To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Sure - but men don’t seem to be dying from BBLs in the same way. Why’s that?

Because men are fat arseholes without the need for surgery?

No. What I’m saying is that not every woman cares about what is “expected” or what others think of them.

The fact that you find it so unfathomable that there could be more than a handful of women in the world with a mind of their own says more about you than my shaving habits do about me

I'm not arguing that women don't have their own minds, I'm arguing that there's pressure on women to conform to certain standards. I find it difficult to believe you've never noticed as billions is spent on advertising and there are very lucrative markets around it.

Five minutes FB searching reveals that one of the staff members of the "studio" where this procedure was carried out was looking for models for a discounted BBL to be done on 23rd September - that's the date this tragedy occured. Which implies it was a new procedure that they were just starting to offer, I think?

I'm appalled at this being basically unregulated. Just awful and so dangerous.

@poppyzbrite4 But you're a man. What would you know about the way women are socialised or the pressure on women to look youthful and attractive?

Because as I just told you, a female friend told me that she shaves for comfort.

How do you explain the billions women spend on anti aging products, the diet industry, Botox, make up and so on?

Losing weight is mostly about the health benefits for most people.

It's unusual for men to 'shave for comfort', if you're talking about manscaping, that came about because of porn. If you're talking about your armpits and legs, that's almost unheard of.

No, I'm talking about the hair on my face. I don't shave my body hair because it's not uncomfortable. I shave the hair on my face because it causes discomfort.

The diet industry is predominantly aimed at women who are judged on how they look to a far larger extent than men. You're not a woman so you won't have experienced it.

Well I have lost weight in the past, so I have indeed experienced weight loss. I think your comment was a bit bizarre- health messages, and media messages promoting weight loss, are definitely promoted to both genders, not just women.

There’s billions spent on advertising expensive new cars as well but many, many people still drive old bangers.

Yes, people can be influenced by advertising and social media but that’s very different to there being a “societal pressure” to have a BBL ffs

As it happens, women have a naturally higher body fat % than men. And it generally goes to the hips and arse. So there really shouldn't be any need for these insane surgeries.

Manxexile · 26/09/2024 21:49

"... People who have mentioned men on here, I've never heard any man ever suggest a woman needs overly plumped lips, or a gravity defying arse.
This is all down to the aesthetics industry, mainly run by women, and what they promote on social media."

As a man I've never seen a Kardashian arse as being at all attractive or appealing. On the contrary it's a big turn-off.

Ditto giant, pneumatic, hemispherical boobs and ridiculously filled lips. And all the men I know have the same view of these "modifications".

Because as I just told you, a female friend told me that she shaves for comfort.

I'm not talking about shaving or anecdotal evidence from a single woman. I'll answer the question for you, you weren't brought up as a woman and haven't experienced being judged relentlessly on your looks.

You haven't experienced the bombardment of messages on how you are supposed to look in order to be found worthy. Anti aging products aren't aimed at you, although there are now some products aimed at men, they are recent and few and far between.

The beauty industry is a massive industry and it's aimed at women, not men.

Losing weight is mostly about the health benefits for most people.

You're not answering the question, you're focusing on diets. I'll ask again, how do you explain the billions women spend on beauty products? How come men don't have drawer fulls of creams, tinctures, makeup and hair products?

No, I'm talking about the hair on my face. I don't shave my body hair because it's not uncomfortable. I shave the hair on my face because it causes discomfort.

The original debate was about women getting rid off hair from their bodies because it's a societal norm. You don't shave your legs because men aren't conditioned to do so. To be considered feminine in the UK women are supposed to have no body hair.

Well I have lost weight in the past, so I have indeed experienced weight loss. I think your comment was a bit bizarre- health messages, and media messages promoting weight loss, are definitely promoted to both genders, not just women.

So you've had comments and messages all your life about your body and how good it is to be thin? Weight loss products are aimed at men, it's mostly men at weight watchers and other industry providers? I'm surprised to hear that because men are usually encouraged to look bigger not thinner, to hit the gym and bulk up. Protein shakes are usually aimed at men for example.

I'm not saying that men can't or don't lose weight, I'm saying that women are under more pressure than men to look good. Accordingly there is a billion dollar industry around that. The fact you don't recognise that and find it 'bizarre' is because you're not female.

Do you really know what 'any man' thinks?

