To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

@TofuTart

Young kids are too small to understand gambling. All they know is that they have won...but received a disappointing prize. Either sell to adults only or make sure that the kids receive something age appropriate.

I’ve gone back tonight as DD kept going on about the teddy on the tombola. The tombola has finished now but they said no one had won the teddy. So I’ve offered to donate to the charity which they then said I could have the teddy for her if I left them a cash donation for the charity so that’s what I’ve done and now DD has her teddy.

Must have been an impressive teddy for all this aggro!

You went back! Wow.

westernlights · 29/09/2024 21:00

i imagine you have left a lot of people in your wake both concerned for your mental well being and your capability to parent.

There will also be a fair few who will be chuckling about this for days to come

Tbf they aren’t supposed to give alcoholic prizes to under 18s

This.
When we run a ‘family tombola’ it can’t contain alcohol for this reason.
We have to have two, one for kids and one for adults.
They could have swapped it. You just change the tickets over! Not a very big deal. A bit mean and jobsworthy to not swap in my opinion.

That's not at all what I meant.

It’s really not a big issue if kids are disappointed sometimes. I used to hate if if I won floral soap on the tombolas forty years ago. But thems the breaks. I’m not scarred for life and neither will they be.

God, you're making a huge rod for your own back.

Ghosttofu99 · 29/09/2024 21:21

You’ve got what you wanted so you should probably drop it now. They were just raising money for charity.

How very fortuitous 🙄

Kids need to understand that life doesn't always go their way. 'Keeping kids happy' is pretty unrealistic and unnecessary

Exactly this. I'm cringing for OP, as if she actually went back.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 29/09/2024 21:53

In your system, OP, what would happen if the last two prizes remaining were wine, but both tickets drawn were being held by children?

To be fair, I can't imagine many children being desperate to enter a tombola in the first place if the only remaining prizes were booze...

MayaPinion · 29/09/2024 21:59

I’ve only ever won two prizes as a kid. One was a trouser press and one was a crystal ashtray on a stand. A bottle of wine is a great prize.

I can't figure out whether your a complete fruit loop, your raising verruca salt, your an alcoholic who takes her kid to pubs on school nights or your a Billy bullshitter this is a really odd thread

CoffeeGood · 29/09/2024 22:03

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 21:35

I agree!

Can you really not see that although your child might have been happy if they had swapped, another child that should have won that teddy might have been sad. Or are you one of the "I'm all right Jack" parents, that as long as your child is happy, sod the unfairness to someone else's child. And maybe THAT child's parent wouldn't have been able to throw money at the problem?

Your child is going to grow up entitled because at aged 7, she's realised if things don't go her way, mummy will throw some money at the problem and she'll get the thing she wanted. Good luck in another 7-9 years!!

Oh my god. You are raising a diva.

7 year olds don’t win what they want and need to cope with that. What were you thinking?
