Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

I love sourdough. I recently made sour dough bagels and they were lovely. The starter is a bit of a faff though.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/09/2024 12:51

I love it toasted but not "raw" in a sandwich.

I think the only way anyone enjoys sourdough is seriously. As in, they solemnly chomp on it, thinking how good it is for them and how virtuous they look eating it 😆

This made me laugh 😂

Exactly what I think, as they munch their crushed avocado on sourdough 🤢whats wrong with a good old bacon sarnie on sliced white bread 😊

Alifemoreordinary123 · 14/09/2024 12:51

Love it - not for a closed sandwich though.

RedRosie · 14/09/2024 12:52

Yes I too love sourdough, not supermarket sourdough, proper sourdough. Toasted and buttered preferably.

I also love proper wholemeal bread but it's almost impossible to find now. Proper weighty wholemeal bread. If anyone knows a source please do tell ... Since Cranks stopped doing it I can't find anything acceptable.

Not as cheap, easy and straightforward as soda bread, and you can have that in front of you with butter and jam at the ready in under an hour.

Plus soda bread tastes nice 😊

Exactly! Sourdough is such hard work to eat and has a weird aftertaste. But soda bread is the food of the gods and so easy to make.

love love love it

smashed avo smeared over it
topped with a poached egg
and chilli flakes

Edited

This (except for the chilly flakes). I'm not sure about sandwiches, but for brunch things it's the best. It seems to be the healthiest bread too, but I find it hard to find in the shops and cooking yourself seems hugely complicted.

southpawsofthenorth · 14/09/2024 12:53

I love sourdough but it’s probably not the best choice of bread for a sandwich.

Summerbay23 · 14/09/2024 12:54

I absolutely love it, but best toasted with many of the lovely suggestions here.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 14/09/2024 12:54

I love sourdough toast, I like that it’s chewy.

Bred isn't proper bread unless it's sourdough... ok I don't mind othe types of bread but sourdough is up there in the top spot before French baguette or a decent chiabatta!

But the traditional white sandwich bred that sticks to the roof of your mouth and has no substance is an abomination!

Completely agree
UK is used to the pap UPF that is supermarket bread
Grim
I make my own and have avocado on toast, scrambled egg or with strong cheese, ham etc
It's like bread you get in france/ Germany-bread,butter, cheese, tomato on the side.
Sandwich " fillings" seem to be a UK thing

My sourdough starter is nurtured like a baby

godmum56 · 14/09/2024 12:55

I love a good sourdough but am very choosy. I like the ocado ready sliced. Soft enough for sandwiches when fresh and lovely toasted

Drawahardline · 14/09/2024 12:56

Sourdough is delicious and should be worshipped.

BiscuitBeast · 14/09/2024 12:58

I absolutely love it. Just bought a loaf to enjoy dipped in EVOO, balsamic vinegar and homemade dukkah 🤤

Getonwitit · 14/09/2024 13:00

Sourdough is a thousand times better than the crap sliced standard loafs that supermarkets sell. Yes the rubbish in the shops is easier to use for sandwiches or toast but lets be honest it tastes of zilch, no matter wether it's Hovis, Warburtons or tesco value.

GenAvocadoOnToast · 14/09/2024 13:01

No. It's rock hard when toasted, like a spontex sponge untoasted and, to my palate at least, unpleasantly sour.

I've tried posh bakery stuff, made my own from sourdough starter and bought supermarket sourdough. I don't understand the hype.

Love it. Normal bread is just rubbish in comparison to proper sourdough.

The problem is "normal bread" from supermarkets in the UK which is awful. One of the things I love in Spain is the bread. NOT the bread from supermarkets specially in the costas, the bread in Madrid from hundred of small independent bakeries, baking it from masa madre. A small dough left to ferment before it's mixed with the bread dough. The result is a taste of pure heaven, crisp on the outside and so soft and light you can eat forever without needing butter or olive oil.

Applesonthelawn · 14/09/2024 13:03

If you're German it's almost hard to live without.

thinkfast · 14/09/2024 13:03

Proper sourdough is fabulous. Not supermarket stuff though.

It's got to be really fresh for a sandwich, otherwise it needs toasting.

butterfly0404 · 14/09/2024 13:03

Absolutely love it and it makes great croutons for soup when it's not so fresh

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 14/09/2024 13:03

It is delicious. But it's okay if you don't like it- more for the rest of us.

StarSlinger · 14/09/2024 13:05

Horrible stuff. Give me thick white sliced any day.

Olika · 14/09/2024 13:06

Yack don't like it being sour

Waffle78 · 14/09/2024 13:07

The only one I have tried I actually like is a wholemeal one from Tesco toasted. Sometimes on its own or poached egg on. Really nice for garlic bread as well.

I've tried some from independent bakeries but didn't like them for a sandwich or toasted.

MotherOfVizslas · 14/09/2024 13:08

I don't mind it, but it's not my favourite. My favourites are either rye bread or just a freshly baked white loaf with a burnt top 😋
