Why are so many people nasty to each other on here

Honestly, I have never been on a forum where people say such nasty things to each other. Fair enough, I haven't been on many forums, but users on MN will write a whole paragraph trashing each other. The judgemental attitudes on here are atrocious, most of the time over quite menial things. Do people really have that much time on their hands for this?

Some comments do be awful, I sometimes wonder what crappy life people have to type nasty replies.

Some people would bitch in an empty room !

I also noticed that the 1st reply often sets the tone for other replies, it's nearly a race to get in there first, you can often feel the bile pouring out.

I’ve used MN on and off for around a decade now and AIBU has always been catty, it’s kind of the whole point of it. I have added threads to the chat forum on here in the past and received incredible help from people, advice that has genuinely resolved my issues. I’d never post on AIBU because I know how it gets!

Missamyp · 12/09/2024 13:36

This is how women speak to each other sometimes.
HR is filled with disputes and communication problems between colleagues usually females.

You do realise this thread will likely go the same way lol some people just can't help themselves on here, could be a post about your favourite sandwich filling and 3 pages in someone will be calling someone a cunt

This really tickled me. Very true.

MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone · 12/09/2024 14:25

Have you not seen TwiX op?

I feel like some posters are trying to be like anyfucker who was known for being blunt and not holding back on her opinions. But they’re taking it too far. From what I remember I don’t think she ever bullied anyone she thought of as having a low IQ or called anyone a stupid cunt for having a different opinion to her. She seems tame in comparison to some posters now. Still, they want that reputation.

What makes you think anyone else knows who anyfucker is though?

Also, she could be on here as a different name now.... she could literally BE any fucker! 😂

Ramblomatic · 12/09/2024 14:37

Because they'd never have the bottle to say the things they say to people on here in real life. It's that simple.

PandaWorld · 12/09/2024 16:30

That's what makes it so pathetic @Ramblomatic

StuffedDriver · 12/09/2024 16:38

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 11/09/2024 23:24

People are generally only mean when the poster is irritatingly stupid or lacking self-awareness.

Indeed. So if someone has a severe inner critic they may be showing up on here as a harsh exterior critic.

Wellnesswhattime · 12/09/2024 16:55

I had a good kicking when I posted about my abusive marriage. I'd bet my house none of them bitches would say it to my face though. They'd rather kick a woman about to become a single mum to a 1 year old. And 5 years later I'm delighted I left

Keyboard warriors, unleashing their dissatisfaction with life. They exist on any message board.🤷‍♀️

Aren't you the lucky one? many don't have the opportunity to 'do better things'

This is either satire or sad. Of course there are always better things to do. Many of which cost nothing, before you jump on me.

'irritatingly stupid' is an opinion, not a fact

Zanatdy · 12/09/2024 17:46

It’s really bad and people just argue the opposite despite what they think

TheCentreCannotHold · 12/09/2024 17:51

OP, avoid AIBU and you will find kindness, solidarity and incredible generosity in terms of how thoughtfully many posters will advise others reaching out for support. It's been an amazing help to me at various points in my life when I've needed advice.

Recently someone posted about thoughts on their autumn decorations. They received an onslaught of nastiness and horrible remarks from people who thought they were being funny. And someone stated "Are you American" as if being American is an insult.
Also the posts about Catherine, Princess of Wales and her recovery family film. All the comments " I'm glad she's better but..." which then slagged off her video.
Kate has had an appalling time as a result of cancer.
What sort of people enjoy being nasty about something innocent like autumn decorations and a woman who's recovering from cancer.

Exactly. Some posters get nasty about the most innocuous things. Itsjust nastiness for the sake of it imo.

kindlyensure · 12/09/2024 18:02

I think there are lot more insidious trolls on here than there were 20 years ago. By that, I mean - trolling tended to be the more fantastical OPs and now it is more snuck into the replies (you only have to look at the deletions through a thread to see that).

Of course there are still plenty of trolling OPs on here. I mean, literally LOADS. So some people will respond snippily if they feel they are being taken for a ride.

But also, the nature of the internet means that people are now used to just quick-firing off any old shit and not really thinking about it. Chat forums have got so huge people don't really have the feeling of pissing off a bunch of mates - it's just randos.

Riapia · 12/09/2024 18:43

Try being kind on MN and you’ll be eaten alive.
This is no place for the delicate of nature.
Also we are all anonymous, that gives us all courage. 😉😁😁

hollyhockfield · 12/09/2024 18:52

The best thing I have found to do is not be baited by the nasty comments. Either ignore or answer them very calmly. It takes the fire right out of them as they were hoping to get a rise out of it. Obviously it’s not nice to get those kinds of comments but it happens to everyone on here. And if it gets too much and it is affecting your mental wellbeing, then step away until you feel more resilient.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 12/09/2024 19:02

Allfur · 12/09/2024 17:46

'irritatingly stupid' is an opinion, not a fact

Absolutely!

And in my opinion a lot of the ‘nastiness’ is because other posters’ opinions align to my own, which is that most of those on the receiving end come across as irritatingly stupid or lacking self-awareness. Obviously as it’s an anonymous online forum people’s reactions will be far more direct that they would be usually acceptable in real life. But that’s the internet. It’s not new or surprising.

When people are clearly in need or seem vulnerable, posters are usually very kind and supportive.

The category of posters who ask Should I Go to A&E are a special case in the intersection of this Venn diagram.
