Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

It was my favourite form of bread, guts me I can’t have it anymore as can’t eat gluten anymore, it’s the biggest thing I miss.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 14/09/2024 12:33

I think the only way anyone enjoys sourdough is seriously. As in, they solemnly chomp on it, thinking how good it is for them and how virtuous they look eating it 😆

Mirabai · 14/09/2024 12:35

It’s bloody awful. What’s wrong with everyone.

Cheeseandcrackers40 · 14/09/2024 12:36

My guts love it, normal bread bloats me and makes me constipated 😬

Alondra · 14/09/2024 12:36

Hate sourdough. It's too chewy and tastes funny even toasted.

Faceplantagain · 14/09/2024 12:37

I love it - but only the proper stuff - which means buying it from artisan bakeries at a significant cost! I have a local bakery where the bread is £4.00 a loaf, but I really notice the difference between that and a supermarket sourdough...

With hueros rancheros, shakshuka, scrambled egg, poached egg/avocado it's amazing :D

Would probably make amazing beans on toast too, especially with Chili flakes.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 14/09/2024 12:38

I love sourdough. Toast is my breakfast of choice, other breads are just too soft. Love a good ciabatta too.

ladycarlotta · 14/09/2024 12:38

Love it very fresh or as toast. It's not fit for purpose as a sandwich bread. People should stop doing that.

Toomanytesticles · 14/09/2024 12:38

It’s delicious toasted and drowning in some proper butter but, thinking about it.. maybe I just like the butter!

Namechangeforcheese · 14/09/2024 12:39

If it's properly sour it might be that the starter is too young. A more mature starter gives a softer, fuller flavour.

I love sourdough. It's the only white bread I will eat.

what I hate is the current trend for serving burgers on brioche buns. The sweetness of the brioche doesn't go with a delicious, meaty burger and the softness of the egg enriched dough collapses under the juiciness of the burger and toppings. A sour dough or ciabatta bun tastes better and soaks up the delicious juices without dissolving.

maverickfox · 14/09/2024 12:39

I love it. It’s pretty much the only bread I eat these days,

AgnesX · 14/09/2024 12:39

There's a lot of poor sourdough out there. I love it as a treat when it's good with good butter, which is usually in a particular restaurant. I'm fed up of raking the roof if my mouth with stuff you could stot off a wall

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 14/09/2024 12:40

In lot of bakeries they sell stuff that looks completely burnt. That I do not understand. I do like the taste of sourdough though, just not to incinerated. It's nice with just butter, or toasted with savoury stuff or honey

GoldenLegend · 14/09/2024 12:40

Love it and I also like rye bread and black bread.

Some sourdough has had vinegar added to fake it.

Nothing wrong with US, dear. How about you?

Mountainpika · 14/09/2024 12:43

Had it once - awful wind afterwards. Never had it since.

whatthedickens5 · 14/09/2024 12:44

I don't like bread and vary rarely eat it but when I do it's toasted sourdough with butter and salt. Yummy!!!

Some of us hate it. Why do you have a problem accepting it?

sweetpeasugarsnap · 14/09/2024 12:46

Love it toasted with avocado

Toastghost · 14/09/2024 12:48

I love it. It gives me a stomach ache but it’s still worth it.

I can see why you don’t like it though. Eating it is a bit of a different experience to eating normal bread.

SlowTitrater · 14/09/2024 12:48

Yes - if it is very fresh or toasted, then it is the best! Otherwise...

anniegun · 14/09/2024 12:49

Love it, but not the fake stuff supermarkets try and pass off as sourdough

JoJothegerbil · 14/09/2024 12:49

Love it. Normal bread is just rubbish in comparison to proper sourdough.
