To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

If there are no dinosaurs then what will the Barbie’s ride? Or battle? Or be eaten by?

Summerx · 01/10/2024 14:44

DD5 loves dinosaurs! So do most of her friends. She even has a t shirt saying 'Girls like dinosaurs too'!

Maybe just buy her female dinosaurs?

hmmmmmm. because all the dinosaurs being female worked out SO WELL for John Hammond :P

Maraudingmarauders · 01/10/2024 14:53

Just tell her Bryony Page is a gold medal winning female olympian who also has a degree in dinosaurs.

I actually think it's odd that so many posters are so aghast at your friend's comments.
Of course it's sexist,narrow-minded, and ridiculously damaging to think like that but in my experience many people do think like that. They know they're 'not meant to' but it's hardwired into, I'd say most people's thinking to a certain extent.
My 9 yr old dd loves cars, always has and everyone knows it. She loves all the stereotypical girl stuff too but cars are her first and enduring love.
One uncle is the only person to have bought her cars. Now that she's older and into more recognisable girl stuff aunties and granny are delighted to buy her those things but have never bought cars. Even friend's/ friend's parents are all aware of her car collection but none have added to it. I do think people feel odd for some reason gifting a girl a stereotypical boy thing. You only need to look on the what to give for Xmas lists on mn to see the stereotypes of girls things are only on the girls lists and vice versa for boys.
Just this summer a woman was telling a story about the school bag her younger daughter had chosen was blue and had sharks on it, she was shaking her head going, 'trust her'. When I genuinely was perplexed as to the issue she says, well it's very boyish.
I think people think it's fine in theory for children to like and play with any toy but over the years in people's houses and living rooms I see very little evidence of this in practice.

LostMySocks · 01/10/2024 15:19

Ask yourself...

Do you need a penis to play with it?

If no then it's a great toy for any child
If yes then it's not a toy suitable for a child.

Greydogs123 · 01/10/2024 15:30

my dd had dinosaur toys and books at that age and impressed the preschool assistants with her ability to correct their pronunciation of the more complicated ones! Both boys and girls can l like dinosaurs and I would tell "friend" to stop insinuating your child is odd for liking them!

@Awumminnscotland That's just your extended family and friends.

Mine think it is normal to get cars, robots, super hero stuff, whatever for any child in the family as long as they will play with it. ( This is one reason why I do the job I do.)

PrincessOlga · 01/10/2024 15:43

I know kids in different countries and there is something about dinosaurs that they all seem to love so much. I remember studying dinosaurs at school (so a bit older than your DD) and, honestly, that is just about the only thing I remember from primary school (except a few science lessons and how to do long division).

@Awumminnscotland I think your views are quite unusual I was born in the 1950s and that's not my experience.

Peonies12 · 01/10/2024 16:36

Unless you operate a toy with your genitals, it doesn’t matter

It's just my experience since having my child. I think it is definitely a general thinking in our area. It's not my thinking, thats why i notice it. I was born in 71 and it wasn't my experience as a child either. I think as others have said gendered toys have become more prevelant over the last 20 years or so.
Our primary school until the last 3 or 4 years was still handing our princess activity sticker books to girls and animal books to boys. They are improving but slowly.

No, it's definitely not. It's my experience of the area and the people over the last 10 years.

that sounds AMAZING!

It was a week or so after lockdown so everything was arranged quickly. The shoes were irregular choice and a real work of art.

@dinosaurgirll I have been unable to PM you on the app but I've got a fantastic Dino pillowcase with a head and tail that turned up yesterday when I was clearing out some bed linen. My son is out of his Dino phase now but I'd be delighted to send it to you if you'd be OK with PM'ing me your address. I won't be at all offended if you'd rather not 🙂
