A duvet that never has a cover on

Is this weird?

Buying a duvet from Primark etc and not buying a duvet cover, just using this duvet as it is?

Anyone do this?

@CandidHedgehog
What on earth are people doing to the sheets you’ve seen that you apparently think they are rigid to the point warm air isn’t trapped?
If the sheet is tucked in then it's rigid isn't it?

Who tucks in a top sheet? 🤔

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/10/2024 23:08

I'm surprised how quickly people are saying the cover less duvets take to wash and dry - they sound pretty good .

Last time I tried to wash a duvet I couldn't even get a single one in the washer.

It's not such a waste if op donates the used duvets to a homeless shelter or animal rescue centre.

No one round here accepts bedding, charity shops, shelters, dog & cat home.

Grim to sleep under all that plastic then just chuck it and replace, so wasteful.

WinterFaye2 · 06/10/2024 23:22

I did this once in the midst of 2 children under 2. I’d managed to wash the bedding but lost the will to live after putting the bottom sheet and pillowcases back on. So the duvet was cover less, just totally not for me. It felt weird and unclean.

It’s maybe just me. And this particular coverless duvet. And my particular washer dryer. But I will stick it in there every Saturday morning for 15 minutes and it is washed and dried. I am very happy with it.

Copperoliverbear · 06/10/2024 23:48

You can buy cover less duvets in different colours and just wash them.

Definitely

So being short is an excuse for being terrible at housework now? Gosh people are pathetic. (I know it’s not the op saying that)
but really this sounds extremely wasteful and a bit ick, depending on how long between buying new ones.

HollyKnight · 07/10/2024 00:20

It's not about being terrible at housework. It's about cutting out a task because you can. We could all be taking our washing down to the river to beat against the rocks, but instead we use washing machines or laundrettes because it's easier.

I have 2 robot vacuums - one upstairs and one downstairs - so I don't have to vacuum daily myself. I also have a dishwasher because I can't be arsed washing dishes by hand. If I could find a way to get rid of the task of emptying the thing after I 100% would. I take my car to the carwash because I don't want to stand outside with a bucket and sponge. I buy clothes that don't need to be ironed because I can't be bothered ironing. I have a coverless duvet because I can't be bothered ironing and changing a duvet cover every week etc. etc.

Got better things to do with my time than housework.

I've got a light weight summer one that is designed to be used with no cover & really like it.
For some reason I never got round to using it this year.

Express wash on my washer dryer is 15 minutes. So it is washed and dried in 15 minutes. I then take it out and air it but it is dry and useable.

I only got it a couple weeks ago but love it. It’s same as washing a duvet cover except I don’t have to take it off and on and the whole thing is washed and dried. I love it.

You have a combo washer and dryer that will wash and dry a duvet in 15 minutes?

Combo washer dryers aren’t common here in Australia, but I did use a few of them on our recent trip to the UK and they were terrible. Seemed to wash ok, but the drying took hours and hours, even overnight. We usually still had to hang clothes as they were still damp.

If I could get one that did the whole process in 15 minutes I’d definitely buy one.

Clueless2024 · 07/10/2024 01:17

I am currently living overseas for 2 years. For context; rented furniture, so we didn't bring a lot with us from the mother land. One thing I did buy, was sheets, linen, duvets etc. I actually didn't worry about duvet covers. No-one has noticed, no-one cares. I am planning on shipping our duvets back to the mother land once this posting has finished, but it just seemed a waste of money. I did buy some throw blankets, to chuck over the duvets in winter. They add a pop of colour and kind of make up for the lack of a cover. But in normal circumstances I would always have a duvet cover

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2024 02:01

I used a coverless one with a sheet under. Sheets get washed weekly, the duvet gets washed when it needs doing.

What brand washer dryer is this? Model?

superstar63 · 07/10/2024 07:47

I would love a coverless duvet but need a king size and only have a 7kg washing machine which apparently is too small.

Maybe a summer weight one would fit but not a 10.5 tog. I even thought if a summer weight would fit I could get two and use on top of each other but they would probably slide off?

CatherinedeBourgh · 07/10/2024 07:55

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 06/10/2024 17:01

Is it because you don’t like the faff on putting the cover back on?

Partly, although I'm not usually the one who makes the bed so that's not such a big deal, I also find they never quite fit right and I have bits of cover without a duvet which are annoying. I find it easier to rearrange things if I just have a sheet and a cover.

She can't be bothered to wash them, so she's not going to be doing that. Your point about donation is a good one though.

We have a recycling centre that's just like a massive jumble sale (it's community run) and they do donate bedding to a homeless charity in our nearby city.

deeahgwitch · 07/10/2024 09:00

I too would like to know what washing machine washes and dries stuff in 15 minutes please @OptimisticMermaid.

The quickest wash on my washing machine is 20 minutes and then I'd have to dry the duvet.

TeaAndCakeFTW · 07/10/2024 09:10

Isn't having appropriate bedding one of social services criteria of neglect? So, I'd say yes, using duvet covers do matter.

I'm slovenly as fuck and even I couldn't sleep in a bed without a sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases. Part from being uncomfortable it makes me think of something out of trainspotting.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/10/2024 09:49

@TeaAndCakeFTW the neglect would only apply to children or a vulnerable adult in your care. So if an adult chooses to sleep in a duvet with no cover - that would be up to them . Although I agree with all the comments about this being grim and wasteful . It sounds like the cover less washable duvets would suit the OP.

Anyotherdude · 07/10/2024 09:54

Unusual, but not weird. I would assume that it had been bought as a blanket substitute - so the bed would be made with a bottom and top sheet, then the duvet would be on top of the top sheet with a bedspread over the top.
That would be a great substitute if the person likes tucked-in bedding, but not the weight of several blankets…
