To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

thia a bit too.

Because when you hear it from someone close to you it can make you doubt even your strongest of views.

Penguinmouse · 28/09/2024 12:35

How depressing that we consider dinosaurs “boy toys” and are making those assumptions at the age of three. Get your daughter a gift she would actually enjoy and don’t be trapped by gender stereotypes.

StrawberrySquash · 28/09/2024 12:38

It's 2024! Obviously the dinosaurs should be pink and make sure she only plays happy dino families with them. No asteroids or anything. That'd be science.

Haha, well the ones she plays with at nursery are dinosaur coloured and she likes to make loud "roar!" noises with them. So I'm not sure she will conform to playing happy pink dino families 😂

Of course you should buy her dinosaurs. Your friend is the weird one.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 28/09/2024 12:49

Around 50% of dinosaurs WERE girls. Fact.

Stewandsocks · 28/09/2024 12:50

You might make her trans, so no.

YellowphantGrey · 28/09/2024 12:55

Hate to break it to you but the majority of 3 year-olds all go through a dinosaur phase, boys and girls, nothing special about it.

Tell your friend a penis isn't relevant when it comes to choosing interests and hobbies, you will blow her mind!

'Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! '

Not in the slightest. But your friend is.

Buy her what she wants/needs. Dinosaurs are harmless - unless you believe Jurassic Park is real.

Erring on casual sexism/homophobia?

but its not someone close, the OP says this is a new friend.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 13:04

I have found the perfect book for her, encompassing both of her current interests - dinosaurs and poo 😂

Although she prefers "sparkly poo" to regular - however I think a sparkly pooping dinosaur might be a bit too niche? 😬

Thanks to the PP who shared a link to a sparkly poo cushion - you've saved Christmas 😂

I have a knitted dinosaur jumper and a cardigan with dinosaur buttons.

Links please! Grin

WhappleBee · 28/09/2024 13:13

Ridiculous of your friend to say. Just did Mary Anning (female fossil hunter) as a topic at school with year 1 and 2 and both boys and girls loved it! All the Dino facts and they were outraged that she wasn’t rich and famous for her work just because she was a girl!

Also there’s a lovely Dino themed chocolate birthday cake in Tesco atm btw!

ForeveraBluebird · 28/09/2024 13:15

@dinosaurgirll , I had a look for the toy I mentioned, it’s called Dino Mountain by ELC. I’m now feeling officially old, it’s listed for £35 on eBay and referred to as vintage.
My girls had hours of fun with it, roaring dinosaurs chasing my little ponies for ages.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 13:17

@ForeveraBluebird
It's not this, is it?

There's a Dinosaur that pooped Christmas too

BreatheAndFocus · 28/09/2024 13:30

WTF???! Has your friend been transported here from the 1950s?? Why on earth would dinosaurs be a ‘boy thing’? I had lots of dinosaurs as a child plus loads of books about them (I was obsessed 😀) Nobody thought it the slightest bit strange.

We really are going backwards.

Itwasntme101 · 28/09/2024 13:41

Your friend wouldn't be impressed with me, my daughter when she was about 3 didn't like pink and loved dinosaurs. Most of the girls dinosaur clothes were pink so I bought her boys dinosaur t-shirts instead.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/09/2024 13:54

44, Female, love dinosaurs.

Have done since as long as I can remember, used to go to the National Showcaves in wales a lot as a small child (parents friends with the owners so it made for a very cheap day out) and my favourite bit was (and tbh... still is!) the dinosaur park.

Dinosaurs are brilliant, and not at all gender specific.

We bought Dinosaur Guess Who recently (there are no children here, its just for me and himself), it is our most played game next to the Royal Game of Ur (that gets a bit fighty at times so we do Dino Guess Who to chill out a bit!).

Bloody hell, what a sexist friend!

wishIwasonholiday10 · 28/09/2024 14:16

Of course your friend is being ridiculous! I was obsessed with dinosaurs for a period when I was 4 or 5 and would have loved to have had more dinosaur toys. There shouldn’t be an toys restricted to one gender.

WarriorN · 28/09/2024 14:16

My earliest "reading a book" memory is of a giant adults book about dinosaurs and evolution which I asked for over and over again.

It was a 1960s thing so dated quickly!

I had the full collection of those plastic dinosaurs you could buy from the NHM.

Bought ds1 a spinosaurus tooth for Xmas once (obvs for me too Grin)
