To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

I’ve been boycotting them for ages, they can fuck right off. I spent several grand there last years but not this year.

GailBlancheViola · 29/08/2024 21:56

You are behind the curve @ElleWoods15 every survey done of the general public shows that the majority of the public, (and the numbers rise higher every time the survey is done) do not believe that people can change sex or that transwomen are women and nor does the general public support males, any males and that includes TW, in women's spaces and sports.

I’ll wait with interest to watch them join you on your boycott then @GailBlancheViola .

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 29/08/2024 21:59

I would boycott them, but as they closed my nearest store (after an extensive, expensive revamp) I don't go any more anyway. I used to absolutely love JL - it was the absolute gold standard of retail and a truly lovely shopping experience. I spent a fortune there over the years. Department stores were made popular by middle class women in the 19th century, as it gave them places they could go where they didn't need to be chaperoned and could safely spend hours, meeting friends for tea or lunch, independent of menfolk and out of the domestic realm. What a shame that a place that has a quiet, but important, part in women's history is now rendering itself unfriendly and unsafe for women because some bloke thinks he's a lady, despite having a penis.

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 29/08/2024 22:00

I mean I hear your prayer and think it's important to make a point but is boycotting them effective? More effective than a petition or bad PR or a letter etc? Genuinely interested...

That was a lovely poetic post. It makes me feel all nostalgic for the heyday of the department store.

Boycotting here too. We had our kitchen installed by them back in 2020 and they were a nightmare to deal with. Also used to get a monthly Waitrose shop. No more. They have not had any money from me for over a year and I have no intention of returning until they understand that they must provide single sex spaces for women.

TheLocust · 29/08/2024 22:03

@Name5 Third spaces just won't do for many transwomen. It's about validation and pushing women's boundaries for a lot of them, so separate toilets etc won't satisfy them.

FranticFrankie · 29/08/2024 22:04

Transwomen are transwomen; if they were women, there would be no need to transition.
Can anyone tell me what we have in common with transwomen? Being a woman is biology not feelings!!! How can it be denied that TW are not men? And please don’t throw the GRC at us
I do wonder how TRAs and MRAs think.
It is not bigotry to stand up for women’s rights- too many people (men and women!) are happy to throw women under the bus
and I’m fed up of it
Perhaps be wary of certain posters and their agenda …..

I am actually hoping this thread counts as bad pr 😁 I don't know what's an effective strategy I have written to them as well. John Lewis are a huge operation and obviously a few people boycotting them won't really make a difference to the bottom line. It sounds like they're in trouble for other reasons as well. I just don't understand why they're throwing away the good will of their staff and some of their customers when a simple solution is to have third spaces.

Since JL are already struggling, closing shops and not paying the bonuses to their staff I would hazard a guess that the public are already deserting them in droves.

Does anyone on here have some credible up to date statistics which show how many cases there have been of men who identify as women who have used female spaces and then harassed, abused or assaulted someone else who was using that space? My understanding from reading this date from the ONS is that 48,000 (0.10%) identified as a trans man. 48,000 (0.10%) identified as a trans woman. 30,000 (0.06%) identified as non-binary. 18,000 (0.04 .. So this seems that a tiny minority falls into this category. I have been seriously sexually assaulted twice in my life and both attacks were perpetrated by men and happened to me in the street and it is in the street that I feel vulnerable, not in a public toilet.

SaWhat · 29/08/2024 22:12

I was at a work lunch recently in a bar/pub. The loos were mixed and ended up in a cubicle next to a male colleague and we could hear each other weeing. Just yuk.

Not the point of the thread I know. Didn’t feel threatened and no we’re not all 12 and know the sound of bodily functions but I don’t want to be dealing with that.

Name5 · 29/08/2024 22:13

@TheLocust i agree. A proportion of transpeople cause hatred. That's not asking for fairness it's being a prick.
My family member was bullied after the scales fell from their eyes. They questioned a lot of the ideology as they grew up. I'm not a blanket supporter and I've been called a terf and worse. I like fairness and grew up when gay people were hounded as they were all 'aids riddled perverts'.
The law is clear. GRC doesn't give automatic rights. Most transpeople I know are appalled by the violence and aggression and don't want it in their name.

We create the world we live in through the choices we make.

Thank you for the information. I won’t be returning to John Lewis unless this changes.

It very interesting which cohort of trans people the trans allies and trans rights extremists and MRAs are shilling for, it is not your family member and it is not for my TW friends in fact they refer to them by an awful epithet.

Most transpeople I know are appalled by the violence and aggression and don't want it in their name.

The ones I know are too and their lives are being made much harder because of it, but still the extremist and their allies do it claiming they speak for all transpeople - they don't and they don't care, so much for kindness and tolerance.

One problem is that most police forces record crime by people's preferred gender so an assault in a women's toilet can be recorded as being by a woman but it's actually by a man who identifies as a woman. A report to parliament which I linked to upthread says violent and sexual offences by men who identify as women are at the same level as other men.

48000 is quite a few people

Going back to the Latin for a bit, in what way are what we’ve seen above not ad hominem attacks?!

If you try to criticise others use of Latin phraseology, you probably need to know what it means first.

This is a dispute between employees/union and JL. Not my fight.🤷‍♀️

Ignoring the war in Gaza too whilst you are at it? Russia invading Ukraine?

As long as you're alright Jack. Not your fights are they so 🤷‍♀️

We have progress. @GailBlancheViola at least accepts that once someone has a GRC, they have legally changed sex.

A piece of paper does not change someone's sex "Elle"

Could say the same with basic biology. You should get to grips with that.
