To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

When I used to work in a school nursery, I obviously observed the children. There were no girls, or boy toys to them, just toys. I know that changes as they get older, as they begin to absorb messages within Society.

Has your friend time travelled here from the 1950s?

That is almost word for word what I was going to post.

Seriously - this kind of awful, regressive thinking is why we have parents taking their kids to doctors when they don't conform to sexist stereotypes.

CouldSheBeAnyCuter · 28/09/2024 09:46

I don’t think it’s odd at all. I loved dinosaurs as a little girl and I still love them now as an adult. My favourite mug has dinosaur patterns on it 🤷🏼‍♀️

NoEscapingMe · 28/09/2024 09:47

One of my daughters was almost obsessed with dinosaurs as a child. She had lots of different types. The plastic one, soft toys etc. Even dinosaur bedding. She's turned out just fine. Your daughter will be thrilled with her own toy dinosaurs.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 28/09/2024 09:47

Your friend is weird and odd.

Plastic one's. There was many. Not just one lol

I'd be worried for any children your friend is parenting or can influence. Maybe tell her about Mary Anning? The Horniman Museum also has a great resource on current women palæontologists.

What else are girls not supposed to like? Maths? Sports?

I still like dinosaurs.

Haha this made me laugh 😆
She's a relatively new friend so I guess she has views that I'm only just discovering. This one threw me a bit though.

I do hope you intend to have a conversation with her in which you ask her to explain herself about this. And then you challenge the hell out of her.

I just bought a dino duvet cover set as a surprise gift for a friend, she was delighted, she is 36... so no, go buy dinosaurs... Dunelm in case you are interested.

MissFancyDay · 28/09/2024 09:49

I was born in the 50's and even MY Mum gave me dinosaur stuff for Christmas. In some ways it's worse now!

I think Lakeland does dinosaur cookie cutters and maybe dino pasta shapes? It's a fun interest.

This can’t be a real post…

Why would it not be? Do you honestly think that people do not have very rigid ideas about such things? How many Dads for instance would be happy to walk with their sons pushing a dolly in a pink pram for instance.

rainbowsparkle28 · 28/09/2024 09:49

I don't know why you've even given it a second thought - of course it is okay for a girl to like / have dinasours! 🤯 Your friend is ridiculous.

BlueRidgeMountain · 28/09/2024 09:50

Send your friend this, then ignore her.

Just had a look on amazon and interesting that many of the options that come up say "for boys". Which is odd, why is amazon deciding that? 😬

Fair point!

My DD is 4, loves dinosaurs, loves Paw Patrol, loves Luisa from Encanto, loves unicorns, loves pink, loves Mario, loves Pokemon... the list goes on. Toys have universal appeal, regardless of what the pink and blue brigade might like to make us think.

My husband doesn’t know what to get me for our anniversary, now I know what to suggest to him! 🥳

To sell twice as much stuff than if there was just shareable kids' stuff not divided into pink and blue.

Jifmicroliquid · 28/09/2024 09:51

Dinosaurs are for everyone! Let your little girl enjoy them.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:51

What makes them "for boys"??🤔

One of the biggest discoverers of fossils was a woman!

Kittybelle123 · 28/09/2024 09:52

My now 15 year loved dinosaurs at 3 and still does now. Your friend has a very dated view on this.

There are so many options out there for you to get your DD - I hope you find some fantastic things 🦖
