To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

My 5 year old SD was obsessed with dinosaurs and went through a phase where she demanded to be referred to as Diplodocus. We used to call her Dip for short.

This can’t be a real post…

100% agree with this post. I can’t believe this is something you would need to ask.

BreezySheep · 29/09/2024 20:30

Such a strange comment from friend… My sister and I grew up in the Seventies, and had train sets, cars and Scalextric alongside our Sindy dolls and Tiny Tears… we enjoyed playing with all of them!

Efrogwraig · 29/09/2024 20:34

Some great dinosaur books too. Dinosaur Roar was great. Even Peppa Pig & Dinosaurs!

SFHJ · 29/09/2024 20:37

I got this a few years back for my Dino mad daughter, two years later it still gets played with, and she always checks the babies are there.
my daughter has always loved dinos and it’s better now that pink ones are more available, she’s a girlie girl who loves pink but loves a dino too!

My two DDs are dinosaur mad. We have a huge tub of them and they are played with multiple times a week. DD1 got a remote control dinosaur a couple of Christmases ago that is her pride and joy and get shown to every visitor!

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 29/09/2024 20:51

At this point I'm just reading the thread updates to get a warm fuzzy glow from repetition of the word 'dinosaur'...

I’ve just been reading a thread about new generation parents being gender neutral and how ‘ boomers’ don’t approve. I can see my objection was justified, since we encouraged mixing up the toys, whatever the children wanted. Just as when we were children, I played with cars, my brother dolls and we both played train sets and scalextric and dressed in mothers dresses and high heels.
When did dinosaurs become ‘boy’ toys anyway? I’d have thought if anything could be neutral, they would be. Of course your DD should have dinosaurs if she likes them . I bought an electronic T.Rex that works through an app as well as simply pushing buttons for a 2 year old, who could recognise and name over 100 dinosaurs . It’s educational. Your friend is odd for thinking it’s funny etc.

@Bubblybits

I would never not advocate for my child. And I didn't say I planned to not indulge her interest. I absolutely would and do advocate for her, and I'm happy to buy her whatever she's interested in.

But I can still ask a question on a forum to gauge others' views, surely? Those things can be true whilst I still have a curiosity of others views? My self doubt would not have changed my action - which would always be to advocate for her. As parents we have lots of moments where we might question things and come to a forum to ask others' views - but the contents of my head (ie the self doubt in this case) doesn't always translate into action. It doesn't change what I would do for my DD.

So have you told your friend that she was being ridiculous then? That you’d appreciate it if she didn’t call your daughter or her behaviour ‘odd’, even under the pretence of joking? Because if not, no, you’re not advocating for her IMO, and if your friend is one who would have contact with her in future, you’re risking her coming out with a hurtful comment before you can stop her.

MissSkegness1951 · 29/09/2024 21:20

I'm old fashioned and I do think that some things are more for boys or more for girls but dinosaurs are perfectly fine for either.

CestLaVie123 · 29/09/2024 21:21

Not RTFT so I'm sure it's been said before - but your friend is the dinosaur, OP. Can't believe anyone holds such sexist views in this day and age. Please stand up for your DD and set your friend straight.

DrinkElephants · 29/09/2024 21:22

My 8 month old daughter loves dinosaurs! Ok she doesn’t know what they are but we have some wooden dinosaurs and she loves them!

OP it’s not odd! You’re buying your daughter something she likes for Christmas that’s definitely not odd.

AlmondsAreGreat · 29/09/2024 21:24

My 4 year old girl loves dinosaurs. She loves Frozen, and unicorns, and sparkles, and princesses too. She also has a large toy fire engine and a petrol station. This whole boy toy girl toy stuff is nonsense.

No, it is definitely not better that pink ones are available. There are just dinosaurs - not "dinosaurs" and "girl's dinosaurs".

Topazmumma · 29/09/2024 21:41

My 2.5 yo granddaughter is obsessed with dinosaurs, has her favourite on any given day (it changes) but it is absolutely not odd! What a weird thing for your friend to say 🤔 a lot of kids, both boys and girls love dinosaurs! You can get dino clothes in pink and blue (if you have a preference 🤷🏼‍♀️)

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 29/09/2024 21:53

I bet I'll be echoing many posters when I say that your friend is the dinosaur.

I really can't believe women are still buying into this shit in 2024, like all the pioneering women involved in STEM have passed them by. Mary Anning, for a start...

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 29/09/2024 21:54

Haha @CestLaVie123 - are you me?! 😂

Has your friend time travelled here from the 1950s?

I was born in 1950 and I don't recall anyone thinking that girls were odd for liking dinosaurs in the 1950's......

I have boys aged 2 and 4. My youngest has a much-cherished baby doll with a little buggy he pushes it around in, and my older one's most prized possession is a bright pink balance bike, which he loves because pink is his favourite colour.

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/09/2024 22:59

I bought my 3 year old a train set because that is what she wanted. She's 26 now and still remembers it as her favourite ever gift. Buy the dinosaurs!

LarryUnderwood · 29/09/2024 23:13

Your friend is daft and wants her head read.

LarryUnderwood · 29/09/2024 23:15

I had a train set when I was little and I LOVED it, also wore a boilernsuit for most of my 10th year. It was so much easier in the 80s and 90s to be child who just played with stuff and wore clothes they liked without these pink and blue boxes everyone seems to conform to now.

5foot5 · 29/09/2024 23:38

I was born in the early 1960s and apparently I used to tell people that I wasn't born, I was hatched from a dinosaur egg at the North Pole. I remained obsessed with dinosaurs for years.

Nobody at the time seemed to think this was odd for a girl as I recall.

How sad and strange that 60 years on this should be the case. Your friend is very strange.

Apologies to the 1950s then!
