To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

Please keep an eye on the situation and don't let your friend shame your DD for her interests. Kids pick up on that sort of thing. I'll never forget having my fossil collection chucked into the garden because 'thats where stones belong'.

Oh that's awful 😞

Your friend's opinion is ridiculous and narrow minded, but your daughter dinosaurs for Xmas as that is what makes her happy.

Your DDs happiness is what is important here, not the limited attitude of someone who doesn't care.

Thank goodness DH was happy to accompany Ds and his doll on many walks, trips to the park etc.

Not all men are sexist knobs.

No, but “not all” doesn’t mean “none”. Unfortunately, “not all” doesn’t even mean “few”.

Acommonreader · 28/09/2024 15:43

Maybe just buy her female dinosaurs?

TheKeatingFive · 28/09/2024 15:57

Of course it's fine, why is this even a question?

As parents, we need to stand up for what we know is right for our children, not be thrown by the opinions of loons.

gannett · 28/09/2024 16:16

I wouldn't be able to resist interrogating her on exactly why you need a penis to be interested in dinosaurs (such a bizarre thing to even think) and then to ask her what she'd think about a boy wanting a doll (the homophobia would immediately leap out) and then I'd drop her like a hot potato for being a cretin.

Oh really? I'll tell my friend this 😂

Mary Anning, there's a statue at Lyme Regis giving details of her life. Saw it last week.

Wildywondrous · 28/09/2024 16:33

My dd was into cars at that age and had a load of Toot Toot things for Christmas including the track and garage.

I think dinosaurs appeal to both sexes.

CowboyJoanna · 28/09/2024 16:46

YANBU!!! Who says dinosaurs are for girls!? If the girl likes dinosaurs let her have dinosaurs!

My youngest DD is what people used to call a tomboy. Hates anything and everything "girly", loves Star wars and football and dressing in boys clothes. She wouldnt be a happy bunny if I got her any dolls or soft toys, even more unhappy if I dared wrap any of her presents up in any pink paperGrin

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 28/09/2024 16:52

I wonder how many people here are going to get Dino Inspo for their own Christmas lists now 😆 Dinos are forever not just for little girls...

Seems like the right place for this tweet

Just thought I'd share a pic of DD's new bedding! She's absolutely delighted and can't wait to go to bed now - bonus 😂

What, your kids have a king size bed??

LBA40 · 28/09/2024 18:48

Your friend is sexist and annoying.

No, silly. For MY bed!

zaffa · 28/09/2024 18:56

My then three year old was given a set of dinosaurs that he still plays with at almost five.
Currently the dinosaurs run a nursery and the mummy dinosaurs drop off the baby and pre schooler dinosaurs when they go to work.
In fact when her teacher did her home visit she spent a long time building and explaining what all the dinosaurs were doing in their newly built city.

Octopies · 28/09/2024 19:12

YANBU. I got a Jurassic World lego set for my birthday and I'm 40 😆

Mill3nnial · 28/09/2024 21:13

Well obviously it's fine. Do you really worry it's not or did you just want everyone to tell you you're friend is being a twat?

Furrydogmum · 28/09/2024 21:24

Even 25yrs ago my husband's friend was a pillock for saying his toddler son wasn't allowed to play with prams at nursery! The strangest thing was he was a reasonably hands on dad 🤔

Blades2 · 29/09/2024 17:40

Clearly I too am odd. I love me a good dinosaur

no. She’s not odd. Science and pre historic toys are for girls too.
Your friends an arsehole tbh.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 29/09/2024 17:42

Dump her. The friend, not the daughter

Daisybridge · 29/09/2024 18:08

Nothing wrong with dinosaurs. I still have my dinosaurs I collected when I was a kid - my son enjoyed them when he was younger and now he's not into them (age 14) I've been regifted them! I'm now 48
