to be disappointed in this newborn present?

Friends of ours had their 1st baby a couple of months ago around the same time we had our 3rd baby.

Because it was their first child, I put great effort in buying them an amazing gift. I spent well over 100 pounds and put gifts in the box for the baby as well as the new mom and dad (think of nice tea, hot chocolate and soap and glory stuff for her)

I didn't expect them to reciprocate this, I know not everyone has the money available to spend so much time on a gift.

However, when they came over, she gave
me a bag from Shein. When I opened it it had the most disgusting plastic polyester smell. It contained a pink towel and a pink body suit for my baby girl that were made out of really cheap polyester material.

It smelled so bad that I threw it away after they had left.

My sister is due to have her 3rd child at the end of November. She already has a lot, but I bought her some nice socks, body suits and trousers for the baby from Asda (George). The stuff is really lovely and was inexpensive.

So I know that nice baby clothes don't have to cost a lot at all.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed that they made 0 effort when choosing their present?

I bought stuff from SHEIN before. I looked at the photos, thought it looked really nice and …. When I received it, it was cheap polyester crap with a real weird smell to it.

So maybe she went online and for the first time bought something from there (and got bitten)

fitzwilliamdarcy · 12/10/2024 20:12

Do you genuinely expect £100 to be spent on each of your babies, OP?

I ask because I’ve a colleague who’s having a 4th baby shower and is complaining that people seem “off” when she offers them her registry. I feel like the two of you would get along.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/10/2024 20:12

Shein is crap. But, what would your post have been if there was no gift at all? 🤔

DodoTired · 12/10/2024 20:13

Better not to bring anything than to bring tat from Shein 🤷‍♀️

BarbaraHoward · 12/10/2024 20:15

They got you a gift. You didn't like it, but they chose something and made the effort. It's really meanspirited to judge the quality of their gift like this.

Blarn · 12/10/2024 20:18

I don't buy from Shein, I don't wear it ether but if someone gave me a gift I would say thank you, be grateful they thought about me and pop it in a charity shop when I had time. After I had my first dc I found everything very overwhelming and definitely wouldn't have had the headspace to put together an elaborate gift. They got you a gift, that's a nice thing to do.

Mumistiredzzzz · 12/10/2024 20:19

But they didn't make 0 effort did they? Assuming it wasn't regifted, they went to the effort to choose and buy something, spending money for your baby. You don't like it, and that's ok, but you sound like an awful snob.

mysticalgardens · 12/10/2024 20:19

I can completely understand if people say that I should be grateful and that it is the thought that counts.

But some people seem to lack reading comprehension. I think I made it perfectly clear in my post that I didn't expect an expensive present at all.

I chose to spend over 100 £ and of course I didn't expect them to spend so much on my baby.

Just not some bad-smelling polyester stuff from SHEIN. I would never put this on a baby.

I can’t believe anyone thinks you’re being unreasonable. Shein is disgusting - awful for the environment and sweat shop site.

I’d rather get nothing than add to the landfill with that crap!

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 12/10/2024 20:21

We actually have reading comprehension that goes beyond a five-year-old's and can make inferences. It's abundantly clear you wanted a more expensive present and you're preoccupied with monetary value.

Starlightstarbright3 · 12/10/2024 20:21

Mum has baby two months ago . Buying gifts is not top of her list . Shein didn’t even mean leaving the house . It may have looked lovely on the picture

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 12/10/2024 20:22

well…… I have never had a baby, but lots of my friends have , the first few you go a bit over the top with gifts, then (depending on how many friends, I guess) you have to scale back, I once went to a dinner party of one group, where parents were discussing shit new parents gifts, that is where I decided bollocks to them all. Surely having the baby is their greatest gift, it is usually the pfb lot tbh.

Procrastinates · 12/10/2024 20:22

The trouble is your words and your actions don't match. If it wasn't actually about the value of the gift you wouldn't have mentioned how much you spent on their gift. The fact you're still obviously holding some sort of grudge about this months later is quite honestly ridiculous.

Please. She could get stuff from Amazon without leaving the house and it has lot of better options there

Nell1974 · 12/10/2024 20:23

Aren't you a delight? You just chucked it in the bin, adding to landfill, when it could have gone to a charity shop, where someone might have found it quite delightful. You sound grabby, snobby and unpleasant. You don't give to receive for a start. Also did you ask the new mum if she actually liked Soap & Glory products? She might have been horrified.

Worriedmummy2400 · 12/10/2024 20:25

Bet it was something g they got given that they wanted rid of.

5128gap · 12/10/2024 20:26

I'm shocked she handed you the gift in the plastic zip loc bag shein stuff comes in. Can't imagine anyone doing that.

Weverunoutofteabags · 12/10/2024 20:26

"I didn't expect them to reciprocate this, I know not everyone has the money available to spend so much time on a gift".

Why are you complaining then? Surely you should be grateful they got you something. Do you know their exact earnings/outgoings? By that I don't mean what they've told you, I mean have you seen payslips? If not you have no idea their truthful situation. Maybe they tried to do something nice with what they had available and you've thrown their gift in the bin.

ThePerkyDuck · 12/10/2024 20:27

AutumnCrow · 12/10/2024 19:53

Maybe it was something they were given themselves and wanted shot of.

I wouldn't have binned it though - we have in our town a baby bank, food bank, community cupboard, for example. I know Shein is crap in all sorts of ways, though, so I wouldn't blame you for feeling a bit disappointed that they might have thought you'd like or appreciate it. Being honest, I know that I wouldn't.

I think it’s good that OP got rid of the Shein stuff, considering an article I’ve read not too long ago about an investigation where they found traces of lead in children’s jacket.

GiantHornets · 12/10/2024 20:27

I wouldn’t have welcomed your gift either - nice tea, hot chocolate, soap & glory? All unnecessary when I have tea and soap already.
Too much consumerism and present exchanging going on

You are a delight. Taking a disgusting quality Shein outfit to a charity shop so someone can put this on their baby?? Are you insane?

Chromey · 12/10/2024 20:31

Honestly I wouldn't expect anything for a third baby - maybe a congratulations card but not a gift. I think it's only for first babies isn't it?

Mumwithbaggage · 12/10/2024 20:31

Your present to them wouldn't be my cup of tea. Soap and Glory is what my 14yo dcs loved years ago. I have tea I choose. Hot chocolate?? Why?? Bit generic and suggests you just bought stuff rather than being personal and specific. Just as you didn't like what they got you. Such is life - move on! Presents are a minefield. Think you need to get over yourself.

Waffle19 · 12/10/2024 20:32

YABVU! You don’t give gifts to get gifts. It was your choice to spend that sort of money. She’s a new mum, and yet she still thought to send you a gift.

BarbaraHoward · 12/10/2024 20:32

Sometimes people get gifts wrong. I guarantee you've given a gift in the past that has made the recipient think wtf.

They picked something for your baby and gave you a gift. That was lovely of them.

You didn't like physical gift (I wouldn't either), but they still did a lovely thing.

You're judging new parents who've just had a bomb taken to their lives and they still found the time to get you a gift. They probably thought it looked lovely online and then credited you with more generosity than you're showing.
