A duvet that never has a cover on

Is this weird?

Buying a duvet from Primark etc and not buying a duvet cover, just using this duvet as it is?

Anyone do this?

When I was growing up in Canada a lot of working class friends had “branded” (disney or whatever) coverless duvets. They were not washed often and the fabric was disgusting. I guess it’s hygenic if you wash it every week or 2 but still disgusts me. My kids’ potty training has taught me that a tein duvet cover will stay on through the wash cycle but the queen will bunch up. (It isn’t the goal, just a result of throwing it all in the wash half asleep and being surprised at the results)

So when people are claiming they dry quickly they are talking about it in a tumble drier?

Ohjustbuggeroff · 06/10/2024 22:11

@RoaryLion1 No, it’s a nice house, fully furnished of course 🤷🏻‍♀️

I use duvets with no cover on, and it does look odd, but it means I can wash them much more often in the washing machine, without all the faff of putting the covers back on. So they are actually much cleaner than they would be if they had covers.

The are the summer ones and they fit easily in the washing machine. I wash them on 40C with bio liquid and dry them in the tumble dryer.

It feels slightly like sleeping in a cloud because they are so white.

@CandidHedgehog
What on earth are people doing to the sheets you’ve seen that you apparently think they are rigid to the point warm air isn’t trapped?
If the sheet is tucked in then it's rigid isn't it?

Washer dryer in my case.

coffeeneeded · 06/10/2024 22:13

I love our coverless duvets.

I dry them in the tumble but they dry in a day hanging on the banister too.

I've just bought cheap ones for the kids from the Online Home Store and they seem to be brilliant too.

do you also bin your socks after one wear?

sesquipedalian · 06/10/2024 22:14

As the Queen of household linens, I couldn’t contemplate a duvet without a cover, and I do have quite a few of them. I’ve lent duvets to friends at Christmas, and I always send them complete with covers. The idea of a cover-less duvet just doesn’t compute!

Ohjustbuggeroff · 06/10/2024 22:14

@Bruisername Just feels a lot softer and more comfortable I think 🤷🏻‍♀️My Dd always has a cover on matching her room decor.
It doesn’t get dirty or smelly

OP posts:
Bruisername · 06/10/2024 22:15

Do you just put them on with the general rubbish? I just can’t get over the amount of plastic you would get through!!

perhaps invest in the cover less washable ones

Washer dryer in my case.

So a tumble dryer then at the time you are drying them, its acting as a tumble dryer

So why is it 'quicker' than drying the covers as claimed by many on here?

Express wash on my washer dryer is 15 minutes. So it is washed and dried in 15 minutes. I then take it out and air it but it is dry and useable.

I only got it a couple weeks ago but love it. It’s same as washing a duvet cover except I don’t have to take it off and on and the whole thing is washed and dried. I love it.

Ffs I hate threads like these… one sentence answers from the OP.
Just get to the point of why you started the thread in the first place.

They just hold less water in the fabric than a duvet cover. Our coverless (single) duvet will dry in the tumble dryer much more quickly than a (single) duvet cover does. Or can hang it up and again it’s dry in about half the time of a cover.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/10/2024 22:23

I think it gives squat vibes.

The coverless duvets you can get are passable though. But no way would I have a regular duvet on the bed with no duvet cover.

Ohjustbuggeroff · 06/10/2024 22:26

@youngestisapsycho Because I only just really thought about it and wondered if anyone else did similar. Just don’t read it you hate the thread so much, it’s ok.

Op I think consider coverless duvets. Might be better option.

youngestisapsycho · 06/10/2024 22:31

Well I read it to see your answer, but one never came. You never once said it was you using the duvet like that or why?

Ohjustbuggeroff · 06/10/2024 22:34

@youngestisapsycho I said above…relax, it wasn’t meant to make people angry, sorry.

The OP is short. I'm short. That means we have shorter arms than average people. It's incredibly difficult for us to do certain things other people take for granted, such as changing a duvet cover.

You've just made that up about OP being short!

No, most people don’t have sheets that stay army barracks taut all night.

I supposed it might be possible if you starch them but why on earth would anyone do that?

Cover less duvets still take more washing and drying than sheets whatever people are saying, it's just physics. It's wasteful to replace duvets frequently, though I share everyone's pain at changing the covers, I hate doing it.

Bananalanacake · 06/10/2024 22:51

It's not such a waste if op donates the used duvets to a homeless shelter or animal rescue centre.
