A duvet that never has a cover on

Is this weird?

Buying a duvet from Primark etc and not buying a duvet cover, just using this duvet as it is?

Anyone do this?

Not great, within a few days it’ll stink.

Grammarnut · 07/10/2024 18:28

Sheet under it? That would be ok. Otherwise a bit odd, but maybe not able to afford a cover?

juless77 · 07/10/2024 18:40

cover-less duvet all the way for me no changing the duvet and faffing putting it back on every week Its a total bug bear of mine plus it doesn't take long to dry at all its one of my top ten things I couldn't live without

deeahgwitch · 06/10/2024 18:09

You have a bottom sheet on the mattress which you lie on and then between you and the actual duvet you put another sheet.
It saves washing duvet covers and a sheet is less faff to replace than a duvet cover.

This.

I always do it with guests, then I don't have to wash the duvet cover each time. Don't struggle changing the cover, the wash is lighter.
I had one guest (hot blooded) who'd throw the duvet off anyway. If I didn't have a top sheet, just duvet, he'd take the duvet out and use the cover as a sheet. That's why I evolved the system.

Misseditagain · 07/10/2024 18:58

I love my crisp white bedding sheets.

MarvellousMonsters · 07/10/2024 19:16

Ohjustbuggeroff · 06/10/2024 19:27

It isn’t washed, just replaced fairly regularly with a new one

Not only is that gross it's incredibly wasteful. Why are people still treating things as 'disposable' it's clogging landfill.

This is like my coverless duvet

https://www.finebedding.co.uk/products/night-lark-linen-print-coverless-duvet

Apparently made from
100% Smartfil® Polyester from Recycled PET Bottles.

God knows what a PET bottle is….Grin

I can't imagine how sweaty I would be sleeping under that.
All my nightwear is cotton or linen and my bedding as well.
I think I've seen those in hotels and it was awful ,totally unable to sleep .
I have a 2 minute routine to make up my bed the inside out method so will continue and sleep in my lovely cool bed!

Express wash on my washer dryer is 15 minutes. So it is washed and dried in 15 minutes. I then take it out and air it but it is dry and useable.

I only got it a couple weeks ago but love it. It’s same as washing a duvet cover except I don’t have to take it off and on and the whole thing is washed and dried. I love it.

For the sake of full disclosure and in the interests of research I put my swim stuff in and properly timed it there now. 30 min end to end! I’d never really timed it before.

So I will now wash my coverless duvet ever 2 weeks not 1 and wash my swim stuff every 2 days 😂

Figment69 · 07/10/2024 19:46

I have coverless duvets on all beds. They go in the washing machine, weekly and they air dry. On the line during good days but still dry on an airer indoors when raining and usually dried within two hours. They come in different togs and roll up as small as a sleeping bag which is great for storage or travelling.

SillyOldBucket · 07/10/2024 20:25

No. If its a regular duvet, i would always have a cover otherwise it would just get dirty and a double duvet doesn't fit in my washing machine. The only time I might make an exception is if I have washed the cover and forget to put a clean one on and am just too tired by the time I go up to bed .

CandidHedgehog · 07/10/2024 20:36

Am I missing something or is a ‘coverless duvet’ just a rebranded eiderdown?

I’m just old enough to remember when we all gave them up for newfangled duvets (just wash the duvet cover! No need to wash the whole thing!).

Apparently we are now back to an all in one (just wash the whole thing! No need to spend time putting a duvet cover back on!)

vickylou78 · 07/10/2024 20:47

I guess would be ok if you had a flat sheet underneath it but if not, without a cover you'd be washing it weekly all the time and it'll fall apart and go all bunched up!

Yes eiderdown or in America is called a comforter. They do seem to use flat sheets underneath them too like you would with an eiderdown

I have two of these for my elderly mum who is bladder incontinent. They wash beautifully and tumble dry in about 90 minutes ready to go back on the bed. In case anyone is wondering about how robust they are, mum’s are in the wash nearly every other day and they’re both about two years old. Look as good now as they did when I bought them.

I have a coverless duvet - it’s nothing like an eiderdown. Same size as a duvet, washable and tumble dries.

@OptimisticMermaid
I just looked at the specs of your machine. It says WASHES in 15 mins washes and dries in 35 minutes

Come on. Seriously!! People are asking about a product and how to care for it. Sone he comes on and says it washes and dryers in 15 mins total. This is just rubbish. And unhelpful

That … pretty much describes most eiderdowns?

TicTac80 · 07/10/2024 22:02

I've got a wool duvet (very thin, but bloody heavy and warm). I've recently started to use it without a cover (it looks nice enough to do this - looks a bit like a traditional eiderdown), but I have a flat sheet underneath it and a thin blanket over. I just wash the flat sheet and the thin blanket each week, along with the fitted sheet and pillow cases. The wool duvet itself gets aired regularly and is washed every 6 months on a wool cycle (I have to time it right as it's kingsize and needs to be hung out to dry).

It’s magic! 😂But yes. It was 30 mins not 15. Still quite impressive.

Anyone do this?

Is it practical?

Wouldn't they cost more energy to dry, even supposing they are washing machine and dryer size?

GrannyRose15 · 08/10/2024 00:37

Put a sheet under the cover. It’s even easier to wash a sheet than a duvet cover.

HughGrantsfurrysquirrel · 08/10/2024 00:49

Im one of the few (obviously weird) people out there who hate duvet covers!! They look lovely when on, but i'm a terrible restless sleeper, with RLS, Sleep Apnoea and God knows... The last thing i need is to get tangled up in an irritating duvet cover!!
Thankfully now you can buy them with sewn on covers!!
