Blackpool pleasure beach

I just visited Blackpool and I Had a nice time going around the beach and activities.

But honestly- Blackpool pleasure beach - what are they thinking! Some of the rides are so old and dangerous, I don't know how they are allowed at all.

It was the first time that I went .

I went on one ride, and it went extremely high. It was like an old fashioned rollrr coaster, but you were sitting on a horse. It's called steeple chase.

. There was the tiniest old fashioned seat belt on the horse, like a car seat belt. Except it was just a horizontal belt. The material of the belt looked old, worn and thin. And it didn't hold you on properly.

You had to grip with your hands onto the handle bars. This ride went extremely high and it was extremely fast and jerky, and i was nearly jerked out of the seat several times. If the ride jerked and you fell out of the seat , you would slip through the seat belt and you would fall a very long way down. I was holding on for dear life. I very nearly came off and fell once.

People were getting off the ride at the end and were crying and looking extremely stressed.

The guy running the ride laughed and said to us "you won't do that ride again in a hurry will you haha". Because he knew it was bad

I saw other rides in the park, where the metal holding the ride up looked completely rusted through.

I don't know how the park is allowed from a health and safety standpoint?

What kind of ride was cat and mouse?

It was like a wooden roller coaster that went quite quick with ridiculously tight corners to try and mimic a mouse running from a cat!

What kind of ride was cat and mouse?

You basically sat in a tiny wooden bucket on castor wheels and went onto a flat board high up. You hurtled along to the edge of the board. Then quickly whipped round at a right angle just as you thought you would go over the edge. The whole thing was on stilts and so rickety! Felt like the whole thing would collapse.

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 21:49

Im still shook after steeple chase.

I see online that it was opened in 1977.

Doesn't look like it's been updated in any way at all since then!

As for Cat and Mouse. I think that was Wild Mouse when I used to go - unless that is a different ride too! Grin

And holy shit, it jarred your neck and back! Awful. I can't believe some of these pre-historic rides are still going!!!

I guess if they pass safety checks though........?

The Big One/Pepsi Max is a corker! Only went on it once. That was enough!

Actually, daughter just back from there with a friend and also complained about that particular ride, said it was very uncomfortable and sore and they nearly fell off several times.

I mean they really should shut it down or ar least improve the safety harness on it

I don't know how steeple chase passes through any safety checks.

All of the other rides there had modern safety harnesses.

Steeplechase has a thin material belt that does nothing!

I don’t know why anyone goes on the rides there. There’s no way they’re properly maintained. A woman fell 30ft through a hole in the pier in the summer.

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 12/10/2024 21:52

Oh god steeple chase terrified me as a kid. I can still remember holding on for my life.

Gawdimold · 12/10/2024 21:52

m backside was black and blue after going on that

SabreIsMyFave · 12/10/2024 21:52

It does make you wonder doesn't it, how they pass the safety checks!

Squeezetheday · 12/10/2024 21:53

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 21:47

I can report that it's definitely still there!

Edited

I’m actually shocked it’s still there!! Not been for about 25 years but I cannot believe that’s still deemed safe

They're really shocking.

I saw the steeple chase ride from a distance, and I thought "oh that looks like a nice gentle horse ride".

I got the shock of my life when I got on it!

Grin Ah ha, yes! The one where you need physiotherapy, and lumbar decompression surgery after it! 😆

Yeah I had a bruise too.

And I'm an adult woman. They were letting young teenagers on it.

Perfect description of Cat and Mouse! It's practically Medieval! Shock

zubaspal · 12/10/2024 21:56

I remember going on that must have been 1995 ish came off it in tears.
The kids asked to go on it a few years ago, no way!
God knows how it's still there.

I definitely won't be going on them again! I mean their health and safety standards look way behind the times.

Who's checking them aswell? Surely someone should be checking them

That ride was shit scary in 2000 can't believe it's still up and running

It was scary in 1976 when I did it on a school trip.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/10/2024 21:57

@yesornothatisthequestion It wasnt the coaster in the dark was it in the 90s? We went from uni and as our car rolled in, lots of ride operators pulled us out quickly. Next car seconds behind.
The next day two cars actually crashed.

Cat and mouse was scary. Never went on it, watched too many people nearly break their necks.

@mnahmnah frontierland at morecambe is bulldozed and long gone. Their cat and mouse ride was amazing!

Rantypanties · 12/10/2024 22:00

You can see the Steeple chase in action before you get on it so it shouldn’t be a surprise to find it’s a lap belt when you get on. I haven’t heard of any injury/accident on it, certainly not in recent times, and yet that horrific accident happened on the Smiler at Alton Towers not so long ago so old ride doesn’t mean it’s unsafe.

The Wild Mouse at Blackpool was dismantled 6-7 years ago.

Well you can't see a lap belt from a distance can you?

When I went to get on - I was at the back of a long queue to get on, I definitely couldn't see what the seatbelt looked like.

I also thought that rides were subject to safety tests, but when I sat on that ride, the seatbelt definitely didn't keep me in place. And the ride jerks extremely roughly.

It is very high up, and it is a very long fall if you fall.

At the height it goes to, they should have much more than the seatbelt that they have on it

I don't know how it's allowed to run.

We live in Lytham which is quite close and I’ve driven around the back of the pleasure beach where you can see right underneath the far side of the big one. That thing is rusty and rickety plus huge. There’s no way people are inspecting every inch of that. It looks like a death trap.
