To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

Any male, who thinks his right to use women’s facilities, despite it clearly making at least some women uncomfortable, is more important than women’s rights to have spaces away from males, is the EXACT type of male who should not be anywhere near women or our spaces.

Entitled, deluded misogynists.

Lovelyview · 31/08/2024 14:06

The Equality Act guidelines I linked to previously suggest third spaces such a gender neutral toilets. I really don't understand why companies like John Lewis alienate their customers and their staff when a perfectly rational solution has been suggested to them. Presumably it's because to be a 'Trans ally' you have to actively chuck women's feelings in the bin. Then accuse women of transphobia for objecting.

Because male feelings always trump women’s safety. Even women have a hardwired revulsion and aversion at prioritising women if it will upset some men.

I think it’s a basic survival instinct.

Here’s an example for you:

If a trans woman, we’ll call her Ms A for these purposes, has previously been found to have harassed the other users of a female only organisation, that organisation might be entitled to assert that it is legitimate and proportionate to exclude Ms A from membership.

In that example, the legitimate and proportionate response is to exclude Ms A. It would not be to exclude all trans women from joining the organisation or accessing its space.

Here’s another example, I’m a woman who does not consent to sharing my female-only spaces with men. Any men. Men is dresses. Nice men. Men who bake cakes. Men you know. None of them.
Women are vulnerable to men and we do not need to explain WHY we refuse to hand over our spaces to them.

Ah. Perhaps @DadJoke could come back to you on this one, as he thinks all trans women can be excluded from some organisations on some mysterious grounds that is definitely not because they’re men (though I’m not sure what criteria he’s going to apply here).

Under the Equality Act you don't have to do it on a case by case basis although you do have to show it's proportionate. There's talk of a lesbian only dating app which would use AI to filter out men including trans identifying men who say they're lesbians. As the definition of a lesbian is a same sex attracted woman this app would be allowed to exclude all men from it's service under the Equality Act.

The default is a case-by-case basis, but there are examples where all trans women can be excluded eg Beira’s Place.

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 31/08/2024 14:25

I think what it boils down to is, why can’t men just fucking FUCK OFF occasionally and leave women alone? Why do they have to be there going “Oh actually I have a tenuous right to be here that I’m going to assert against everyone’s wishes” like Alan Fucking Partridge?

I say this as a woman happily married to a good man, surrounded by, for the most part, really decent, intelligent men. But online, my god, they’re out in force.

Loggialy · 31/08/2024 14:25

DadJoke · 31/08/2024 13:30

@BernardBlacksBreakfastWine your example is absolute drivel. There is no protected category of adult children and you have moved the goalposts from loos to sports. Gender reassignment is a protected category, and trans women can and do use women’s loos because it is their right. You want to change that right.

Of course I am a man as my username makes very clear. I have no interest in being in single sex spaces.

It may well exclude all men. But we’re talking about whether it could exclude women (be it those assigned female at birth, or those who EA10 recognises as gender reassigned ie trans women).

Hate to break it to you, but the fact that you’ve heard a rumour that a website might use this kind of AI doesn’t mean it would be legal if they did.

Errr no one has inferred that @BernardBlacksBreakfastWine is a man. (I personally have no clue as to their gender. I doubt @DadJoke does either.)

I think you’ve misread the discussion.

Trans women are men.

There’s this great episode of the Good Wife, with a judge who insists all the attorneys start with ‘in my opinion’ before making their submissions.

I think this would be helpful here, as it just gets circular and boring when people post statements such as yours @Elbone without a basic level of recognition that what you are expressing is your opinion….

Dare I ask it…? What the hell. @ElleWoods15 how are you going to ascertain who is a woman and who isn’t if trans women are a type of woman? I asked @DadJoke what his criteria were but he’s yet to get back to me (at time of writing),

Do you believe there are any facts in the world? Or is everything just opinion?

I wonder how it would go if I prefaced all my answers in, say, a maths exam with ‘in my opinion’ and then accused the exam board of bigotry when they marked them all wrong? 🤔

It’s not my opinion.

It’s a fact. What is the only thing that unites trans women as being trans women? Literally, the ONLY thing they have in common, is that they are men.

Only men can be trans women.

Why can’t gender critical people just toddle off occasionally and leave trans women alone? Why does their dislike of trans women mean they can impose their views on everyone else? Why are they co-opting women in general rather than accepting that most feminists, women’s organisations and RCCs support trans women?

i mean just take a day off from constant attacks and enjoy yourself. Stop making transphobia your raison d’etre. It’s just mind rot.

I just don’t get how you extrapolate that I don’t believe in any facts because I disagree with you on one point @BernardBlacksBreakfastWine.

We are allowed to disagree on this. It’s ok. There’s really no need to resort to being rude and hyperbolic every time someone doesn’t agree with you.

You want women to “toddle off” from our own spaces and leave them to the men?

Why are you so afraid of women having the right to say “no” to men?
