Disney adults

In the last year I've met three separate couples that are so into Disney.

I know we all like different things, but isn't Disney for children?

No. Disney is for anyone and everyone.

48Hourss · 05/09/2024 11:25

Disney is for whoever likes it.

Jifmicroliquid · 05/09/2024 11:26

Life is short and stressful. Do what makes you happy (as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone). If people want to step away from the horrors of adulthood for a few hours, good for them.

pinkyredrose · 05/09/2024 11:26

So what? Let them get on with it , doesn't affect you does it?

Snowpaw · 05/09/2024 11:26

The Disney adult I know had an incredibly difficult childhood, so I have always wondered if she's making up for that in adulthood. Each to their own.

yeesh · 05/09/2024 11:26

Why do you care?

PatchworkElmer · 05/09/2024 11:27

Not something I’m personally into, but then my hobbies aren’t for everyone either. World would be a boring place if we were all the same! It’s pretty harmless, doesn’t bother me.

TheStroppyFeminist · 05/09/2024 11:28

Yeah, I'm with you, I find it odd when adult women have Disney stuff everywhere.

whichonethistime · 05/09/2024 11:30

I mean it's not for me but neither is hiking, or Zumba. Can't get myself too worked up about people's interests that I don't share.

yeesh · 05/09/2024 11:26

Why do you care?

Because they talk about it so much!

This.
Who says it's just for children?!
I'm not particularly a "Disney adult" but hate it when people try to police or sneer at others for what they like and their interests.
Just leave people be and mind your own!
Liking Disney hurts no-one.

FatmanandKnobbin · 05/09/2024 11:31

What age are we supposed to like grown up stuff then? The eve of your 17th birthday?

And who decides what constitutes grown up stuff?

As long as nobody is being harmed it really doesn't matter.

Ardrahan · 05/09/2024 11:31

I think it suggests some form of arrested development, but I don’t judge it negatively, it’s just that if you’ve got a life-sized Disney mural on all your sitting room walls, Mickey Mouse stencils on all your kitchen units, and a sign saying WE DO DISNEY!, we’re unlikely to become close friends.

Yeah exactly.

Except for showing children age-inappropriate content, all hobbies should be for everyone who's interested.

flooachoo · 05/09/2024 11:33

No, that is all you need to know, no it isn't just for children. Have you not seen that video of the adult man being given Lightning McQueen Crocs by his wife? The sheer joy on his face? Why are things we enjoy as children only for children in your eyes? Colouring in was one of them, there are millions of people who still enjoy colouring in or painting by numbers. Do they also have arrested development?

But I find threads like these fascinating because someone starts it with I can't understand the love for X and then waits patiently for other people to come in and agree with them. Why do you need that? Why do you need other people to trash something other people love? Why can you not just internally think well not for me but no one is killing puppies for it.

If your friends are always talking about it to you maybe find new friends, there are lots of people out there who probably share your interest.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 05/09/2024 11:33

I love Disney!

BarbaraHoward · 05/09/2024 11:33

stardii · 05/09/2024 11:30

Because they talk about it so much!

That's a different problem. Anyone who drones on about something you've no interest in is boring and poor at reading social cues. Just change the subject just like you would if it was football/politics/golf.

I8toys · 05/09/2024 11:35

Its not for me but if it makes someone happy then crack on. The thought of going to disneyland without kids though. Its not the happiest place on earth when you're queuing.

Kitkat1523 · 05/09/2024 11:37

Disney is for whoever likes it

gannett · 05/09/2024 11:40

Definitely not for me but if it brings someone else joy, it's not really edifying to mock it.

MN has very rigid ideas about what's appropriate for sensible grown-up adults, there's a really persistent train of thought here whereby anything fun and enjoyable is something we should have all grown out of. I have seen the "aren't you too old for that" accusation levelled at pubs, clubs, pop music, gaming, sports, parties and indeed anything that suggests someone is enjoying themselves outside of domestic drudgery.

stardii · 05/09/2024 11:46

I don't make anyone feel bad for liking Disney. I do think it's weird, but I keep my opinion to myself (and on an anonymous forum).

I don’t think Disney is ‘just for children’ at all. Each to their own. I don’t ‘get’ Disney adults but I’m sure they don’t ‘get’ my love of, eg, football or gothic horror.

However, I find it irritating when anyone makes an interest into their entire personality, whether that’s Disney or Star Wars or Taylor Swift or Doctor Who or cats or golf or knitting or anything else. As a general rule, assuming a fandom/hobby as your entire identity and boring other people with it is usually annoying for others.

JazbayGrapes · 05/09/2024 12:01

i do think that its a bit daft when adults overdo it, like Disney themed tattoos. Otherwise its whole family fun. Just sad that in the recent decade the quality of content has plummeted.

Devonshiregal · 05/09/2024 12:02

from quick google:

Adult Animation was the most popular genre on Hulu this year with 1-in-5 viewers watching monthly, and around 14% of Hulu viewers watching daily. Furthermore, Adult Animation shows are consistently amongst the Top 10 TV shows on Hulu for both reach and engagement. In June of 2022 alone, Hulu viewers consumed 35 billion minutes of Adult Animation content.

So animation is huge and Disney is not just for kids - the music and the stories are definitely aimed at family viewing not child specific.

I love Disney but not fanatical like some. But I do get what you mean as I can’t stand games (online or in person) and am like wtf but people love them. Genuine question, what are you into? What do you enjoy most? Because I was always a bit cool for school when younger and thought liking things too much would make me lame. But now I see people who are super into war hammer or whatever and have lovely communities around it and actually think people who are really into stuff have it right - enjoy things wholeheartedly. So much better to be that way.

JazbayGrapes · 05/09/2024 12:08

My theory is that our generations - gen Ys and Millenials - we grew up with all the cool stuff. Film franchises, videogames, cartoons, toys and music bands - just because we are over 18 now, all that stuff didn't stop being cool.
