A duvet that never has a cover on

Is this weird?

Buying a duvet from Primark etc and not buying a duvet cover, just using this duvet as it is?

Anyone do this?

What do people mean by using a sheet underneath? A sheet on the bed?

Sheet on the bed that you lie on , then another sheet, then the duvet.

This is what I have , but my duvet cover also has a cover.

Changed the bed linen this afternoon, really looking forward to bedtime! Love clean sheets. apparently Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis used to have clean sheets every day, and if she had a little nap after lunch the sheets would be changed again. Almost worth marrying a wrinkly old millionaire for that alone.

i remember back in the 1980s when duvets first became popular in UK they had lovely nylon covers on them you just bunged the whole thing in the washing machine i hope todays coverless duvets have better material than they did then

I have 2 coverless duvets- a lighter one and a warmer one, they're great, really nice material and they dry really quick. I was them more than I washed my duvet covers because they dry quick.

CandidHedgehog · 06/10/2024 20:44

I never put a cover on my duvet because I like a feather duvet and I find all the filling ends up down the bottom of the duvet cover. However, I use a top sheet and then use the duvet cover as a bedspread so I don’t think it’s unhygienic.

Unless I planned to wash the duvet as often as I do the sheets, I wouldn’t have it touching skin, though.

dogmandu · 06/10/2024 20:46

I use a sheet underneath

I thought the whole point of a duvet is that is falls around you trapping the warm air. A sheet would stop this.

I live on the continent and have never seen a sheet used under a duvet.

2921j2 · 06/10/2024 20:46

OP I don't really understand why you wouldn't have a duvet cover. Even students do.

If you don't have a duvet cover, then the duvet will not be protected from sweat or whatever and will get smelly.

If it's a question of money, it's false economy not to have a duvet cover.

No. That's gross. Both a gross waste of resources and gross to sleep in without washing.

There was a lengthy thread on this at one point. Lots of people in the UK do use a sheet, lots don’t.

Also, of course the sheet doesn’t prevent the duvet (particularly a feather duvet) conforming to your body - sheets are made out of soft material (just like the material of the duvet itself surrounds the filling) and the top sheet conforms to your body with the weight of the duvet.

What on earth are people doing to the sheets you’ve seen that you apparently think they are rigid to the point warm air isn’t trapped?

JoBrandsCleaner · 06/10/2024 20:58

Well, my daughter was using a duvet without a cover on (when we finally managed to get into her flat to sort it out) but she’s schizophrenic

How regular though? Most people change their bedsheets every 1-2 weeks I'd say, or once a month at a minimum.

Yes, what you're doing is very unusual, but I'm interested in why you do it? Is it that you like the feel of it?

Dottiespotty · 06/10/2024 21:08

it would need washing every 1-2 weeks.

That's disgusting

I am no hygiene freak, quite the reverse, but christ the waste! Duvets should last years, not weeks, and unless you are using a top sheet then you can't sleep under an unwashed duvet with no cover for months.

biglipslittlehips · 06/10/2024 21:14

People seem confused by these. They are like old school blankets. They are used with a flat sheet underneath just as you would when using blankets.

Wool Blankets are washed a couple of times a year. Coverless duvets are supposed to be washed every couple of months. The sheets washed weekly just like a duvet cover would be

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/10/2024 21:18

Who wants to be washing duvets every week? I’d never fit a big enough one in my machine anyway.

AgileGreenSeal · 06/10/2024 21:18

PayYourselfFirst · 06/10/2024 17:00

I don't really understand coverless duvets
Why would you want to wash the whole thing every week?
It must take ages to dry.
Duvet cover is thin and dries much quicker

Bed-wetting.

ForGreyKoala · 06/10/2024 21:18

deeahgwitch · 06/10/2024 18:09

You have a bottom sheet on the mattress which you lie on and then between you and the actual duvet you put another sheet.
It saves washing duvet covers and a sheet is less faff to replace than a duvet cover.

That's fairly normal where I live - not the UK. Most sheets are sold in pairs. I really don't understand why anyone would want to be constantly taking off a duvet cover to wash it.

I got a coverless duvet off amazon last week. Put it in the washer dryer this weekend (didn’t really need it but anyway). 15 min express wash and dry and it came out washed and dried. In 15 mins! 😀put some fabric conditioner in as well and it smells and feels lovely. Learned about them on MN 😀

I actually saw that advice televised many years before that. It was Nerys Hughes who demonstrated it. I’ve followed it ever since.

I remember it on the Generation Game with Bruce Forsyth too. Heaven knows when that was. 1970s or 1980s?

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 06/10/2024 21:25

MayaPinion · 06/10/2024 17:01

Is it a coverless one? There are some excellent ones that can be thrown in the washing machine and dried easily like these (I covet one)

www.finebedding.co.uk/products/night-lark-linen-print-coverless-duvet?variant=39791832760382

If so, carry on. If it's a regular duvet they're not designed to be washed and dried easily and would likely get fairly gross fairly quickly. Read the laundry instructions carefully.

This would make me sweaty as all hell. I need bedding made of natural fibres, not to sleep under a recycled plastic bottle!

Teddyjumper · 06/10/2024 21:35

If it fits in your washing machine, and you wash it when you wash the rest of your bedding, why would it be a problem?

MadKittenWoman · 06/10/2024 21:37

Keroppi · 06/10/2024 20:15

What? Duvet cover inside out, grab and shake. Shake it over bannister for even less exertion
I'm 5 foot 0. Never had any issues with my short arms Hmm
A normal duvet with no cover on is gross and seems like a sensory nightmare. Buy a coverless and raise your bedding standards lol

I'm 4' 9" and can change a king size duvet cover by myself no problem.

OptimisticMermaid · 06/10/2024 21:39

I definitely recommend coverless duvets. I like that it is all in one and you don’t have a duvet riding down in the duvet cover. I have a standard washer dryer but this coverless duvet fits in it and it’s so easy to shove it in and 15 mins later it’s washed and dried. I know everyone likes different things though.
