F**king hats in restaurants

TomAllenWife · 22/09/2024 13:15

Is my new irritation!!!!

Stayed at a naive hotel last night, at breakfast this morning, two separate men wearing caps for in the restaurant .

On holiday in the summer (boiling hot) men had to wear long trousers for dinner, no shorts, but you could turn up in a baseball cap 🤔

When did this become acceptable?
I resist the urge to knock it off their heads?
I don't know why it makes me so irrationally angry either (peri)

Is it just me?

Surely not as bad as hats in theatres

Completely agree with you OP! I haven’t read the full thread so apologies if someone else has mentioned it but there’s a really famous scene in The Sopranos where Tony becomes infuriated with a teenager wearing a cap in a nice restaurant. He’s absolutely furious about it. It’s a very satisfying scene to watch!

Hilarious! I want to watch the series again now.

Yes. Just you.

Danielle9891 · 24/09/2024 09:30

Maybe they are going bald and are trying to hide it. Honestly, it wouldn't bother me.

petmad · 24/09/2024 15:58

I find it irritating / rude aswell unless you have a medical conditon in witch youre more comfortable wearing a hat wear one. But please be respectful and take it off indoors i was always taught it was disrespectful to wear a hat indoors especially when people are eating or food is being served.

MrsChestnut · 24/09/2024 16:59

I’d be so focussed on my dinner you could sit on the next table in a full gimp suit and I’m not sure I’d notice 😂 let them have their caps and enjoy your eggs!

MrsChestnut · 24/09/2024 17:01

Tas long as it’s a clean one… I’ve noticed a certain celeb on social media who seems to have a tatty one glued to his head at all times and he looks so dirty!

There's no comparison. That's rude and ignorant and spoils other people's enjoyment.

But WHY? Who are you disrespecting and how? Surely if we’re talking respect or disrespect, there has to be someone on the receiving end. Who does it affect and how? Not one person has been able to explain on this thread - and no, “It’s what I was taught” or “It’s poor etiquette” are NOT proper answers.

For example, I can see why a holiday hotel might ask guests not to come to breakfast in swimwear - it’s something that might bother others from a hygiene perspective. I can see why it’s not appropriate to be displaying a lot of flesh. But a hat? It affects no one else.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2024 20:20

Whilst I think it looks bad, it's not unhygenic. Whereas unwashed tracksuit bottoms with underwear hanging out are more likely to be.

Melodysmum12 · 24/09/2024 20:22

Erm
no I don’t care!!

BigAnne · 25/09/2024 09:32

@TomAllenWife This is obviously an issue for boring oldies.

My husband could’ve written this post. It REALLY irritates him too. I’ve just read your post to him and he totally agrees with everything you say. Especially the bit about wanting to knock it off their head. I think he might actually do it one day …….

Not really sure whether you’re being serious.
That would be assault, nobody, has a right to do this.Live and let live, it’s really not that difficult.

I don't think anyone has specified their age?

It's a ridiculous thing to get so worked up about.

whoputallofthatthere · 25/09/2024 20:35

I've just read this entire thread from start to finish. Thanks for the laugh 😂

I'm all for being respectful to others, of course, but there has to be a reason for these "rules." I could say that I think it's terribly disrespectful for anyone to wear brown shoes or a red t-shirt in a restaurant, but that doesn't make it actually so!

As someone else said, nobody has been able to actually verify why wearing a baseball cap to breakfast is so breathtakingly rude. "Because I was taught that" or because "that's how it was in the old days" are not good enough reasons to be judgemental to other people minding their own business, which is far more rude than simply wearing a cap on your head if you ask me.

That's pretty ageist.

I'm in my late 50s and don't understand the fuss about wearing hats in a restaurant (although I do hate baseball caps which probably marks me out as an old fogey).

I'm older. At a hotel breakfast I wouldn't even notice. I hate baseball caps too but their presence doesn't interfere with my breakfast.

I don't think the Tony Soprano link someone posted is on point. That was obviously an expensive restaurant, in the evening, where the expectation was quite formal dress. It is a bit entitled if you're going to go to somewhere with a dress code just to decide it doesn't apply to you- but breakfast? No, as long as you're out of your jammies, fine.

My advice, mind your own business. Being a busy body is not a good look.

AdaStewart · 26/09/2024 13:15

Some people would rather wear a cap & look an idiot than be bald. Just shave it off you daft bastards!

Wtf.
I went partially bald from medication. Its not "daft" to choose a hat over shaving.

So if you’re having chemo and stressing about your cancer as well as your appearance changing because of the treatment you’re a daft bastard are you ?

So you’re saying that even if you have a medical condition which makes it more comfortable to wear a hat you should be ‘respectful’ and take it off indoors. What may be irritating to you, may be the last vestiges of dignity to someone undergoing cancer treatment.

franceslucia · 26/09/2024 20:42

Oh dear why would you do that?

CrowleyKitten · 16/10/2024 00:24

what's a Naive hotel, and why do you even notice what other people are wearing? went out for a meal on Sunday, and I can't recall for the life of me what anyone outside of our table were wearing. I barely remember what I was wearing. I remember my friend was wearing a dress with mermaids on because we went to the aquarium. there were five of us. that's the only one in the whole place I remember what they were wearing.
