To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

There's supposed to be a kids' tombola and an adult one to avoid falling foul of licensing.

DD gave the pound to her for the ticket.

So your daughter who shouldn't have been able to buy a ticket for the "tombola containing alcohol" used your money and bought a ticket, and won alcohol.

Obviously you gave it back, as you can't be this indignant about them not substituting for something else, but not pearl clutching that she shouldn't have even had a ticket in the first place?...

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/09/2024 17:38

There really is no rule preventing a child buying a tombola ticket where some the prizes are alcohol

Differentstarts · 29/09/2024 17:38

The whole point of a tombola is your donating to a charity if you win anything it's a bonus

Ah, I was going on what was being said at the beginning of the thread.

The whole things so pathetic I hadn't read any further.

Just take your prize and go. If you don't want your kid to win wine, don't let them enter a game where wine is a prize.

goodboystepup · 29/09/2024 17:42

That's not how tombola works. You get whatever prize is attached to your ticket.

The world doesn't revolve around children.

Falsenegative · 29/09/2024 17:42

Seven is surely old enough to take pleasure in giving the won wine to you or another adult relative? You play for fun not the amazing prizes.

Moveoverdarlin · 29/09/2024 17:43

Come on OP. It was a pound. My 7 year old would think this was hilarious. And would probably make me give them a fiver for the wine. Which I would do.

Lighten up. I can’t imagine starting a thread over something so utterly trivial.

Exactly.
I've always been lucky at tombola. Once when I was about 8 or 9 I won an exterior light kit. I gave it to my GPs who were delighted (as was I). Never even crossed my mind (or my parents) to complain and ask for an age appropriate prize.

Christ the things people moan about on here.

@Twototwo15 because there are actually very strict rules overseen by the council / LA on how to run raffles and tombolas as it is a form of gambling. So a Pub Manager running it at the pub they work at and presumably hold a license for needs to run it properly so as not to break the rules particularly where alcohol is concerned.

That doesn't mean some well meaning people don't know that and just run it how they like for random charities or the PTA. Normally for a tombola you would have a book of raffle tickets and stick all the tickets ending in a 0 or 5 on the prizes randomly and then fold all of the other tickets up jn a bucket. The person picks the ticket and matches it to a prize, the person wins that prize and should not swap unless for an alcohol free item (that is not another prize but held separately - the pub manager could have done this). Alcohol must be sealed and there must be a complete chance of winning / not winning. Obviously we've all been to places that have swapped but they shouldn't and normally that's run by people who havent got a job to lose if found to have done it wrong and dont know the rules in the first place. Similarly see selling raffle tickets on advance of events - that's a big no-no too without the correct documentation, doesn't mean places don't do it.

StarDolphins · 29/09/2024 17:46

I would love this! “Oh what a shame darling, not to worry, I’ll force it down”.

DrinkElephants · 29/09/2024 17:50

That’s the point of tombolas.

I remember winning wine at school fetes on them and excitedly running over to my mum to get her to collect the bottle of wine I’d won (as obviously they wouldn’t give it to me without an adult). It was still exciting

Fevertreelover · 29/09/2024 17:53

Children are not allowed to buy tickets if the prizes include alcohol.

JudgeJ · 29/09/2024 17:56

sugarplum33 · 29/09/2024 14:11

Pretty sure it's illegal to have kids playing for alcohol prizes.

I thought that too, when I run the Church tombola at the Christmas market event I always have a few child friendly prizes under the table that are not a part of the tombola. Some parents are pleased for their child to win a bottle of something though, I usually suggest to the child that their parent 'buys' it from them!

StampOnTheGround · 29/09/2024 17:59

Sorry OP but YABU, that's literally how a tombola works, there's always a load of prizes and half of them aren't suitable for you or whoever's playing.

I won a bottle of wine at a similar age to your DD and ran back to my mum and dad to give it to them!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/09/2024 18:00

This thread is just reminding me of the time that our school fair was so short of prizes for the bottle tombola that they sent an SOS message round the PTA. I ended up donating bottles of ketchup and mayo to make up the numbers.

TerfTalking · 29/09/2024 18:01

Gat a grip, we’re talking a quid for charity.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 29/09/2024 18:02

DS won a wicker picnic hamper with a full crockery/cutlery/glassware set and a bottle of champagne, I was chuffed! Certainly wasn't expecting him to swap it

ETA and he was thrilled to win it and give it to us

This is not true

Sunnysundayicecream · 29/09/2024 18:06

Tombola is a game of chance, sometimes you get something great, sometimes something rubbish like a pair of socks! It's not get a winning ticket and pick the best prize on the table. I wouldn't have batted an eyelid at this, probably would have bought my DS a packet of crisps in exchange and they would have been happy. If I'm honest my children quite often pick a bottle of wine from an open raffle, as the know mummy likes it. They even know to pick pinot first and don't touch the red!

TwoBlueFish · 29/09/2024 18:07

Same happened to me at about the age of 10, I won 2 bottles of champagne in a raffle. I was very disappointed, my parents less so!

GivingitToGod · 29/09/2024 18:09

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:11

There were other child friendly prizes there.

where I work, when a child wins alcohol on a tombola we let them swap it for a more suitable prize. That’s just the right thing to do.

Agree

BurbageBrook · 29/09/2024 18:10

Is this honestly all you have to worry about? Hmm
