thompsons, this park isn’t any worse than the Merlin ones.

Why didn’t you do this much research into the ride before you got on it? Would have saved you some bruises.

Yeah the aeroplanes were another one that caught my eye as looking very unsafe.

They are hanging from a metal band. And the metal band is rusted all over. It's full of rust.

So we should wait for an accident, or for someone to die, for it to be updated?

Is it not enough - that it is bruising and hurting people badly?

Safety is important!

😃😃 my son and I went on that steeple chase and we were hanging on for dear life!! I have been riding horses since I was 4 and my son is a professional polo player!! We nearly came off several times 😂we are going back there next weekend

@yesornothatisthequestion It wasnt the coaster in the dark was it in the 90s? We went from uni and as our car rolled in, lots of ride operators pulled us out quickly. Next car seconds behind.
The next day two cars actually crashed.

Cat and mouse was scary. Never went on it, watched too many people nearly break their necks.

@mnahmnah frontierland at morecambe is bulldozed and long gone. Their cat and mouse ride was amazing!

From people's descriptions I think it was cat and mouse! The being whipped round corners just as you thought you were going to zoom off the track sounds exactly like the right we crashed on. It was horrific.
