To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

@poppyzbrite4 They're done in order to look more attractive and in many cases, look younger.

I just explained that many people do some of those things not for cosmetic reasons (including looking attractive or younger). That was what my previous post was about.

I don't know any men who 'shave for comfort'.

You're talking to one.

I know many women who shave because it's expected. There's a lot of pressure on women to be hairless, even more so with the advent of porn.

Fair enough, but I also know a woman who told me she shaves because she prefers the feeling.

The diet industry is predominantly aimed at women as women are under a lot of pressure to be slim.

Weight loss is applicable to both men and women, and the evidence that being overweight causes health problems is overwhelming.

Yes I noticed she is a beauty practitioner herself and actually offered the BBL filler treatment on her own business page!

SometimesCalmPerson · 26/09/2024 20:31

Pressure from society is everywhere about all sorts of things. We choose what we value and therefore what societal fads we adhere to. Those children lost their mother because of vanity, not because of social pressure.

DonnaBanana · 26/09/2024 20:31

I don’t think you’re BU to think that. Most people do. But I think the same about mums who’ve had traumatic births then gone on to have more kids despite being warned against it as well. You could die on the table for all sorts of choice led procedures, just because this one was cosmetic, does that make it worse? What if it were to get a gastric band or correct a burns disfigurement?

But you're a man. What would you know about the way women are socialised or the pressure on women to look youthful and attractive? How do you explain the billions women spend on anti aging products, the diet industry, Botox, make up and so on?

It's unusual for men to 'shave for comfort', if you're talking about manscaping, that came about because of porn. If you're talking about your armpits and legs, that's almost unheard of.

Fair enough, but I also know a woman who told me she shaves because she prefers the feeling.

It's a societal norm for women to shave in the UK. I've lived in countries where it wasn't the norm and no women I saw, shaved.

Weight loss is applicable to both men and women, and the evidence that being overweight causes health problems is overwhelming.

The diet industry is predominantly aimed at women who are judged on how they look to a far larger extent than men. You're not a woman so you won't have experienced it.

Which sports have a 1:4,000 risk of death? Even sky diving is less than 1:100,000. I can imagine going for a run or playing tennis is anywhere near as risky.

I know someone who left a toddler fatherless after mountaineering in the Himilayas. I think that was equally selfish.

Cave diving is estimated to be worse than 1 in 4,000 at 1 in 3,286.

Men don’t seem to have any interest in BBLs, trout pouts or any of the nonsense which passes for beauty these days

One of the people arrested is a man. And he looks to have had a lot of work done.

It’s not too uncommon for men to shave their underarms but I’ve not encountered any who shave their legs, that’s for sure.

There is a terrible amount of judgement about this poor women, I’ve met her and she always came across as being lovely. I really hope her kids don’t read this.

It must be a modern phenomenon because I've never known a man to shave his arms unless it was for sport reasons, certainly not for comfort. Same with legs, I've never known a man who shaved his legs for no reason other than comfort. That's not to say it doesn't happen I suppose.

I think they’ve got bigger problems than a Mumsnet thread tbh

JanglingJack · 26/09/2024 20:56

You're not wrong.

It is tragic and I'm sure the family are feeling it more than anyone posting here.

She was a beautiful young woman.

enpeatea · 26/09/2024 20:57

We know nothing about this woman or her reasons actually. SO judgemental but typical on here

Oops outing hobby.

YogaForDummies · 26/09/2024 20:59

What a shame. There are always risks with any procedure, big or small, but it sounds like this procedure was riskier than most others and some people tried to warn against the use of it before this tragedy. Whether people undergoing it like this woman did are fully informed of the risk we might never know. It is really such a waste of a life.

Thats true Berksandbeyond, but why make things worse. At the end of the day many people assume that if somethings legal in the UK it’s safe. I hope this procedure is now banned.

These are for sports purposes, the discussion around men shaving vs women shaving is for aesthetic purposes. I’ve known men who shave their underarms for aesthetics.

TrishM80 · 26/09/2024 21:05

The pressure on women to look a certain way is no different than the pressure women put on men to be tall, have hair, a six pack, a big dick, etc. No difference at all as far as I can see.

Function · 26/09/2024 21:11

RedToothBrush · 26/09/2024 16:57

Men die from steriod abuse trying to get muscles.

That is very true

BeyondShocked · 26/09/2024 21:16

poppyzbrite4 · 26/09/2024 17:22

So what you're saying is that there's no social pressure in society for women to look a certain way? No pressure to shave, to look younger, to lose weight... No pressure at all, we spend thousands on make up, creams and tinctures, dieting, dying our hair etc for no other reason than it makes us feel good.

Edited

No. What I’m saying is that not every woman cares about what is “expected” or what others think of them.

The fact that you find it so unfathomable that there could be more than a handful of women in the world with a mind of their own says more about you than my shaving habits do about me

saraclara · 26/09/2024 21:17

Thebellofstclements · 26/09/2024 14:28

I would say "because men are too sensible" but then you see them with tattoos on their faces...
Safe to say that this is not a beauty pressure most of us feel. It's very extreme and not on the radar of the majority of the population because it looks so fucking ridiculous.

There's been a higher increase in men having cosmetic/body changing surgery.

I think it's more of a media pressure on people thing. Not just a pressure on women. Celebrities of both sexes are sending the message that keeping youthful and sexually attractive, is all, and worth spending money on. And the body dysmorphia thing is very real when you look at what other do to themselves.
