AIBU to expect my husband to wear a... slightly impractical... halloween costume?

My whole family have Toy Story themed costumes for halloween this year, we always do a family theme for my neighbour's party

Last night was the big try-on and all was great except for my husband. His costume is a big inflatable Buzz Lightyear that he was really excited about. It's so funny on but his problem is that it all fastens up at the back and there's no way he can get in and out of it without my help 😂

I don't see the issue at all, I can help with bathroom trips and obviously get him out at the end but he was just mortified about being "trapped" last night 😄 He's also got some concern it's really big for fitting through doors and hard to sit down but the fact he can't do it himself is the biggest thing and he's just finding other excuses too

He'd rather mess up the whole family theme to avoid wearing it, but I think he should because it's fun and a minor thing. AIBU?

I don't particularly like it when anyone makes me wear anything that's uncomfortable.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/10/2024 12:39

I wouldn't wear something that I couldn't get out of/escape from by myself. Does it cover his head and face?

gannett · 02/10/2024 12:39

Shuddering at the thought of forced "fun" fancy dress that means I can't go to the loo by myself.

Obvious solution is that he wears this monstrosity when you arrive and for whatever photos you want taken, and changes into the clothing he wants to wear after 15 minutes or so.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 02/10/2024 12:40

At least he isn’t going as one of the aliens😅

Cynic17 · 02/10/2024 12:41

I hate any kind of fancy dress for adults. If I were your husband, I'd just opt out of the whole thing. You can't dictate what another adult wears, OP.

Somatic · 02/10/2024 12:41

What are you going as, OP? Can you swap with him so you’re Buzz?

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/10/2024 12:42

What an awful evening for him. Forced to wear something that he doesn't want to and can't even take a shit without help.

Zup · 02/10/2024 12:43

Yabu, if the theme is a must, just get a buzz T-shirt and white pants. But as an adult the thought of having to go find someone every time I need the loo and just being in the way/awkward through doorways is not a fun party.

InTheRainOnATrain · 02/10/2024 12:43

If he’s uncomfortable he won’t have fun which rather defeats the point doesn’t it?! The obvious solution is to buy another Buzz off amazon that isn’t inflatable that way the fam can stick with theme but no risk pisses himself or gets wedged in a doorway- win win.

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 02/10/2024 12:43

You wear the buzz suit and he can go as something else, then everyone's happy.

Mskrabapple · 02/10/2024 12:43

You’re coming off a little self absorbed here.
He can’t fit through doors, he can’t sit down comfortably, he can’t take himself to the bathroom independently and he can’t get it on or off by himself… and you genuinely can’t see the problem?

Besides the fact that whole family dress up themes are a tad twee, I’d think you should be appreciative that he’s willing to dress up in the theme and spend more effort fixing/adapting/getting a new costume so that he feels comfortable

This.

FetchezLaVache · 02/10/2024 12:45

You want him to attend a party dressed in something that prevents him from going to the loo or even sitting down?? Do you not like him very much, or something?

SunblockSue · 02/10/2024 12:45

The whole thing sounds dreadful.
No to a Halloween party
No to fancy dress

YouveGotAFastCar · 02/10/2024 12:48

It doesn't sound like this will be a fun thing for him if he's uncomfortable.

If you're happy with it, trade costumes.

If not, get him a more practical Buzz Lightyear costume.

WickedStepmotherWasJustMisunderstood · 02/10/2024 12:53

Halloween is a while away. You become buzz and swap your costume for something else Toy Story themed.

WideFootWelly · 02/10/2024 12:55

It kind of depends how long he has to wear it for. 1-2 hours, I'd grin and bear it. 5 hours, no.

How about a slightly less ridiculous costume underneath, so he can take the inflatable off and reveal he's actually the bad guy.

Have a rethink would you genuinely want to wear something like that just for a family theme

get another costume

PotatoWafflerWrites · 02/10/2024 12:57

Can't you wear his costume? What are you going as, could you swap?

KimPossible91 · 02/10/2024 12:59

Wow the people have spoken haha!

I'm going to try on Buzz Lightyear later but of course I need his help to do it 😂😂 I'd be happy enough wearing it and I also am pretty sure I could escape from it myself... to attempt later 😮

I'll need to get something else for him because my costume was a very ladies alien 🤣

Succinctly put.

TwistedWonder · 02/10/2024 12:59

I hate fancy dress and theme parties so I might be biased but I don’t get how him wearing an uncomfortable costume where he can’t even take a piss without help is ‘fun’ in any way shape or form.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/10/2024 13:01

I don’t think it’s a good idea for anyone to be wearing a costume that they can’t get in and out of for a party.

Can you not take it back and buy a more “ordinary” buzz costume?

booisbooming · 02/10/2024 13:02

You be Buzz if you like it so much! And if the poor guy agrees to be Woody or something then he's still doing more than most people would.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/10/2024 13:03

Get another costume. It's supposed to be fun.
