Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

Love it

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 14/09/2024 12:11

Love it.

Especially with crispy bacon and butter

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/09/2024 12:11

I don't like most bread, I find it a bit sweet, too doughy (if you press it down it stays indented rather than springs back up) and kind of tasteless. I do love sourdough, I enjoy the texture and the slightly sour taste. I like it on its own, just sliced with butter, or to dip eg in olive oil and vinegar, or toasted and topped with things like smashed avocado. I wouldn't use it in a toastie or a sandwich though as too chewuand overpowers the other flavours

Werehalfwaythere · 14/09/2024 12:12

I LOVE it!

I love the chew, the slight sour taste with lots of butter. The crisp when it's toasted (which is the best way to eat it).

People have different tastes and preferences.

Either straight out of the oven or toasted. The in between stage is like chewing sour rubber.

The toast crunch cannot be bettered.

Super market versions give it a bad name and it’s not really sourdough. Has to be a from a proper bakery.

My 13yr old has quite a restricted diet, but it’s one thing that he loves 🙂!

ilovepixie · 14/09/2024 12:14

It's horrible. Who wants to eat sour bread!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/09/2024 12:15

Only toasted, wouldn't make a sandwich with it. Makes a great toasted cheese sandwich.

LeontineFrance · 14/09/2024 12:16

Some people who are allergic to gluten can tolerate sour dough bread. I always find the crusts so hard.

Motherofacertainage · 14/09/2024 12:17

Yes

Blingismything · 14/09/2024 12:18

Too vinegary for my liking. Will have it toasted.

Yes I think it might be the supermarket versions that some people are meaning when they say it’s tough or rubbery. It shouldn’t be. It should have a crunchy crust ( not unlike decent baguette) then a delicious slightly moist centre full of plenty of air holes and should bounce back playfully.
M and S do a decent seeded rye one but their white ones looked a bit supermarkety so I didn’t bother

Tisfortired · 14/09/2024 12:21

I love it, but only lightly toasted, I couldn’t eat it just as a sandwich.

It’s pretty easy, cheap and straightforward to make, though.

Not as cheap, easy and straightforward as soda bread, and you can have that in front of you with butter and jam at the ready in under an hour.

Plus soda bread tastes nice 😊

Jjiillkkf · 14/09/2024 12:22

Genuinely love the flavour and texture. But if not toasted has to be the day its made. And there is rubbish sourdough out there.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 14/09/2024 12:22

I absolutely love sourdough, but it definitely tastes better toasted.

Sourdough pizza is amazing too.

Mimilamore · 14/09/2024 12:23

I love it but she crack 2 teeth on it in a coffee shop in London, proved to be an expensive breakfast..

bifurCAT · 14/09/2024 12:24

Sourdough is the Rey Palpatine of breads.

Alleycat1 · 14/09/2024 12:24

I got a taste for it when I lived in Alaska. I love it!

mamakoukla · 14/09/2024 12:25

Love it but only if it’s a good proper sourdough. Mmmmm the slight tang just makes my mouth water and marries so well to many different flavours. Love the texture unlike so many store bought breads made using the Chorleywood process. Never doughy nor pasty in the mouth.

BreatheAndFocus · 14/09/2024 12:28

Yes,I love it! I find it more digestible and find it releases its energy over a longer period of time. I really like it and it’s delicious. I also find it more satisfying.

tigger1001 · 14/09/2024 12:28

Love sourdough. Wouldn't be my choice for a sandwich, but with soup, toasted, or just with butter - yum!

HaddyAbrams · 14/09/2024 12:29

DearGoldFish · 14/09/2024 11:45

love love love it

smashed avo smeared over it
topped with a poached egg
and chilli flakes

Edited

Add some feta mashed into the avocado. <chefs kiss>

I love a good sourdough (not from the co-op, theirs is awful). Plus it's lower in carbs than 'normal' bread.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 14/09/2024 12:30

It’s my favourite but only toasted. Couldn’t eat a sandwich made out of it.

peachesarenom · 14/09/2024 12:32

I love toasted sour dough! I dislike 'cake like' bread
