To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

Gosh, it isn’t a present for some child, it is yours!
so… YOU know best. 🌺

If she likes it and you can buy it. That’s it.

SharnGee · 29/09/2024 18:17

I cant believe you actually have to ask. And on Mumsnet. Are u that insecure??
Both you and your friend need a reality check!

My advice? YOU DO YOU!!!!!

BooBooDoodle · 29/09/2024 18:17

Not odd at all. I bought my son a Frozen tea set around that age and it adored it. He played house at nursery with the girls and other boys and loved dressing up. I once picked him up and he was dancing in a princess costume with a toy crocodile. He’s 10 and cringes at these stories.

LottieMary · 29/09/2024 18:21

Ditch your friend, she’s an idiot

Poodlemania · 29/09/2024 18:22

Perfect gift for a girl.

Buy her the pink dress with dinosaurs on and matching hair slides , all the girls at nursery have them.
Get her dinosaurs for the Christmas tree too.

TryingToStayAwake88 · 29/09/2024 18:24

The main question to ask your friend is "does the dinosaur toy need to be operated with a penis?" If the answer is no, then anyone can play with it

PC7102 · 29/09/2024 18:26

Of course it’s fine, what a ridiculous thing for your friend to say. It’s like saying that boys can’t have dolls

Butteredtoast55 · 29/09/2024 18:32

Tell your friend it's fine as they sell special sets of glittery dinosaurs for girls these days. You can even get little outfits for them so you can dress your dinosaurs up in tutus and put make up on them. Is that what she has in mind for 'girls' toys'?
I'm not really surprised she thought it but I am surprised she actually expressed it out loud without feeling completely ridiculous.

Just had a look on amazon and interesting that many of the options that come up say "for boys". Which is odd, why is amazon deciding that? 😬

Wait until you see 'calculators for girls', as if only SOME calculators are for girls.

J3001 · 29/09/2024 18:55

God no i was a propper tomboy when i was little i loved cars , trucks etc but still had dolls im 54 now never done me any harm

Er, what? Why can't she just have normal dinosaurs?

OP she'd probably love dinosaurs love underpants, too. Little bit of toilet humor.

pineapplesundae · 29/09/2024 19:03

Pretty sure there are plenty of female archaeologists out there. Your friend is the odd, misogynistic, antiquated one. Get your daughter the dinosaurs and play with her!

GuineaPigPosie · 29/09/2024 19:03

Your friend is odd! I hope your DD loves her dinosaur gifts. I work in Early Years and so many girls love dinosaurs.

I'm also a 25 year old female who loves dinosaurs!

Woodworm2020 · 29/09/2024 19:05

Wow, it’s your friend who is odd - what decade is she living in? Perhaps she would be more comfortable with you buying your daughter a play iron and ironing board and maybe a hoover? Get DD the dinosaurs and enjoy the play!

Jumpers4goalposts · 29/09/2024 19:16

My DD 7 is dino obsessed. One of her fav t-shirts says “girls like dinosaurs too”. There’s loads of stories about Mary Anning a huge palentologist who found fossils in Lyme Regis

At her age my absolute fav film was land before time. And i wanted everything pink and floral. Dinosaurs are cool for everyone.

It doesn't matter if others don't like it or understand it. Images her happy

As a parent, you need to be more confident in your decisions. My immediate reply to that would have been “what a ridiculous thing to say”. Your job is to stand up for your child, and although this time your friend didn’t say it to her, you need to be prepared in future to shut down comments like that, not start questioning if they’re correct.

I agree.

These threads are relentless and the OPs are always 'unsure after a comment'.

So part of them must still be in the boy/girl toys camp, otherwise they'd roll their eyes and get on with their shopping.

claremmm · 29/09/2024 19:27

one of my daughter’s nursery teachers commented that she was really into ‘boys things’ because she liked dinosaurs and robots 🙄

Your friend is bonkers

HTH

pollymere · 29/09/2024 19:38

Mine had gorgeous alphabet dinosaurs t-shirt from the Natural History Museum at that age. And a hand puppet dinosaur etc. Dinosaurs had genders. Playing with them doesn't!

JayJayj · 29/09/2024 19:39

Your friend so weird!
my nearly 2 year old daughter loves dinosaurs. I’ve bought her “boys” pyjamas so she can have dinosaurs on them. Strange how she thinks animals are gender specific! 🤔

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/09/2024 19:40

Your friend is seriously weird.

Musicofthespiers · 29/09/2024 19:42

I can't believe people think it odd that a little girl likes dinosaurs!

Ponderingwindow · 29/09/2024 19:43

I feel sorry for your friend’s son. He is going to have a skewed upbringing. He may even have difficulty finding a life partner as most potential partners, either male or female, will be looking for someone with more egalitarian ideals.

That's dreadful. As a Nursery Teacher I once had to correct a Child Care student's Formal Observation that boys in the Home Corner were playing at being Mums. I told her they were most likely being Dads. Although if they were plating at being Mums that would have been OK too.
