To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

As someone who is involved more than a lot of mumsnet, yes, it is :)

Involved in helping men access women's spaces? 👏

Another one throwing insults around yet expecting debate.

😂😂😂 no love.

A women who will be sharing these spaces. It’s really not an issue.

Sit down for this next bit, I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.

Unisex toilets are also not an issue.

What is a trans identifying man? Does it mean trans man?

For YOU, love.

Why is it so difficult to get your around the fact that many women want and need single sex spaces? Just because you don't see the issue, you're happy for them to be unable to participate fully in public life? Why on earth would you take that stance?

Otherwise known as a trans woman or a man who identifies as a woman.

Where are the trans men getting changed? Are they in with the women too?

I think people are being allowed to go in the room according to whatever gender they identify with at the time

Why is it so hard for people to understand that not everyone wants to boycott somewhere though? It’s funny how people will argue the toss on one side, without even considering the other side.

I understand for the minority, there could be an issue. However, for the majority there should be no issue other than prejudice.

As someone who has trans friends, it’s DISGUSTING how they are treated by people who they wouldn’t even notice.

Threads like these, calling for the public to boycott a shop on an issue that will not impact the public, are awful.

For those who have genuine reasons, and aren’t just transphobic, then these should be raised. Not just because of a bias.

Are you the only woman on MN to use unisex toilets? Confused

But that's completely different - people still have the opportunity to choose single sex toilets.

Not really. In some buildings you’d have a long walk.

Why is it the women’s spaces that have to be gender neutral? Make the men’s spaces the gender neutral ones, then the problem is solved. Trans men then get the option to use either

No, it means a man who identifies as (a) trans(woman).

You don’t have an argument when you use discriminatory and derogatory terms I’m afraid.

TransformerZ · 29/08/2024 20:53

I've had a £65 voucher for a year that I can't be bothered to spend with them - I will try in September.
Don't see the appeal of JL, expensive, pompous crappy items.

The post was about unisex toilets being fine, not the boycott.

Interesting that you think women who don't want to share with men are the minority. I very much doubt that. Trans people are the minority - they can lobby for their own spaces or use the loos which align with their sex. Not require that women give up their private spaces.

BotterMon · 29/08/2024 20:55

In my company we have offices which only have one loo (WTF is a 'toilette' in Cheadle?) so we share with men. Not a big deal. We don't go to the loo at the same time.

If someone can't take off/put on a coat/leave an umbrella in a shared space then they have bigger issues.

ReadingWorm · 29/08/2024 20:55

I’m not convinced it’s a big enough issue for me to boycot JL. I like their kitchen department and the fashion is better than it used to be. Their beauty hall is alway handy when looking for Xmas gifts.

I couldn’t live without my weekly Waitrose delivery either.

SerafinasGoose · 29/08/2024 20:58

Primark listened. They now have women's and separate mixed gender changing areas.

These big corporate entities only listen when someone kicks off, makes a huge fuss, and it goes viral. Unfortunately before this can happen a traumatic or at the very least unpleasant incident is required, in which it's invariably a woman who suffers. And I'm sick of women being sacrificed on the altar of inclusion for everyone else but us.

Elphamouche · 29/08/2024 20:53

It’s a technically accurate term. We should go back to those.

Edited

You misunderstand what I’m saying. The minority are those with GENUINE reasons who don’t want to share with those who are trans. Those with PTSD, Trauma, DV in their past. I am one of these by the way, so please don’t think I don’t know what it’s like. HOWEVER, my point still stands. This doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t bother everyone, and those of us who aren’t concerned about it are still allowed to speak up.

I didn’t say an overall majority. I’m not an idiot, it’s just the majority of these views are preconceived judgements from people jumping on the bandwagon.

That's interesting, I didn't know Primark had changed its policy.
