To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

Pretty sure it's illegal to have kids playing for alcohol prizes.

This is what I was thinking too

WiserOlderElf · 29/09/2024 14:38

And then the next kid who gets the bottle of wine, with the number on that should have been a child friendly prize, but there are no child friendly prizes left… they get the short straw?

Yes but OP’s daughter would’ve had an appropriate prize, which is all that matters!

Tiredalwaystired · 29/09/2024 18:24

For what’s it’s worth I won a brand new Peppa Pig play house in a Tombola last week. I have teenagers and don’t know any pre school kids these days. Could have moaned to the hard working organisers but instead I took it to a local charity shop.

IHaveNoMoreFucksToGive · 29/09/2024 18:29

You get the wine she gets some chocolate
You get tipsy and your child gets a sugar rush

Seriously....was this really worthy of a post?

Jheeeez 🤣

eeeeeeeee · 29/09/2024 18:36

To be honest, I don’t really see the issue. You are at a pub after all, alcohol being involved isn’t surprising and the alcohol is obviously intended for the adults in the household. Just replace the prize with something else yourself.

Barney16 · 29/09/2024 18:39

"buy" the wine off her and then everyone will be happy. (Happier)

Prescottdanni123 · 29/09/2024 18:44

If they are going to let kids buy tickets, they should have a different set of numbers for the kid's prizes.

Bellyblueboy · 29/09/2024 18:45

You buy the bottle of wine off her then take her to a toy shop?

teach her maths, economics and probability?

Exactly, that's the sensible thing to do, that's the way it goes with tombolas - you don't always get what you want, or indeed anything!
You don't just go swapping or moaning, it's half the fun!

Hereforaglance · 29/09/2024 18:55

So your kid won alcohol in a tombola in a pub and you are upset because your k8d did not get exactly what she wanted veruca salt from Charlie and the chocolate factory come to mind

DinosaurMunch · 29/09/2024 18:57

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/09/2024 18:11

This is what I was thinking too

They didn't give the alcohol to the child, they gave it to the parent. They knew the child was with the parent. Nothing illegal happened here.

If OP didn't like the prizes she shouldn't have entered. She should have taken her kid to the toy shop. Or maybe the pub had one of those machines you can put a pound in a get some plastic tat.

It's supposed to be a game of chance!

RightOnTheEdge · 29/09/2024 19:06

If you let your kid gamble, then you have to explain to them how gambling works.
You win some, you lose some.
You mostly lose some.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/09/2024 19:07

My grandson won a bottle of wine in a raffle when he was about 9. He wrapped it up and gave it to his mum for Christmas. I thought it was sweet.

BrendaSmall · 29/09/2024 19:07

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:36

You just swap the numbers on the prize, that’s all. It takes 2 seconds.

so if you give her a child friendly prize. You take the number off the child prize and then put it on the bottle of wine, sorted.

This would be the easiest thing to do after a child had won alcohol.

Edited

You’re completely missing the point!!

op stated that if your child was given a teddy then another child could come along and get the wine and you would be happy, as long as your child got what it wanted!!
Its called gambling for a reason 🤣🤣

Nanny0gg · 29/09/2024 19:08

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:11

There were other child friendly prizes there.

where I work, when a child wins alcohol on a tombola we let them swap it for a more suitable prize. That’s just the right thing to do.

We didn't

We just made them fetch their parents to collect it

Just keep the wine and buy your DD something else

Nanny0gg · 29/09/2024 19:09

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/09/2024 18:11

This is what I was thinking too

Nope. They just can't collect their winnings

Your kid can't win something they want every time.
That's kind of the point of gambling.

Whaleandsnail6 · 29/09/2024 19:11

All if the people saying they shouldn't/dont think kids are allowed to play a game where you could win alcohol...would you really make a fuss at what is likely a money maker for a charity?! Adults can decide if they want their kid to play a game where a potential prize may be alcohol...just let it go.

I wouldn't make a fuss no. But I'm not the gambling commission or whatever they are called

ToNiceWithSpice · 29/09/2024 19:32

Bloody hell, this is how tombolas have worked forever , do people really have to moan about everything these days?

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 29/09/2024 19:32

That's how tombolas work. A ticket is assigned to a prize. They didn't say she had to drink it!

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 29/09/2024 19:32

Karmaisac4t · 29/09/2024 14:13

Tbf they aren’t supposed to give alcoholic prizes to under 18s

I suppose a tombola is gambling so children shouldn't even be playing!

Ladyzfactor · 29/09/2024 19:33

Can someone explain what a tombola is? I'm American and have never heard of them.

TofuTart · 29/09/2024 19:44

Ladyzfactor · 29/09/2024 19:33

Imagine a barrel with a little hatch
in the top.
The barrel is filled with tickets - the stall holder spins it round and then you take out 5 of them.
If you have a winning ticket number you win a prize (each prize is labelled with a number, if yours matches you win it. 🙂)
Great fun.
Hope I've explained that well and it makes sense lol

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/09/2024 20:05

@LionMummy8 why did you let your child buy a ticket if they could potentially win alcohol?

Did you not see the prizes? Seems very irresponsible of you.
