AIBU to expect my husband to wear a... slightly impractical... halloween costume?

My whole family have Toy Story themed costumes for halloween this year, we always do a family theme for my neighbour's party

Last night was the big try-on and all was great except for my husband. His costume is a big inflatable Buzz Lightyear that he was really excited about. It's so funny on but his problem is that it all fastens up at the back and there's no way he can get in and out of it without my help 😂

I don't see the issue at all, I can help with bathroom trips and obviously get him out at the end but he was just mortified about being "trapped" last night 😄 He's also got some concern it's really big for fitting through doors and hard to sit down but the fact he can't do it himself is the biggest thing and he's just finding other excuses too

He'd rather mess up the whole family theme to avoid wearing it, but I think he should because it's fun and a minor thing. AIBU?

If I were your DH, I would be quite happily staying at home.

FuckMiniBabybells · 02/10/2024 13:04

Can he wear it for an hour for pics, but put shorts and t shirt on underneath, fashion a box to wear on his head and he can be andy dressed as buzz for the rest of the night..

Wow the people have spoken haha!

I'm going to try on Buzz Lightyear later but of course I need his help to do it 😂😂 I'd be happy enough wearing it and I also am pretty sure I could escape from it myself... to attempt later 😮

I'll need to get something else for him because my costume was a very ladies alien 🤣

What’s a ladies alien? I thought they all looked the same, unisex? It’s been a while since I watched it though!

helgel · 02/10/2024 13:06

Buy him a big nappy and tell him to stop moaning.

Have to agree but then I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick than wear fancy dress

I mean a ladies costume of the Toy Story alien haha.. it's a dress. (a dress with a zip on the back that he had to help me with... kinda same scenario anyway 😂)

Why can he not go to the party wearing the costume for maybe for an hour before the refreshments kick in and you must accompany him to the toilet?
Everyone could have their laughs from the costume and then, maybe he can wear some more basic easy costume for the rest of the party?
Aside from the usual cracks from guests about how will he do anything 'practical', which sounds like will embarrass him, you all can enjoy the rest of the party?

sundayagainagain · 02/10/2024 13:10

You could dress up as a crying with laughter emoji, OP.

TheChosenTwo · 02/10/2024 13:10

omg I hate fancy dress and decline all invites
to any party with a fancy dress dress code!

your dh is being a good enough sport about this, just let him pick a costume he can go to the loo in. Do you have to go as the same theme, you say you always have but that doesn’t mean you have to forever.

Sia8899 · 02/10/2024 13:12

I also wouldn’t like a costume I couldn’t go to the toilet alone in.

You wear Buzz Lightyear, he wears the dress (which is the easiest item of clothing to go to the toilet in), all sorted!!

So you get to wear a dress but he has to wear a fucking massive inflatable?

Fuck. That. You wear the fucking thing

And I say that as someone who loves fancy dress. If he is happy to be Buzz get him a different costume

because HE DOES NOT WANT TO

colourfulchinadolls · 02/10/2024 13:14

If its no big deal then you can go as buzz.

I detest fancy dress abd would be very unimpressed if my DH (or anyone) tried to force me to participate.

Does he normally enjoy these fancy dress events or is it more your thing?

Waltdisnerd · 02/10/2024 13:15

If I wear him I'd wear it for an hour for some pics. It won't kill him

So would I. No way would I go to a party in a constricting costume like that.

JazzTheDog · 02/10/2024 13:17

Could he not just go as Andy? Jeans, T-shirt with a toy buzz or woody?

MerryMarys · 02/10/2024 13:21

The whole thing sounds dreadful.
No to a Halloween party
No to fancy dress

And a waste of money/resources!

dudsville · 02/10/2024 13:23

This isn't my kind of thing but I can see that you would all have a lot of fun, and I smiled when I read your post. It's a great idea to swap costumes (why can't he be a girl alien?) and talking about that would be part of the fun of the night. If not, you still have plenty of time to find something he can get in and out of.

sundayagainagain · 02/10/2024 13:24

I love watching people at the Halloween party at Disney World. It’s great.

But an inflatable costume is just unimaginative and very uncomfortable.
And £70 worth of plastic landfill.
And the aliens in the film are unisex and don’t even wear dresses.

Newbie887 · 02/10/2024 13:25

He can’t fit through doors and he can’t take a piss unless he comes and finds you, interrupts you talking / drinking / having fun, and you take him to the toilet 🤣 yes yabu!! I get it, I have adhd and when I start hyperfocusing on something then it’s hard to regain a sense of perspective. But this is too much 🤣

NagathaCrispy · 02/10/2024 13:30

The idea of going to Halloween party at all is my idea of total hell on earth, let alone one where you have to dress up!!! . If I were him I'd go down with Covid that evening and let you all go and make fools of yourselves without him. Poor guy!

CarolinaInTheMorning · 02/10/2024 13:33

Not directly to your question, OP, but being American and all, I do love a good family themed Halloween costume coordination. In fact, the Halloween after the wedding of Wills and Kate, a neighboring family decided to dress as the British Royal Family, for which purpose they asked to borrow my Welsh Corgi.

Good luck, OP. I applaud your dedication.

Whoyoutakingto · 02/10/2024 13:40

My 22 year old daughter would love this. I would put pressure on for your DH to wear the dress but we are a mean family 😂

They are not making fools of themselves for going to a Halloween party ffs.
