AIBU to expect my husband to wear a... slightly impractical... halloween costume?

My whole family have Toy Story themed costumes for halloween this year, we always do a family theme for my neighbour's party

Last night was the big try-on and all was great except for my husband. His costume is a big inflatable Buzz Lightyear that he was really excited about. It's so funny on but his problem is that it all fastens up at the back and there's no way he can get in and out of it without my help 😂

I don't see the issue at all, I can help with bathroom trips and obviously get him out at the end but he was just mortified about being "trapped" last night 😄 He's also got some concern it's really big for fitting through doors and hard to sit down but the fact he can't do it himself is the biggest thing and he's just finding other excuses too

He'd rather mess up the whole family theme to avoid wearing it, but I think he should because it's fun and a minor thing. AIBU?

But surely you dress up as something to do with halloween? Whether that be something 'scary', or something relating to a film about/featuring Halloween?

Since when did Halloween = any kind of random fancy dress?

Don’t know. We have gone to Florida about 8 times during Halloween. And they decorated their houses (where we were, no idea about other places) scary but seemed to dress up as random things. Many very, very creative though. But like I said, this is just where we went it might be different elsewhere. I liked it though!

yup but he has looked at it, said he does not want to wear it because reasons and that should be the end of it.

Yes, agree; it should be, but will it be? This shouldn't be a big deal, OP should b open to compromise in this situation; talk about killing the fun otherwise!

reallifeboogie · 02/10/2024 15:07

How is toy story related to Halloween?

MerryMarys · 02/10/2024 15:08

Am I missing something - what has Toy Story got to do with Halloween?

This! Halloween 👻 🎃 is about pumpkins and scary costumes.

TorroFerney · 02/10/2024 15:08

sundayagainagain · 02/10/2024 13:10

You could dress up as a crying with laughter emoji, OP.

I am a terrible person, that made me laugh more than it should have.

Singleandproud · 02/10/2024 15:10

He has the costume, wear it there. Spend 15 mins in it then take it off and have a buzz t shirt underneath. Others van have fun trying it on instead.

Not directly to your question, OP, but being American and all, I do love a good family themed Halloween costume coordination. In fact, the Halloween after the wedding of Wills and Kate, a neighboring family decided to dress as the British Royal Family, for which purpose they asked to borrow my Welsh Corgi.

Good luck, OP. I applaud your dedication.

We once did the famous five , no one dressed as Timmy though we took a toy one. But we just got old clothes from charity shops, very low key. Not for Halloween of course because like Toy Story famous five has no links to Halloween.

op bin liner and a witches hat is all you need oh and a swede of course.

Yes you are missing something. Halloween is when you kind of dress up, and it’s mostly here that people seem to think you have to dress up as something scary.

Well of course you do it’s Halloween it’s witches that’s the entire point.

I think feeling trapped and not wanting to need help going to the loo are good enough reasons to not be open to compromise.

Username12284949 · 02/10/2024 15:15

Swap it for a different buzz costume I'm sure there must be another one that isn't inflatable? A onesie or something.

MerryMarys · 02/10/2024 15:16

Halloween is when you kind of dress up, and it’s mostly here that people seem to think you have to dress up as something scary.

The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear scary costumes to ward off ghosts

Just get him a non stupid one 🤷‍♀️

Season 8 Episode 6 GIF by Friends

With a few very simple alterations to Spudnik he could go as Mr Potato Head

DoreenonTill8 · 02/10/2024 15:21

Exactly what @saltinesandcoffeecups put. If this is yours it's a whole world of difference from the inflatable Buzz Lightyear costume!

AIBU to expect my husband to wear a... slightly impractical... halloween costume?

I think feeling trapped and not wanting to need help going to the loo are good enough reasons to not be open to compromise.

Sorry, but my compromise was to wear the blasted ( but hilariously funny) costume to the party for everyone to appreciate, wear for an hour or less, before the refreshments kick in , a.k.a. as going to the loo 'with asstistance' which is proper ridiculous btw.

Then change out of it,before the inevitable call of nature, into a costume of simplicity if not outright hilarity.

One thing I didn't mention.
One Halloween my daughter picked up a similar costume at a thrift shop.

It was a blown up huge costume you were also trapped inside, like the Buzz LYear one.

My easy going DH wore it to our DD's party, but had to take it off soon after all the laughter died down, for obvious reasons.
It soon ended up back at a charity shop.

I still think it would be reasonable to just say nope, not wearing it.

BabyR · 02/10/2024 15:31

This sounds like forced fun to me.

Like I said before, way to ruin a fun night, insisting that the thing be worn when clearly it's not comfortable, embarrassing to have to have help with, plain ridiculous and you know what? Not as funny as either of them thought it would be to be causing this much hassle. Happy Halloween!

But surely you dress up as something to do with halloween? Whether that be something 'scary', or something relating to a film about/featuring Halloween?

No, not so much anymore since the major film companies/ production companies realized there was big money to be made from producing commercially manufactured costumes for adults and kid's parties. Also since people had media to see what costumes are being worn elsewhere in the world. The home made ghosts and witches are still being worn, but these days there's an infinite amount of choice out there commercially, and it's now more about one night that a person has to go all out and be something that they always wanted to be, rather than about dressing up to ward off spirits of the dead.
It's a really BIG thing these days, with adults, just as much as with kids.
More commercial costumes and accessories around for 6 weeks before Halloween, it rivals Xmas in global commercialism.

Yeah, but like I said, go to America where Halloween is a huge thing and you will see what people dress like.

What an awful evening for him. Forced to wear something that he doesn't want to and can't even take a shit without help.

This in reverse - Imagine the responses if DH had posted saying he thought his DW was being unreasonable because they didn’t want to wear the Buzz suit - instant grounds for divorce !

Autumnalfun · 03/10/2024 10:11

Wearing an inflatable buzz light year suit sounds heinous. No if not force my husband to do that. How uncomfortable

Edingril · 03/10/2024 10:11

The idea sounds terrible, why can't people wear what they want?

Growlybear83 · 03/10/2024 10:14

I'm a bit speechless by this thread. Do people really do this? 😮😮😮
