Disney adults

In the last year I've met three separate couples that are so into Disney.

I know we all like different things, but isn't Disney for children?

If you read what I wrote you’ll see i said that animation is clearly popular with adults judging by these kinds of statistics AND Disney is certainly aimed at family audiences (therefore not exclusively “children’s animation”).

i was making a point that animation is popular.

You might as well make the point that mice are popular.

Animation does not equal Disney and Disney does not equal animation.

The adult animation series you referred to are In some senses anti-Disney. They are cynical and nihilistic and vulgar.

A rollercoaster is not animation. The recent Disney remakes are not animation. A pair of Winnie the Pooh earrings on a primary school teacher is not animation.

I grew up on Disney. Despite wonderful holidays all over the place, we never got to Disney in America. We are going when my eldest finishes his GCSE’s in 2 years time as a huge treat and I honestly can’t wait. I have always wanted to walk down Main Street wearing mouse ears and a baggy jumper with Pluto on it and I bloody well will. This has been my wish since childhood and I'll be seeing it out at 46. Can’t come soon enough. My DH has never been to Disney and he’s a huge fan as are our kids.

I’m excited for you!!!

You will have an amazing time.

I'm not a "disney adult", I'm not THAT into it but I am a 38 year old man and you better believe I'm jiggling my ass down the road with Poor Unfortunate Souls blasting in my earphones.

I don't think there's anything we should grow out of if we don't want to. Maturity should be about personal growth, not your cultural tastes. If grown-ass men can construct their entire identity around a bunch of guys kicking a ball, I can base mine on whatever I like.

Fair comment.

I also agree with @Devonshiregal who commented that being into things enriches life and generates proper social involvement. I used to pity a friend whose family were really into music as she had to get up at 5:40 to practise before school. As a teen I thought it a bit tragic and uncool. But she has grown up to have such a rich and interesting life from it, and has been asked to join so many creative projects. I always meet charismatic and lovely people when I visit her and she is always happy, fulfilled and never lonely. As I have got wiser, I realise interest communities can be a really positive thing. I can’t pretend Disney would sustain me, but actually neither would football or hockey which plenty are into and no one calls them undeveloped or childish yet they really don’t involve much more than play. But that’s just personal preference and I would never knock or deride someone for finding their thing and throwing themselves into it. Have to add I’m not sure what rock I’ve lived under, but I really have never met one of these Disney obsessives. Most people I know are fun enough to think it’s a magical place to take their Dc and might buy a couple of souvenirs. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And the movies are pretty decent for children and I’d expect most children to have watched a lot of them as modern classics - just as I’d expect they probably read a lot of literary classics for children. But I’ve never seen anyone Disney-obsessed.

i would agree because a lot of people into adult animation are into animation full stop. They appreciate the art and technical side.

But yes you’re right lots of adult animation is very cynical and vulgar. Bug nature the opposite of Disney.

so I’m talking about those that appreciate animation, not just the content.

how come you think the recent Disney remakes aren’t animation? Mary poppy a returns used hand drawn animatio . The lion king was character animation. Jungle book. It’s not people in animal costumes.

although earlier examples 101 Dalmatian’s live action or lady and the tramp 2014 I think it was - I’m not sure how much was animatronics etc

but the rollercoasters and the earrings etc - it’s all about being part of something, part of a community. Disney is a community founded in one man’s art. Like a football fan wearing a football jersey. Or Rick and morty fans getting Rick and morty tattoos. It’s all something people can associate with and feel less alone in this world with

Mummadeze · 07/09/2024 16:05

I like lots of childish things, like Hello Kitty, My Little Pony and Disney. Also anything cute or pink. I love Barbie as well. Conversely, I don’t really like dark, gothic things like Adams Family, Beatlejuice, emo style etc. I have always been like this and it’s just part of who I am. I like plenty of adult things too. It doesn’t seem weird to me.

Lilacrose27 · 07/09/2024 19:37

Disney is for everyone in my opinion.

I love Disney and I have been to several of the Disney parks around the world multiple times. It’s my happy place and I feel comfortable and able to be myself. I was brought up around Disney and never got the chance to go as a child. I am also on the autistic spectrum and it’s one of my things but even if I wasn’t I’d still choose to go to Disney parks and watch Disney movies etc.

