Will Huw get a worse/lighter sentencing today because of his fame?

I honestly can't wrap my head around how anyone can be found with these kinds of images (someone who is known in the public eye or not) and they get such lenient sentences. Those poor children in that awful material have been put through hell for some sickos sexual gratification and will be damaged for the rest of their lives, why should the innocent ones be the only ones stuck with a life sentence. I'd like to hope he rots but I know it won't happen.

It's awful. That we should've come to a point where we can't realistically imprison people for this.

The stuff coming out is just repugnant. A one year sentence is not enough for this man or the other who was sending stuff.

Any lawyer trotting out “he was mentally ill” should also do jail time imo. Mental illness doesn’t make you download and pay for indecent images.

Everyone is entitled to representation in court and entitled to a fair and just trial and sentencing.

They should make an example of Huw.
Just as they made an example of the far right rioters in August by giving them lengthier sentences than they would ordinarily have been given.

She’s clearly being facetious.

Whatever his sentence we all know that he will get a book out of it, followed by a series of tv interviews, a tv special, then when he has done enough public weeping, self flagellation and kneeling on sharp stones saying how he has changed he will be lined up for a slot in I’m a Celebrity GMOOH, Celebrity Big Brother, Celebrity Mastermind, Celebrity Bake Off, Celebrity Masterchef etc

A whole new career awaits. The media loves redemption.

I doubt that very much. Once this is over I guarantee he’ll disappear never to be heard of again. In fact I’d put quite a lot of money on it.

TheGreatIndoors · 16/09/2024 12:17

I honestly think we need a law saying that if you receive CSAM images that you are legally obliged to report it to the police.

I hope so.

From the BBC newsfeed on my phone:
If Edwards does get a prison sentence, the maximum he can get from the magistrates' court is 12 months - we were already told that the case won’t be sent to crown court.

Gogosmarty · 16/09/2024 12:27

Neither. But if he doesn't get a custodial sentence then what the hell consequences are there for these abusers of children?
They should give him, and every other person who commits these crimes, zero sympathy and the strongest prison sentences possible.

Zanatdy · 16/09/2024 12:27

Disgusting details coming out. My heart goes out to all the poor innocent children who are abused for the sexual gratification of men like him. Disgusting

The problem is that there's not enough prison spaces, the police arrest so many men each month. This crime has really surged in the last few years. There's a huge backlog and investigations can take 2-4 years until it goes to court.

But his lawyers would be able to appeal, given that most offenders aren't given custodial sentences (see the article I posted). Unlike people who take part in riots who almost always are, at least in recent times.

VisitationRights · 16/09/2024 12:49

I don’t care about his mental health or the ‘perfect storm’ that was going on at this time or him pleading guilty or his claim about not remembering. I am sick to death of the lengths they seem to be going to excuse him of his crimes. It is sickening that men like him get away with this shit and worse. The scum who sent him the images got away with a suspended sentence so I expect the same for this waste of space.

PandoraSox · 16/09/2024 12:52

It is pretty stomach churning. His poor wife and children.

YellowphantGrey · 16/09/2024 12:53

There's no lengths people won't go to to excuse paedophilia

I think that a suspended sentence is fairly standard in this type of case. Look at the sentencing remarks for the BBC producer I just posted. It's the same kind of case.

I've just seen that the Magistrate in the middle of sentencing remarks for Huw Edwards has said

Mr Goldspring said: “I accept that your mental health at the relevant time and you had no memory of viewing any particular image and do not know whether you did. “You did not store the images, you did not keep them and you did not distribute them.”

This is building up to a suspended sentence.

ToniFire · 16/09/2024 12:55

Poor mental health.
Suicidal
Puritanical father
Elderly mother.

How many more excuses?!

It is pretty stomach churning. His poor wife and children.

Apparently they’re trying to reconcile the marriage, as sorry as I feel for his family I don’t understand any spouse who could stay with someone who committed such a heinous crime.

westisbest1982 · 16/09/2024 12:56

Lockdown was also blamed (indirectly).

Projectme · 16/09/2024 12:56

I'm listening to the live BBC feed and the amount of "mitigating circumstances" being quoted about him being in a 'perfect storm' at the time, that he suffers with depression, that he wanted to take his own life, the worry about the impact on his family, mental health issues that have gone on for a while now, ONLY a low risk threat going forward, the fact he had a difficult relationship with his own father, he'll be vulnerable in prison (?!?!?!)...blah blah blah. Poor Huw.

Boo fucking hoo. He's a paedophile and needs a custodial. End of.

He is pathetic.

Jacopo · 16/09/2024 12:58

6 months suspended for 2 years

LostTheMarble · 16/09/2024 12:58

This is building up to a suspended sentence.

I’ll be surprised if it’s even that. Sexual Harm Order, community service and probably a minimal term on a register. Absolutely no chance of a custodial sentence to be carried out. Such a disservice to those with mental health issues and/or having had a poor childhood never mind what little it shows towards the victims who have a life sentence due to people like him.

IsThisIt2021 · 16/09/2024 12:58

Slap on the wrist. Disgusting.
