Really upset with family’s reaction

I have recently won my pip mandatory reconsideration for both PMDD and ADHD. Also generalised anxiety and depression.
I am currently unable to work as I’m not well enough.

I’m really upset as my parents and my brother think I’m taking the piss with getting pip it seems. My brother called it a ‘pisstake’ when he found out and my mum thinks that he’s right to feel that way as he’s working a full week and in her words I’m “sitting about at home, getting free money”
I’m feeling really down about it, as I thought they’d be pleased for me. It’s taken a lot of strength to get through the assessment processes and the stress of it made me feel very ill at times.

I’m now starting to question the decision and I feel like a bit of a fraud or something.

OP posts:

I did wonder how long it would take before the mean comments started. If the op has been awarded Pip then it’s not for anyone to judge. Congratulations op, and I hope it helps you enjoy your life better. Unfortunately, you would be better off not telling anyone because you will be judged by people who don't know you and have no clue what your life is like.

Absolutely agree. Whenever I comment on MN I always take the OP comments at face value. I've never needed pip or had to deal with a chronic health problem, so I can only accept the word from those who do. I'm sure that some people with similar conditions are able to cope in different ways, but that's irrelevant if the OP says she can't and needs pip.

Her issue is with unkind and unsupportive family, and that's what we're supposed to be addressing here. How on earth is piling the responsibilities of the country's economy and social care bill on her shoulders appropriate here? Honestly those people need to be on another forum if they want to discuss that.

Freeyourminds · 06/10/2024 12:09

That’s just hearsay, there’s no proof on an anonymous forum, that you are actually a GP.
By saying you’re a GP, it’s like you’re validating your comment. If you are actually a GP, it’s so wrong that you’re judging patients (that’s not part of someone’s job, whose working within social care, the nhs)
Like people with mental health conditions, hidden conditions, which aren’t always visible, haven’t got enough to contend with, the people who are supposed to be, supporting them, are not staying neutral, being prejudicial

I’m a GP, and a human being, and I can assure you all doctors have opinions on patients, or “judge” them, if you choose to use that word. We still treat them equally. But we can’t help having opinions.
And as for proving people on forums are what they say they are, of course that isn’t possible. OP could have made the whole thing up. She might be a male multi millionaire premier league footballer for all we know!

I am a GP. Obviously I can’t prove it without giving away my name, which I’m not going to do. But I am a GP. The remark about being paid is something I have heard from patients and also a family member. Why would you think patients wouldn’t say that to me? Patients talk about anything and everything, and finances are a very common topic of conversation.

I believe your a gp by how judgemental you are

Anyone who thinks GP's. Nurses, Dr's or anyone who works in healthcare, don't have opinions or make judgements, then you're very sorely mistaken.

We do judge and we do make comments

Is it right to judge, no of course, but can you all honestly say in your jobs, you don't judge anyone, honestly, can you?

I think people forget we are human.

No I don't judge anyone at work or in life why would I, I don't know their life, their story and I definitely don't think im better or above anyone so why would I judge them

I wouldn’t have told them. People get upset about it, and I can understand why. My DD gets it for anorexia-I haven’t told anyone as it’s human nature to be resentful.

It's selfish and narrow minded to be resentful not human nature.

Edda09 · 06/10/2024 17:43

Congratulations on getting through the assessment and being successful! I’m off sick with a chronic condition and have not managed to garner up the energy to attempt applying as it’s pretty brutal! For my condition, over 90% of applications are turned down first time and so those who have got it have been through appeal too. So don’t feel any guilt because as you’ve passed, it’s warranted!

Lanzarotelady · 06/10/2024 17:51

I'll ask again, has the OP ever worked?

No not at all, just very unprofessional. All information is supposed to be confidential, and the ‘professional’ is paid to be impartial.
It’s very strange to then go onto an anonymous forum, saying you’re a medical professional.

Lollypop25 · 06/10/2024 18:23

Do people only deserve social care and support if they have paid? So children? The disabled? They don't deserve the help as they've not paid in? I really hope you never find yourself or any of your loved ones in need of help.

The information is confidential. No one is spreading any information.

Do you think teachers talk about pupils and parents?
Bar staff about customers?
Retail staff about customers?
Hotel staff about customers?
Police Officers?
Staff in food banks?

It is human nature. Weather it is right or wrong it is human nature.

It's one thing to say it's human nature it's quite something else to be wearing it as some sort of badge of honour and repeatedly asking if OP has worked or not. Certain professions should be protected from people just like you.

Lanzarotelady · 06/10/2024 18:46

I have asked twice if the OP is working.

Hardly repeatedly.

I am not wearing any badge of honour, just pointing out the realities of working in Healthcare/SS.

Posters making out they don't judge make me laugh, we have all done it. Maybe I am just more honest than others.

Not honest no, heartless sure.
Definition of repeat: to say something you've already said.
OP quickly realised MN is full of more judgemental people like you and their family and won't be back, so who exactly youre asking that to/for is a mystery.

You’ve just corrected someone for making a spelling mistake, you’ve just done the same, weather, instead of whether. So no, l’m not interested or taking your comments seriously.
You’re just completely missing the point, working in a bar, or retail, is not comparable Claiming to be a medical professional, on an anonymous forum is just trying to justify a comment.

Lanzarotelady · 06/10/2024 19:02

Yes wrong use of whether, am also looking at holidays, my bad.

I am that bothered if you take my comments seriously or not, doesn't matter to me.

Tessiebear2023 · 06/10/2024 19:04

Jfc some of you guys need to re evaluate your lives, this is just pathetic. MN should remove all of these irrelevant posts.

Butnothingsclear · 06/10/2024 19:07

I am glad to hear you are going to get some therapy OP. Your mums response makes me wonder if your difficulties are, in some ways, linked to your early life. If she is this invalidating now I’m wondering how your emotions were received when you were little. You deserve the money so that you can heal and work on building yourself up. Good luck with that process.

ClaredeBear · 06/10/2024 19:08

That's horrible, I know id much rather be working than be on a lower income, staying at home all day. In other words, I'm really sorry your brother feels somehow marginalised by this and your mum is taking his side and ganging up on you. There's nothing. You can do to help them understand, sadly. I hope you can start to work through things and get to a place where you're feeling well enough to work.

It’s just a shame you didn’t take the same attitude, when you decided to correct someone else.