I have my own child now and I can’t wait to take them to Disney over the years as they grow up if they like it great if they don’t they don’t. I will still be going and I’ll still like it regardless.

At the end of the day if something makes someone happy and it doesn’t affect anyone else then let them get on with it.There are adults who play games and thing's or adults who like to visit theme parks or even things like Pokemon and no one questions that so what makes Disney any different?

Elceee · 07/09/2024 22:47

It’s an ick

AcrossthePond55 · 08/09/2024 18:53

For those of you who think Disney is shit and think that those who love it are stunted, immature, lack common sense, or whatever pejorative you choose to use, that's fine with me. Keep thinking that and never 'do Disney'. You do you and sneer. We'll do us and laugh.

Because that leaves 'more Disney' for those of us who 'get the magic'.

My DT’s loved the magic of Disney and we’ve done Florida, California, Paris and Tokyo - all very different. Never understand people criticising it when they’ve never been. Would I go again now DT’s are grown up - probably not but in years to come I’d love to see it through the eyes of any grandchildren.

I think that’s how I feel too: it’s fun to relive it through the eyes of children because I remember how I loved it and it’s nice to see your own Dc having that experience.

Personally, I probably would not go for myself as an adult, but maybe that would be different if I didn’t have children as an excuse and I’d get curious to go again. Also we take our Dc on lots of quite adult trips ( our Dc have trailed through a lot of art galleries in particular) so it’s a fun way to return the favour for our Dc.

I love Disney movies but hate the corporate greed that is Disney. I absolutely refuse to go to a Disney land and queue for long periods. People just accept this and seem to forget the long queues only exist because they allow too many people in to make more money. Then i heard that they charge for parking in the US Disney parks. This actually disgusted me, I resolved then to never give them any money. I don't have Disney plus and won't buy branded stuff. I do however put my principles to the side once in a while as I genuinely love some of the movies.

Nearly. I said nearly cry. Lump in my throat, watery eyes. Staring straight ahead at the screen so hopefully nobody notices.

As far as DD is concerned, Dad is unbothered. Dad doesn't cry. Except when Buffys Mum dies. Or Toothless kills Hiccups Dad in How To Train Your Dragon. Because anyone who fails to cry at those is dead inside.

And as another poster asked you. Why? Why does it matter if DD see's me cry? It's good to see that adults have emotions too, that sometimes men get scared and upset too. It helps them understand that its OK for them to do.

I struggle to cry at real life. When my Mum died I didn't cry for months and months. The emotion was too big to process and it wanted to come out as anger instead, which I had to push down constantly for months. Crying would have been healthier. And when it happened, it was. Throughout those months I could hear my Dad in my head "Big Boys don't cry."

Fuck that. Crying at a disney movie doesn't make me less masculine, doesn't make me less of a man. You trying to shame me for it makes you slightly less human though.

I think you sound fabulous.

I'm not a "Disney Adult," but "Do you Want to Build a Snowman," from Frozen makes me ugly cry every time. My father died when I was 21, and my mother died when I was 23, and my brother was the only other person I had in the world. The part where she sings, "We only have each other/It's just you and me/What are we gonna do?" takes me right back there every time.

I can't get past Walt Disney's role in the McCarthy witch hunts and the behaviour of the Disney corporation, they hire small businesses to do work for them then refuse to pay knowing that it will bankrupt them but give them more of a monopoly. Makes all the fluffy talking bunnies look less cute.

What kind of work does Disney want more of a monopoly in?

Animation and Computer games for a start.

meatyryvita · 10/09/2024 17:42

It's not my jam but as long as they don't try to take me along on the journey, I don't care. Life is really bloody hard and so if a bit of escapism brings them joy, so be it. Obviously, I will look at the lady in my company who recently posted a picture of her and her family at Disney with them all wearing matching Disney clothing (hers was a dress) a wee bit differently (joke..ish).

Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

Animation and Computer games for a start.

I wondered if it was that.

I hadn’t heard this. It’s quite interesting.
