Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

NO!! Awful taste and texture. To be avoided IMO.

CharlotteLucas3 · 14/09/2024 13:11

Love it…the chewier the better but I’m a fan of chewy and rubbery textures. The Co-op one is perfect. Sainsbury’s not so good…too much like standard bread. Jason’s is good as a sliced version.

Choosetolivelife · 14/09/2024 13:11

I used to think people who choose it do it to sound "posh" but i think some do like it! I like thin & crispy, flatbread base or stuffed crust if I want carb heavy. I hate chewy bread.

ChampagneLassie · 14/09/2024 13:12

Ha ha, I love it, from our local fancy independent baker, or Gail’s at a pinch if I can’t get to the independent. Supermarket bread just seems like cheap filler to me by comparison. But I can appreciate it’s a bit of a desired texture

Most British bread is solidified paste sold to a nation without real food culture. The kind of bread you can eat without teeth. A food which doesn’t require any effort and which is like that because of capitalism. A food which uses palm oil or other fats to stop it drying to crumbs within minutes of leaving the oven. Which is sold commodified in plastic bags to encourage mould growth. Which is sliced because even that is too much effort for the lazy Brit.

Proper artisan bread with crust carries far more flavour, keeps better, and is better for you. And it keeps traditional baking methods alive and requires skill to achieve.

Is room 101 coming back? If so this goes in

VictoriaEra2 · 14/09/2024 13:12

Nope. Don’t like the taste.

BarbaraHoward · 14/09/2024 13:14

Can't stand it. The taste is ok but the texture is all wrong. Trying to cut through the crusts if it has, say, avocado and eggs on top is next to impossible.

Pre covid our favourite cafe used to have a whole selection of bread including soda farls, wheaten and Guinness wheaten. All devine. Now apart from the eggs Benedict and the flatbread it's all sourdough. Understandable from a budget perspective but I'm still gutted several years on.

WhamBamThankU · 14/09/2024 13:14

I'm just toasting a few slices to have with cheese and jalapeños on! The slices are huge though so I cut them in half before I put toppings on or the edge tears the roof of your mouth.

Retape · 14/09/2024 13:14

It sits like a brick in my stomach.

Over40Overdating · 14/09/2024 13:14

@SocksAndTheCity agree soda bread is superior in every way! You’ve inspired me to make a loaf today

UnctuousUnicorns · 14/09/2024 13:14

I've made my own a few times, from my own starter. The starter is somewhat neglected just now, but I'm sure I could revive it.

There's so many delicious bread types that can easily be made at home with great crusts though. It doesn't need to be weirdly chewy like sourdough. Come here to NI and eat nothing but delicious bread and without an ache in your jaw. Wink

I love sourdough, as long as it's the real deal not the supermarket reheated, frozen fakery.
Just bought a gluten free book to attempt to make gf sourdough.

Stopbeingawalkoverandwalk · 14/09/2024 13:17

Yes, we have many different varieties stashed in the freezer, and eat it both toasted and in its unheated state. Ordinary bread tastes inadequate in comparison.

Angelofmycoins · 14/09/2024 13:17

I love it. I love stale bread, bread sticks, anything bland and dry 😋

Werecat · 14/09/2024 13:19

It’s my favourite toast. Also good with pear and blue cheese for a sandwich.

Mrsdyna · 14/09/2024 13:19

Yes, I love it. Put a load of butter on it and have it with a soup and then see if you still don't like it. 😋

Angelselevenx · 14/09/2024 13:19

Love sourdough with avocado and eggs for breakfast 😍 much more filling I find too

I only agree with part of what you say. I make my own bread, it isn't chewy, and isn't full of additives. It isn't an either or. I have had some horrors of artisan/sour dough breads made organically with basic ingredients. It is okay to not like it. There are many different bread textures, and the "lazy brit" as you say doesn't have to get only from the supermarket, if they desire a soft bread. I am British, and shock horror I can make my own, and slice. Don't judge others, some people don't have the luxury of time, and need convenience.

I could lather my first born in butter and dip her in soup and I'd probably enjoy eating her. Because butter and soup. Grin

AutumnLeaves91 · 14/09/2024 13:21

M&S San Francisco style sourdough is great but I only like it toasted! I wouldn’t eat sourdough unless it was toasted

Waterboatlass · 14/09/2024 13:22

Yes but I love sour flavours in food. It doesn't work for everything texture wise but I think brioche is really, really unsuited to burgers (veggie in my case).

NotMeNoNo · 14/09/2024 13:22

I love it, have just fed my starter after a few weeks neglect. I like chewy structured bread though not the cotton wool stuff. DH has IBS and finds it easier to digest.

Everyone's tastes are different though, lucky for you other breads are available.