Obviously not. You never really know what anyone thinks, but by responses of men who are close to me I doubt it’s their thing.

shuggles · 26/09/2024 22:34

@poppyzbrite4 You're not answering the question, you're focusing on diets. I'll ask again, how do you explain the billions women spend on beauty products? How come men don't have drawer fulls of creams, tinctures, makeup and hair products?

I have creams for various skin conditions and various medicines. As for makeup and hair products, I don't have those because they would not benefit me. If you want to know why people buy makeup and hair products, you would have to speak to those people instead of me.

The original debate was about women getting rid off hair from their bodies because it's a societal norm. You don't shave your legs because men aren't conditioned to do so. To be considered feminine in the UK women are supposed to have no body hair.

My comment was just to explain that sometimes things that are seemingly cosmetic are actually done for functional reasons instead.

So you've had comments and messages all your life about your body and how good it is to be thin?

No, but I have had comments for a good part of my life about how I am too fat.

I'm surprised to hear that because men are usually encouraged to look bigger not thinner, to hit the gym and bulk up. Protein shakes are usually aimed at men for example.

I think you misunderstand what it means to become bigger. Bigger means becoming stronger and more muscular. Men who just binge on food and never do any exercise tend to be extremely weak (I know this because I've been there). One of the goals of bodybuilding is to minimise body fat %, not increase it.

Nutrition is a massive part of bodybuilding and gym rats obsess over nutrition far more than anyone casually going on a "diet."

artictern · 26/09/2024 22:35

BBL is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery in the world. This narrative that no man wants this is just false. Less men over a certain age want it, because it wasn’t the pushed beauty ideal they grew up with. It is the pushed beauty ideal now. Women feel pressured to have this because it’s what the men in their demographic expect, largely from p*rn, and women are still taught that their self worth is tied to how attractive men view them.

Citrusandginger · 26/09/2024 22:38

Just to be clear, this procedure wasn't carried out by anyone medically qualified.

5 girls have lost their mother because a beauty practitioner administered filler without having a fucking clue what they were doing.

It appears that things went wrong during the procedure. This isn't sepsis that developed in the days afterwards, it's an error during administration - possibly by injecting filler into a major blood vessel.

By all means criticise the so called beauty standards driven by social media, but we have to stop unregulated use of fillers and Botox if we are to avoid further deaths.

@BoobsOnTheMoon wow, the FB post you showed is so horrifying. I knew it was bad but I had no idea this sort of thing was going on!

Any brain dead air head can just open shop and do this??!

It's ten times worse than I even imagined.

Face stuff is not for men as far as I can tell.

Edited because actually some aspects
may be, but the demographic of men I’m talking about care less about the face and more about the backside. But then it ends up being a total package of a certain look. A p*rnified look. But the main driver is definitely the size of the backside.

My point exactly. You don't have a drawer full of various creams and other beauty products because they are rarely for men, the beauty industry is aimed at women.

I know exactly why women have those products; because women and girls are bombarded with messages about beauty from a young age. Women are valued for how youthful and attractive they are. The older a woman looks, the more she is dismissed.

I think you misunderstand what it means to become bigger.

I haven't misunderstood anything. I said that women are pressured to be thin, to* *take up less space. The diet industry revolves around women losing weight to be more attractive. Obesity isn't prized in men, but bulking up is. Ergo they take up more space.

Bulking up products are aimed at men, weight loss products are aimed at women. Losing weight for health is aimed at everyone.

reesewithoutaspoon · 26/09/2024 22:46

Think the issue is a lot of them don't see these reality stars as bizarre. this is the image that is pushed on them via social media. Just like heroin chic in the 90's.
To them that is the beauty standard they feel like they have to compete with. It's normal for them. I heard it with the young girls where I worked. They would bitch about other women saying stuff like "She has really thin lips, you think she would get a bit of filler to sort that out" like it was nothing. They were all botoxing their faces from their low 20's and getting tear trough fillers and any other tweakments that were seen as needed.

Citrusandginger · 26/09/2024 22:49

BBL is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery in the world

Surgery is done by medical professionals.

Beauticians and unqualified "advanced aesthetic practitioners" injecting people with unregulated and unknown chemicals and calling it a non-surgical lift, are just blindly injecting poison.

I'm desperately sad this lady has died, but I'm afraid it was only a matter of time.

As the story unfolds I imagine info will come out about him influencing her over a long period of time and essentially grooming her into more and more expensive procedures.

Facebook says she was an aesthetics provider too
