Disney adults

In the last year I've met three separate couples that are so into Disney.

I know we all like different things, but isn't Disney for children?

I bloody love Disney and can hand on heart say that Disney world is my happy place haha! And there's nothing wrong with my emotional development as far as I'm aware. Love sharing that with my DC.

I also have plenty of other interests I should add! I don't particularly love Harry Potter or camping holidays or art but I can't say I'm not making friends with someone because of their enjoyment or appreciation of it ... I think that would say more about someone's emotional maturity than any particular passion or hobby.

OP how would you define a ‘Disney adult’

Not my quote but made me laugh: 'Disney adult is a childless, self-infantilised and overly excitable millennial'

I must admit I found it frustrating when DC had to queue behind countless middle-aged women to meet the characters at Disney.

This reminds me so much of all the mums in the Taylor Swift facebook groups arguing that Taylor and the Eras Tour are for children and parents should've been able to buy tickets before all of the 35-40 year olds bought them all and ruined their kids' lives.

Disney is for anyone who wants to go there. Otherwise the character meet and greets would be advertised as for kids only.

I'm not a Disney adult but I am one of those annoying women that's found childlike joy in things others would consider childish now, because my childhood was awful and I didn't get to experience it when I was little. I'm not inclined to apologise for that.

Richard1985 · 05/09/2024 12:47

Disney is one of the biggest entertainment brands in the world so I'd be surprised if most adults weren't "into it" to some extent

I don't love the animations particularly (beyond a pleasant nostalgic feeling when the kids watch Jungle Book or Aladdin) but they have plenty of adult TV shows on their platform and the theme parks look to have some great rides to rival the best theme parks in the world

Nagatha · 05/09/2024 12:47

I don't get it personally. I might enjoy some Disney films, but the thought of wearing clothes emblazoned with Disney characters as a woman in her 40's is a bit... cringe. Although I also hate the fact kids clothes seem to be covered in it too so maybe I'm just miserable.

PfishFood · 05/09/2024 12:55

I had a fall a couple of years ago and in my drug induced sofa lounging period that followed after, I caught up on a load of Disney films I'd never seen. It was ace. Kids films are perfect for chilling out too.

(Encanto was my favourite!)

MonsteraMama · 05/09/2024 12:59

I'd rather be a childless, self infantilised, overly excitable millennial than a boring bitch with a massive stick up my arse who uses the anonymity of the internet to be snide about other people under the ruse of false bafflement at their differences 🙃

Not saying that's you of course OP, just a wild and completely unrelated example of a more dislikeable person than a Disney adult.

BeachParty · 05/09/2024 13:27

There's a magic cut off age where you suddenly have to stop liking your favourite things and start liking more "grown up approved" things.
(Only in the heads of po faced fun police, that is)

I don't make anyone feel bad for liking Disney. I do think it's weird, but I keep my opinion to myself (and on an anonymous forum).

Nothing weird about anyone enjoying themselves - there’s no age limit on it.

poppymango · 05/09/2024 13:34

stardii · 05/09/2024 11:30

Because they talk about it so much!

There's nothing wrong with adults liking all things Disney, but I agree it can be tedious when a person makes something their entire personality. Star Wars and Marvel are serial offenders in that regard.

Football bores fall into that category too.

You could say the same about people who love gaming every spare minute.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 05/09/2024 13:42

I did find it weird when grown adults were pushing in front of my small children whenever we tried to watch a parade or something at Disney....

Saying that, I wasn't in to Disney as a kid and am loving that I can now watch all the films with my little ones.

CoffeeLover90 · 05/09/2024 13:44

I love it because my favourite memories as a child was watching Disney films. My childhood wasn't the best.
As a child I always wanted to go to disneyland, it was my dream. But it didn't happen.
As a young childless adult I thought I would look strange visiting, so I didn't.
Then I took my 5 year old boy. I saw his eyes light up with wonder as we went round every corner, the excitement of the parades, the light display and the squeals of delight on the rides. I love Disney even more now.
There's humour in the movies that went over our heads as children.
I saw groups of adults there, showing as much delight as my son.
It was magical.
Growing old is unavoidable but never growing up is possible.

TaylorSwish · 05/09/2024 13:45

Do what makes you happy. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think Disney is ‘just for children’ at all. Each to their own. I don’t ‘get’ Disney adults but I’m sure they don’t ‘get’ my love of, eg, football or gothic horror.

However, I find it irritating when anyone makes an interest into their entire personality, whether that’s Disney or Star Wars or Taylor Swift or Doctor Who or cats or golf or knitting or anything else. As a general rule, assuming a fandom/hobby as your entire identity and boring other people with it is usually annoying for others.

I can't be doing at all with people droning on about things and feel much the same way as this ^

Well what things do you like?

Investinmyself · 05/09/2024 13:47

Lots of Disneyworld is marketed for adults. It’s not kids wearing drinking around the world t shirts at Epcot or enjoying food and wine festival. Lots go without children. Disney cruise line has adult only areas, very few small children in some cruises eg Alaska.

JazbayGrapes · 05/09/2024 14:10

I get what you mean, but have you been to shops like Primark? Adult sections are full of cartoon themed clothing for both women and men.

Pigeonqueen · 05/09/2024 14:13

I think it’s a bit weird but it’s very harmless and if people enjoy it so what, there are far worse things for people to get excited about!

We took dd to Disneyland when she was 6 and I’m really not into any of it at all but I’ll admit I got very caught up in the “magic” of it all, probably enjoying seeing dd very excited too, and it did feel like a special little happy bubble. I can see why everyone loves the parks so much.

Sartre · 05/09/2024 14:15

I wouldn’t say Disney is just for children. As in lots of kids films, there are themes and jokes intentionally there for adults to understand or enjoy. I don’t have an affinity towards Disney personally or other franchises such as Harry Potter, Star Wars etc but don’t judge those who do. Whatever brings you joy really.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 05/09/2024 14:16

That's my point.

Most of these 'Disney adults' where children when first watching the films. Were people supposed to stop liking Disney when they became adults?

JazbayGrapes · 05/09/2024 14:21

Precisely. I think the idea is that with age you should develop more grown up interests. However, marketing says otherwise.

Getmeahobnobstat · 05/09/2024 14:26

I listen to people talk about their interests, their pets; their kids; their extension; their ailments; gossip about their neighbours; their holiday to Crete etc etc.

And if they are happy to talk to me, I’m happy to listen and I’m genuinely interested, even though I may not find these topics any more stimulating than an interest in Disney.

Disney is but one topic that can bore the pants of others. I’m sure there are many more that perhaps people have been too polite to make even you aware of?

My best trips to Disney have all been without kids 😌
