Why are so many people nasty to each other on here

Honestly, I have never been on a forum where people say such nasty things to each other. Fair enough, I haven't been on many forums, but users on MN will write a whole paragraph trashing each other. The judgemental attitudes on here are atrocious, most of the time over quite menial things. Do people really have that much time on their hands for this?

It's a bit like a bitchy office.

Jazzabel · 11/09/2024 23:05

Yeah it’s the worst of all the forums I’m part of. I think the tide is starting to turn a little though. I’ve noticed posters acting like bullies or dick heads are being called out a bit more recently.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 11/09/2024 23:21

You do realise this thread will likely go the same way lol some people just can't help themselves on here, could be a post about your favourite sandwich filling and 3 pages in someone will be calling someone a cunt

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 11/09/2024 23:24

People are generally only mean when the poster is irritatingly stupid or lacking self-awareness.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/09/2024 23:25

It seems extra bitchy the last few weeks. I’ve been calling it Miserable Mumsnet. I feel like I’m visiting a hall full of women arguing just to hang out with the 5% that are on my wavelength.

I was here 20 years ago and it was worse back then imo. I’m still here though!

That’s not true at all. People are mean just because they can be. There’s no consequences for talking smack to someone on the internet

I think it can be both.

This literally made me laugh out loud 😁

Peaky18 · 11/09/2024 23:35

Some people open a thread to entice a heated debate and subsequent posters don't see the bait and kick off.
I don't take part as I've better things to do with my life.

But why be mean to them? It's so silly

Are you new to the internet? This is positively tame compared to some corners of it.

LittleBearPad · 12/09/2024 08:48

Some threads perhaps. But there’s also incredible support,

Its swings and roundabouts.

I've seen some nasty things on the Internet. It's just people on here will write a whole paragraph of hate 😅 as opposed to just a one liner. It's like they think they're a paid critic.

It’s always been a very robust forum and that’s a very good thing in my opinion. There used to be Nethuns for those who wanted unqualified admiration and cheerleading for everything they did.

I think what has changed over the last 19 years is the general standard of intelligence, level of education and sense of humour as the number of users increased and other forums went under. The style of posting has changed. It’s duller and there are more sad sacks with no life or power beyond their keyboard.

rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou · 12/09/2024 08:57

Some people do seem to confuse honesty with being mean though.

Aren't you the lucky one? many don't have the opportunity to 'do better things'

BIWI · 12/09/2024 08:58

I think that if you avoid AIBU you'll find that it can be quite different.

You're calling something 'so silly", others might see that as mean (instead of just a view they don't agree with). 🫣

OldCrocks · 12/09/2024 08:58

Structural inequalities in society mean that women rarely get the opportunity in real life to speak their mind bluntly and stand up for themselves robustly, so they take full opportunity to do it here with relish.

I find some of the reflexive rudeness here breathtaking sometimes, but I understand it as a developmental stage, so to speak, that some women need to go through to develop as human beings.

Others are probably just cunts.

What @rosesareredvioletsareblueaimverytiredandsoareyou says is true:

You're calling something 'so silly", others might see that as mean (instead of just a view they don't agree with).

Too often people simply don't like being disagreed with, or challenged. Too often we (women on MN) are expected or exhorted to #BeKind.

And too often, those being disagreed with claim that they're being bullied.

This.

Also, OP, you’re misusing the word ‘menial’.😀
